Historia
Ten-year-old Nem has just witnessed her mother's brutal murder and her life appears destined for tragedy. Until, that is, she finds her mother‘s old green journal which holds an incredible secret. This innocent looking book seems to contain the power over luck. As she uses it, Nem discovers the diary keeps a strange kind of karmic balance, that in gifting someone good fortune she must steal another's first. All it takes is a simple entry. There's dangers though, and not just for others but also for Nem.

very confusing at first
Revisado: 04-28-25
I didn't like the switch between characters. I found myself annoyed because I want to know what was going on with the little girl. the Author in the book was annoying and self centered. I didn't realize till over half way through the book that the story of the Author was present day and the story of the little girl was following her from past to where she clashed with the Author. I normally don't mind books that jump from character to character and they all come together at some point. I'm usually able to follow easily. not so much in this book. I did listen to the end. The idea of the story line was good. I just didn't like the presentation.

had potential
Revisado: 06-16-24
I think this could be a great story line. the problem i have with it is the writing itself. the author uses the word "sense" a lot. as in "sense this was going on, that happened" or "sense we were already talking about it, I answered" (generic examples, not quotes from the book). it would be one thing if it was just a particular characters tone, but every character used it. there are a lot of other examples that are tell tail markers of a slightly inexperienced writer. a good editor should have picked up on these things and corrected them. I liked that each character has it's own voice, however the one of the queens witch is particular annoying. also the narrator doesn't do a good job of always remembering to revert back to a normal voice after someone is talking. the "he said" or "she said" being read In whoever voice was talking. sometimes she does and sometimes she doesn't. it's sporadic.

Historia
New York Times best-selling author Iris Johansen delivers a brand new thriller. Every day brings a new challenge for the forensic sculptor Eve Duncan: identify a new victim and help bring a criminal to justice. But Eve, who uses her intuition and modeling clay the same way a sketch artist uses a pencil, is about to meet her greatest challenge yet: a killer who is going to extraordinary lengths to obscure the identity of his victims, leaving them literally faceless and with burned fingerprints.

another story dabbling in mind manipulation
Revisado: 03-31-22
the story was good but im loning for the paranormal stuff that I had grown to love... missing stories like Odd Thomas. I'm getting bored with this story line. Even the two volumes of short stories are about a guy who's mind is wiped clean.
That being said, the story was good though the ending seemed a long time coming then abrupt. there's the typical twists you didn't quite expect but somewhat predictable in other areas. I'm becoming disappointed in this narrative of mind controlling people as a reoccurring them.

It's a fear more paralyzing than falling. More terrifying than absolute darkness. More horrifying than anything you can imagine. It's the one fear you cannot escape, no matter where you run...no matter where you hide. It's the fear of yourself. It's real. It can happen to you. And facing it can be deadly.

good story
Revisado: 03-29-22
this was a good book with the exception that in 2 instances a portion was pit in where it didn't belong leaving you wonder how the characters got to that place only for the entirety of it to be played in the next chapter or so leaving you with a strange sense of deja vu. I'm assuming it's an editing issue.
also, having listened to the Jane Hawk series prior to listening to this book, I was surprised to find the connection (I won't spoil it for you) between this book and Jane's long ordeal.
overall, I recommend this book. then go read/listen to the Jane Hawk series 😁

not into rape and incest.
Revisado: 01-29-22
I love Dean Koontz but while the story line was good, I'm not into rape and incest books. the seemingly unnecessary original rapist didn't need to be added, or it could have been some other sort of convict, likewise, the death of the partner was unnecessary. I'm also not used to koontz having somewhat detailed love scenes in his books. love interests, yes, but not actual sex scenes. also, I'm used to koontz neatly explaining any loose ends, however, we don't know the fate of one character at the end.

There are millions of stories in the city - some magical, some tragic, others terror-filled or triumphant. Jonah Kirk’s story is all of those things as he draws listeners into his life in the city as a young boy, introducing his indomitable grandfather, also a "piano man"; his single mother, a struggling singer; and the heroes, villains, and everyday saints and sinners who make up the fabric of the metropolis in which they live - and who will change the course of Jonah’s life forever. Welcome to The City, a place of evergreen dreams where enchantment and malice entwine.

slow starter but worth it
Revisado: 01-22-22
I wasn't sure exactly what to expect after listening to the first couple chapters. I was sort of wondering if I was actually going to like the book or not but as a koontz fan, I kept going. it wasn't too long before I was engrossed in the story of this little boy and curiosity kept me going longer. the details of the characters made them come to life in my mind along with the wonder of a little boy. most of koontz books have a lot of supernatural occurrences but this one while somewhat centered around it, only really touched on it a few times in the story. you know it's there but not a prominent in your face part of the story line. it kinda lurks in the back of your head making you wonder if and when it was going to peek out again until the ending. overall, I enjoyed the book. the narrator gave the characters life, and fully was able to personify the essence of the boy, making you feel like he was actually telling you the story of HIS life.

slow starter
Revisado: 01-20-22
it was a good book once you got into it a bit. the story line was slow but still good. I kept trying to think of what hideous features could possibly be on a person that would make someone want to kill them. the idea was just unfathomable! I was picturing some grotesque figure out of Frankenstein (a really good series also by koontz). the ending gave you a major twist that threw me for a loop and wondering what I would see if I looked at one of these people.
