Historia
In this landmark work, acclaimed historian Joshua Freeman has created an epic portrait of a nation both galvanized by change and driven by conflict. Beginning in 1945, the economic juggernaut awakened by World War II transformed a country once defined by its regional character into a uniform and cohesive power and set the stage for the United States’ rise to global dominance. Meanwhile, Freeman locates the profound tragedy that has shaped the path of American civic life.

Partisan Drivel
Revisado: 08-15-12
Would you try another book from Joshua Freeman and/or Don Hagen?
This book was not very informative and the production quality was low. For a reader with a basic knowledge of U.S. History in the 20th Century, you will not learn much from this book. The narrator is not very compelling (the sound quality is low) and there are several apx. 10 second breaks in the recording. So, no and no.
What was most disappointing about Joshua Freeman’s story?
This book is like a high school history textbook with cliche liberal talking points mixed in. Buy this book if you want to hear 100x how "manichean" Republicans are, and hear a whole chapter on how "paternalistic" Walmart is. I learned very little from listening.
Any additional comments?
I have listened to many history books from Audible. Recent favorites are 1493 by Charles Mann and Civilization from Niall Ferguson. Those books taught me things I never knew. THIS BOOK does not. If you took high school US History, and occasionally watch the news, you will not learn anything from this book. You'll just hear things you already know as described by a committed partisan with the same old stale talking points you've heard a 100 times.

Historia
Known for his network of conservative websites that draws millions of readers everyday, Andrew Breitbart has one main goal: to make sure the "liberally biased" major news outlets in this country cover all aspects of a story fairly. Breitbart is convinced that too many national stories are slanted by the news media in an unfair way. In Righteous Indignation, Breitbart talks about the key issues that Americans face, how he has aligned himself with the Tea Party, and how one needs to deal with the liberal news world head on.

Historia
More than 200 million years ago, geological forces split apart the continents. Isolated from each other, the two halves of the world developed radically different suites of plants and animals. When Christopher Columbus set foot in the Americas, he ended that separation at a stroke. Driven by the economic goal of establishing trade with China, he accidentally set off an ecological convulsion as European vessels carried thousands of species to new homes across the oceans.

The top history book of the decade
Revisado: 12-28-11
Where does 1493 rank among all the audiobooks you???ve listened to so far?
This is the best book I've read all year. I've recomended it to friends and family and re-listened several times. We live in exciting times, and the fields of history and anthropology are constantly being challenged and changed as new discoveries are made. IMHO, Guns Germs and Steel set the gold standard for world history books. However, for the reasons I just mentioned, its important to keep up with emerging discoveries and new knowledge. I loved Mann's last book, 1491, for this reason. This book dramatically exceeds the previous work, no mean feat. For anyone interested in history, this is a MUST READ. Couldn't recomend more.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The chapters about colonial U.S. history were real eye-openers.

Historia
P. J. O’Rourke is one of his generation’s most celebrated political humorists, hailed as “the funniest writer in America” by both Time and The Wall Street Journal. Twenty-three years ago he published the classic travelogue Holidays in Hell, in which he trotted the globe as a “trouble tourist,” a chaos rubberneck, sight-seeing at wars, rebellions, riots, political crises, and other monuments of human folly. After the Iraq War - “too old to keep being scared stiff and too stiff to keep sleeping on the ground” - he retired from what foreign correspondents call “being a s**thole specialist.”

If you could sum up Holidays in Heck in three words, what would they be?
Sharp, Enlightening, Engaging
What did you like best about this story?
While O'Rourke never fails to amuse, there's a lot to learn in this book. I really like the chapter about China. The chapter on cancer treatments is a good read as well.

Bill Maher, you're a tired old man
Revisado: 12-28-11
Would you try another book from Bill Maher and/or Bill Maher?
I watch the show, so yes. Having watched the last few years of the show, there's not a lot new here. IMHO, I enjoy the show, but when you hear the new rules back to back, you start to pick up on the them pretty quickly. Maher is a relentlessly negative, cranky old man. This book is supposed to be comedy, but it's really just a marathon b*tch and moan about everything under the sun. The

Historia
The rise to global predominance of Western civilization is the single most important historical phenomenon of the past five hundred years. All over the world, an astonishing proportion of people now work for Western-style companies, study at Western-style universities, vote for Western-style governments, take Western medicines, wear Western clothes, and even work Western hours. Yet six hundred years ago the petty kingdoms of Western Europe seemed unlikely to achieve much more than perpetual internecine warfare. It was Ming China or Ottoman Turkey that had the look of world civilizations.

Worth Reading
Revisado: 12-28-11
Where does Civilization rank among all the audiobooks you???ve listened to so far?
I like this book much better than Ferguson's last book the Ascent of Money, it is much more readable and engaging. Well researched and full of history I'd never heard. Definately worth the read.
What did you like best about this story?
I thought this book would be more of the same as previous books in this genre such as Guns Germs and Steel and 1493. The theme is the same, but this book brings a lot of new information to the table.
