Compelling, thoughtful and extremely well done, but…
Revisado: 11-15-24
This is the best and most convincing UFO book I’ve ever read. I am convinced Luis is a patriot and means well. That said, there is a big blindspot that is not discussed seriously enough.
Nietzsche wrote about how science would cause western civilization to collapse, convinced that science proved the Judeo-Christian worldview is false.
While ironically I don’t believe this, people are essentially religious. Luis focuses rightly on the science and the Constitutional presupposition of self governance.
What would likely happen if disclosure occurred would be
- people would assume it is a deep fake operation and a government conspiracy to control people
- people would say it is demons (he touches on this in his book) and that it meddling in these affairs is to invite trouble.
- to Nietzsche’s point, people could loose faith in the philosophical presuppositions that underly Constitutional self governance. (This already happened to a degree after Trinity site).
I continue to follow with deep interest, but I don’t see how this can end well.

Historia
Life throws us “curve balls”—from devastating personal losses to world tragedies. These events often leave us doubting God, the Bible, and our faith. But instead of pushing away our reservations, we should embrace them, Peter Enns argues. A leading biblical scholar and Christian mentor, Enns has never been afraid to question the Bible or Christian beliefs. Such thoughtful inquisitiveness, he argues, is part of God’s plan. He wants us to question, because doing so actually leads to a stronger, lasting faith.

Best Christian Memoir I’ve ever read
Revisado: 08-20-24
This may be because of how deeply I resonated with his journey of questioning, faith, doubt and wonder.
It is deeply profound, conversational, at times humorous as well as accessible. It is a personal journey that takes you through some of the biggest paradigm shifting ramifications of the modern world and our assumptions about God and the Christian faith.

Pete Enns’ depth of faith and command of subject matter
Revisado: 07-11-24
First what I disliked. Lose a star for him not doing the narration. It wasn’t bad but Enns is a gifted and dynamic speaker.
It’s probably unfair to lose a star for story, but I’m half way through “Curveball”, his more recent book. For a baseball comparative analogy, his latest book is a grand slam. “Sin of Certainty” is a two run homer. Both great, but one roughly twice as great.
What surprised me the most in “Sin of Certainty” was the depth of Pete Enns’ Christian faith and the foundational pieces he lays out in the book. He breathes new life into the Bible as a trustworthy resource for exploration of the endless nuances of what it means to be a human. If we live long enough, most everyone these days ends up questioning some aspects of what they believe in relation to God, faith, doubt, life, meaning, you name it.
I expected someone more jaded, maybe with a few axes to grind. Someone as skeptical or more skeptical than me.
Instead I found this book perhaps ironically encouraging, causing me to question my own skepticism surrounding my own Christian faith and the Bible.
I came away from the book, encouraged, but also reflective. As if I had just had the rare pleasure of having an intimate conversation with someone of deep faith and allowed to glean from their wisdom and life experience.
This is top shelf for Christian writing for sure.

For the first time in thirty years, more than a dozen former ATF agents who participated in the initial February 28, 1993, raid speak on the record about the poor decisions of their commanders that led to this deadly confrontation. Revelations in this book include why the FBI chose to end the siege with the use of CS gas; how both ATF and FBI officials tried and failed to cover up their agencies’ mistakes; where David Koresh plagiarized his infamous prophecies; and direct links between the Branch Davidian tragedy and the modern militia movement in America.

Another excellent book by Guinn
Revisado: 02-19-23
I just finished the book and enjoyed it.
It’s the second book of his I have read, the first one being the Massacre in Jonestown, which was as good as this one, if not better.
Guinn has established himself as a thorough and trustworthy true crime writer that approaches his subject matter evenhandedly, without an axe to grind.
He sets out to tell what happened and to let the reader form their own conclusions and take away from his research and findings what they will.
If your goal is to hear a diatribe that reinforces a particular view, Guinn’s writings are not for you. If however your goal is to hear a balanced account of events in order to understand the nuances that lead up to what happened, Guinn’s books are a solid choice.
P.S. Narration was excellent as well.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Dr. Tara: a modern day Bob Dylan
Revisado: 09-13-18
This story deeply resonated with me as I am sure it will with others. As you journey with her through the story you feel the loss, the joy, the anger, the grief, but most of all, the courage and liberation of an individual who by the end of the story you feel you know and love.
A beautiful masterpiece and gift to all those who struggle with finding freedom to be true to one’s self.
Thank you Tara.

Jordan Peterson is a trailblazer
Revisado: 05-22-18
Jordan Peterson is doing something that to my knowledge, no one else has successfully done in recent history which is to combine ancient wisdom with modern empirical findings in the domain of psychology. This is a very real need in modern society that he has tapped into and is attempting to address in this book. I think he does a great job and that it will only get better as he continues to refine the material. I look forward to his future work.

While he comes across a bit overly critical at times, this is an engaging and compelling retelling of his experiences in public life.
In terms of audio quality, there are a couple of sections you can tell where he seemed worn out starting a new chapter but other than that it is an interesting and engaging story.

Character and humility
Revisado: 08-22-16
This book was required reading for my first MPA class and I can see why. The principles of good leadership espoused in this book seem like something from a past era. Gates, now in his 70's sets the bar appropriately high for what a good leader should be and do in this book. His call for humility and admission that everyone has flaws, helps season this book some grace that mainly about keeping high standards, acting professionally and respectfully.
There were times I felt I was being lectured by a moral authority figure in the book, but ai believe this is because the man himself is just so daunting as a professional. It's nothing like reading a folksy, feel good political memoir. Gates is all business in this book.
That's not to say there aren't humorous passages, but that he seems primarily interested in conveying his principles and values to the reader in order to pass on what he has learned and foster a continuing call to principle and integrity.
Overall, this is not the most enjoyable read, but contains great thoughts about leadership from a man who had a distinguished career in public service.
