Loved this book, especially the focus on overcoming the mental hurdles of fasting. I've done juice fasts (5 days) and water fasts (1 day) in the past, but they were always difficult, anxiety-provoking, and decreased my ability to work and socialize.

The authors' message really broke through a mental barrier for me: Don't make fasting a big deal, just do it, and if you feel bad, stop the fast.

Wow. I'd always thought the secret was being super committed and roughing it. But when I took a lighthearted approach and just stayed curious instead of committed, I easily fasted 36 hours. I could have gone longer and will next time. On a related note, in "The Keto Reset" (which I just reviewed) the authors suggest carrying around a bottle of water with simple carbs during fasted workouts just to give you a sense of ease. You're not supposed to drink it of course. It's just a precaution and drives home the same message: You can stop whenever you want, and it's not supposed to be painful.

Woah, I loved this audiobook. It's probably the best "delivery" of a health book I've ever listened to. The narration is fantastic and funny, the book is laid out well, and I found myself completely convinced by every point that was made. I've read a half dozen other books on keto, so a lot of the information wasn't new, but some of it was.

I was particularly impressed by the 21-day metabolism reset that the authors recommend BEFORE starting keto. I didn't succeed at keto until my 3rd attempt, and the reason is that the 3rd time I eased in gradually, first cutting carbs most of the way, waiting 3 weeks, then reducing carbs some more as well as protein. If I'd listened to this book earlier, my first attempt would have been successful.

At the end of Part II, there's a really helpful quiz to assess whether you're fat adapted enough to start keto ratios. I typed out the quiz and printed it out because I think it's a really useful guide to return to every month or so. It asks about hunger, energy, mood, sleep, ability to skip meals, and of course consumption of sugar and starch.

The research on keto & athletics was fascinating and has motivated me to exercise in a fasted state.

Any additional comments?

I've had really good luck with audiobooks the past year. I've been all about AB's since 2002, so my standards are high. I listen to a few each month. Anyway, this was one of the best of the past 12 months. As many people say, she knows what she's talking about. She never sounds like she's reading off a list of Law of Attraction truths. I'm so sick of hearing LOA authors say the same. old. stuff. But Sonia learned the principles before LOA was a huge commercial market, and she learned them as a child. Her perspective is astute and her words are precise.

The principles are ordered in a specific way. This isn't just a compilation of "top tips". She knows what builds on top of what. And it comes with a pdf, but I've only gone through half of that so far.

As soon as I finished, I went back to re-listen, because I think I'm stuck at one of the earliest principles. But her stories kind of got in the way. They were awesome to listen to the first time around, but I don't want to hear those parts again right now, I want to key in on the parts where she describes and summarizes and instructs.

So, if there was one thing to make this better, it would be shorter chapters to give more flexibility. Not a reason to remove a star.

Any additional comments?

Delightful to listen to, elevated my mood, but one month later, I can't say it made a lasting impression. Maybe it reinforced my conviction to focus on the positive and to lighten up. I'm glad I purchased it.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This was great. Her recent books and talks organized around tangible theme (money, weight) have been phenomenal, and this is among them. I loved the first half of this. Actually, I loved the first 2/3. I got bored after about an hour of hearing from the audience. The audience's questions seemed to drag the discussion down to a lower level. But it was helpful to hear from some of them to see how the principles apply to a range of people. I love that Marianne continues to grow and evolve and to become an increasingly fantastic female role model. She could choose to ride on her earlier successes and not change a thing, but she does change, which is the hallmark of an exceptional teacher and spiritual practitioner.

What did you love best about Claim Your Power?

I agree with most of what he says, such as the importance of taking daily action and how important it is to have a success relapse plan (I tell this to my clients all the time but they don't want to face the reality that backsliding will occur). Most of the book contained things I'd heard from other sources, so I tuned a lot of it out. I did have one "ah ha" experience that helped me identify a reason I'm stuck in an area of my life.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I've listened to about 15 WD audiobooks, and this isn't all that new, and it isn't my favorite, but his attitude is somehow different in this particular recording. He was apparently spending a lot of time with A Course in Miracles during this era of his life, and he has a humility that a lot of his other books lack. It also means it isn't quite as funny as some of his others, and maybe not as inspirational in terms of making we want to jump up and go do things, but it's serene and I enjoyed it.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I absolutely adore this author's perspectives on behavioral change. I have a PhD in social psychology with an emphasis in behavioral health, and his mini habits approach is exactly the way to make conscious changes. Almost every habit I've mastered, from cleaning my house to drinking water to meditating to writing a dissertation, was achieved because I was able to commit to tiny, daily behaviors. His book is very well written, documented, and narrated.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The drawback of the book is his insistence that weight loss can result from increasing servings of whole foods. He convincingly explains that if you're going to eat a big burger or doughnut, it's better to first eat a fruit, vegetable, or egg. I agree that it's much, much better to focus on what TO DO to lose weight rather than what NOT to do. If we focus on NOT eating, we obsess, and we're not building new, constructive habits. However, he is too dismissive of calories. Young, active men or highly athletic women can fill themselves up on whole foods, be satisfied, and accrue a caloric deficit. Older, smaller, and more female people can easily gain weight eating moderate portions of fruits, nuts and avocados. An active, 30-year-old male who is 6 feet tall can lose a pound a week eating THREE THOUSAND calories a day. An inactive 50 year old woman who is 5-foot-2 would need to cut her calories to TWELVE HUNDRED calories a day to lose a pound per week. Huge difference. If she eats 1 avocado, that's 25% of her daily caloric allotment.

Any additional comments?

Through my research and work, I've noticed that the biggest problem for most women is nervous snacking throughout the day. Men are more likely to eat unhealthy foods in unhealthy quantities. Women are more likely to nibble nervously on snacks every hour or two, usually fruits, dried fruits, boba drinks, sweet coffee drinks, and nutrition bars. Some of those foods are technically whole foods, but they result in weight gain for people with slower metabolisms and smaller bodies. To his credit, he never says listeners are required to follow a whole foods diet to apply his other principles. He recommends other behavioral additions, such as drinking water with meals, chewing more thoroughly at meals, and increasing activity. I'd love to hear more tips from him on how people can build habits of not eating between meals. For instance, aiming for certain times of the day when food is off limits and slowly building up mini-fasts throughout the day.

What do you think your next listen will be?

More Brian Tracy, Rory Vaden, or Greg McKeown

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The author's passion came through. I admired his audio recording abilities - I record audio for a living, and I know how hard it is to make them engaging. He infuses a lot of life into his voice.

Any additional comments?

He was basically spewing his philosophy without going into depth. I was trying to take notes at first. I got as far as: "lose your friends and get new friends, who are masterminds" - which seemed a little harsh, but I was open to the idea - but then he didn't have advice on how to follow up. He moved onto another topic that was even less defined than that piece of advice. In essence, the purpose of this audiobook (from what I can tell) is to fire people up. It didn't fire me up. But if you like listening to people with intense, borderline-shouting voices who have optimistic messages, it might replace your cup of coffee for that day.

Any additional comments?

I was hoping to get instructions on how to creatively synthesize the various archangels when enlisting their help. Many of them have overlapping functions (protection and health, life purpose and intellect, beauty and nature), and it seems like there would be multiple angels ready to help in various situations but that each one might have a special edge or perspective (more than just a domain of influence). She covered a bit of this - for instance, noting that some angels are more assertive and others prefer that we take the lead... some have a good sense of humor, others are serious... But in all, the audio was a looooong list of archangels (way more than I wanted to hear about) along with their domain, their color/appearance, and some pivotal stories pertaining to each. I was a bit disappointed, but it did hold my attention for the entire 5 hours, so I give it 3/4 stars.
