Brilliant Plot w/ Unexpected Turns
Revisado: 02-18-25
This story starts with an angry protagonist, grasping for a reason, any reason, that his affair with his lover ended abruptly. The story unfolds with his efforts to search out and, hopefully, reconnect with his married lover. The tale is fabulously well-written, and like life, is full of unexpected surprises, moments of anguish, and an odd lot of characters all drawn together by happenstance and perhaps even a divine hand.
Colin Firth as the narrator is the perfect choice for this role.

Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

The Whistler could have been SO MUCH BETTER!
Revisado: 07-03-24
The overall idea and characters of the story really were original, and the novel could have been really good. Instead, this was a Grisham sleepwalking through 42 chapters. The characters were barely fleshed out. The female narrator used vocal fry for every male character, which was terribly annoying. 6 chapters describing the detail and aftermath of a head-on car collision was sickening, and not germane to the overall story. The story wrapped up too easily. It could have really been a good one, but the author seemed too tired to make it all work. Disappointing.

If you like John Steinbeck . . .
Revisado: 12-27-23
. . . You’ll love this novel !
This is a terrific story of a farming family told from the POV of young Luke (who should have been 13, not 7). Not at all like his legal thrillers, this tome reads, in subject matter, storyline, cadence, and finish, much like Steinbeck’s “Grapes of Wrath”. This study, set in 1952 Arkansas, centered on a poor farming family, and itinerant cotton pickers, it is a wonderful read, so different from Grisham’s usual crime thriller fare, and so much like Steinbeck, that I was surprised - and very pleased to have a great read to look forward o every evening. I highly recommend this book to lovers of Southern fiction written in the Steinbeck style. You won’t be disappointed!

A great narration of a self-indulgent (very Ron Swanson) story about a lucky S.O.B. (Nick Offerman) whose marriage and careers, as both an actor and woodworker, has this All-American Boy sitting on top of the world with his lovely bride, Megan. An witty, insightful, and entertaining listen! 5 stars, Ron! …er, Nick!

Gary Sinise is a terrific narrator!
I thoroughly enjoyed his reading of “Of Mice & Men”. Could someone at Audible please have him read “Tortilla Flats”? I’ll be listening to Gary read “Travels With Charley” next. A good narrator makes the book into so much more!
