Historia
Homicide detective Frank Bennett has a new partner - dark, beautiful, coldly efficient Eden Archer. Frank doesn’t know what to make of her, or her brother Eric, who’s also on the police force. Their methods are... unusual. But when a graveyard full of large steel toolboxes filled with body parts is found at the bottom of Sydney harbor, unusual is the least of their worries. For Eden and Eric, the case holds chilling links to a scarred childhood - and the murderer who raised them. For Frank, each clue brings him closer to something he’s not sure he wants to face.

Hard to put down
Revisado: 05-30-21
I'm coming back to review this title after listening to all three (so far) audio books in this series. It was worth reviewing immediately after listening to it last year but I didn't take the time, though I gave it 5 starts then. It's a bit dark and gritty and maybe not for everyone. But for that, I can't imagine why anyone would not give it a good rating. Candice Fox is a terrific author and Stephen Shanahan is a great narrator. Much of what I decide to listen to on Audible is based on one or the other, a great author or great narrator. Seldom do I get the chance to enjoy an audio book featuring both. So, treat yourself. This is what an audio book is supposed to feel like.

Historia
Most homicide detective teams run on trust, loyalty, and the shared desire to put killers behind bars. Frank Bennett's partner, Eden Archer, thrives on darkness and danger. She has a rare talent for catching killers - but her idea of justice has little to do with courtrooms. Now three girls are missing, and Eden is going undercover to a remote farm where the troubled hide and blood falls more often than rain. Frank’s job is to keep an eye on his partner while she's there - but is it for Eden's protection, or to protect others from her?

Great follw-up to book one
Revisado: 05-30-21
Great follow-up to Hades. I love Candice Fox's writing. She knows how to build suspense and how to vent just enough off the top to keep you from feeling fatigued by it. Stephen Shanahan, as usual, delivers another flawless performance. Such a treat when these two team up for an adventure.

As good as it gets
Revisado: 05-30-21
I love Candice Fox and her Archer and Bennett series. The series is deep, dark and gritty. And I suppose just reading the book would be great on its own. Her ability to paint pictures with words is enough to carry you into her world and take you on a ride you'll not soon forget. So what could make it better? Recruiting Stephen Shanahan to narrate it. That could, and does make this series a whole lot better. Painting pictures with words is great, but Shanahan brings those pictures to life. His performance and her writing make this series a must to get. I hope there's more to come from these two.

AS GOOD AS IT GETS
Revisado: 04-02-20
Good Me Bad Me: 5 stars all around.
I love listening to Imogen Church narrate. She can take an okay story and make it good, take a good story and make it great and take a great story and make it phenomenal. And that's exactly what she did here. Ali Land wrote a brilliant novel, which, I confess, may have gone underappreciated had I merely read the words myself. The cleverness in tone and pace of this slow-burn drama might have escaped me otherwise. Sure, I would have recognized the absolute talent in Ali's Land's writing, her unique style and detail for excellence undeniable, yet when brought to life by the stellar performance of a world-class narrator like Ms. Church, something magical happens and from the first paragraph to the last, the book proves itself an audio masterpiece. I look forward to reading (hearing) more of Ali Land's work in the future and especially so if Imogen Church narrates it. What a great partnership. What a great book.

Brilliant first page to last.
Revisado: 12-16-19
This is arguably Author Jane Harper’s and narrator Stephen Shanahan’s best collaboration thus far. Brilliant writing with characters that live and breathe and outstanding narration keeps you from ever wanting to put the book down.
I’m not usually a big fan of stories that mix the past and present literally chapter-to-chapter but truth is this now-and-then alternating perspective is what makes this book so intriguing. The author does a marvelous job seamlessly weaving recent past and present in such a way you almost don’t even know she’s doing it. And Stephen Shanahan, doubtless among the best of his peers, as usual takes absolute possession of the story, making it his own and delivering a truly masterful performance in the process.
Well done. Worth the credit and then some.

Historia
No one knows exactly when it began or where it originated. A terrifying new plague is spreading like wildfire across the country, striking cities one by one: Boston, Detroit, Seattle. The doctors call it Draco Incendia Trychophyton. To everyone else it's Dragonscale, a highly contagious, deadly spore that marks its hosts with beautiful black and gold marks across their bodies - before causing them to burst into flames. Millions are infected; blazes erupt everywhere. There is no antidote. No one is safe.

Disappointing
Revisado: 03-05-19
Writing was better than average, which I expected, though I told myself I wouldn't try and compare Joe Hill to his father. The story, however, was average by any measure, and possibly a case of potential unrealized. Characters were fleshed out and believable. The narrator was capable enough, and the plot, though pedestrian at best given the tools of the supernatural at hand, provided sufficient direction for an eventual resolve. In the end, sadly, there was just too little scaffolding there to support what could have been an epic story, which is why it left me feeling disappointed. You see this with big named authors who pump out books to fulfill contractual agreements at the expense of reader satisfaction. I expected more from Mr. Hill, and yes, maybe because of the footsteps he walks in.

Still shivering
Revisado: 03-05-19
It's great when a book can make you feel as though you are there. Knowing that real 19th Century arctic explorers suffered similarly in the unimaginable cold added to the realism. The author did a splendid job of communication what life must have been like onboard a British naval vessel in the mid-1800`s, describing conditions and situations with incredible vividness to the point I almost felt I was there. Still, I gave the book 4 stars only because I thought it was a bit longer than necessary, a case of beating a dead horse that had already taken an excruciatingly brutal beating. I felt for those men, their pain, horror, fears and terror, but after having sufficiently established the plot, the backstory, the mystery, conflicts, relationships, struggles and strife (get the picture) there comes a time when it's time to move on. More is not better. I may like salt, but too much only makes things salty. All said, however, this is one of the best books I have come across in a long while. A really good book performed really, really well. Bundle up and enjoy this one.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Slow, boring, minutia fueled details
Revisado: 03-05-19
I so wanted to like this book before watching the movie. 4.8 star rating suggested I would. That said, there comes a time when you're so far into a book and it still isn't interesting then you know it will never redeem itself. I hate not finishing a book almost as much as I hate wasting my time on a bad one. I gave it a good six hours or more before finally surrendering. The performance was okay, maybe even a little better than okay, and on the outside the story line seemed interesting enough, so I guess it's the writing. Dialogue, what little there was in the first six hours thank god, proved weak and unconvincing, so no love lost there. The real problem I had was with the author's over-use of technical detail. He did know a lot about biology, chemistry, physics and the mechanics of space exploration, I'll give him that, and was obviously proud to show it. Sadly, that overbearing heap of triviality only served to drag the pace of the story to a near-grinding halt. perhaps the movie will be better. After all, I do like Matt Damon.
