Historia
February 1862. The Civil War is less than one year old. The fighting has begun in earnest, and the nation has begun to realize it is in for a long, bloody struggle. Meanwhile, President Lincoln’s beloved eleven-year-old son, Willie, lies upstairs in the White House, gravely ill. In a matter of days, despite predictions of a recovery, Willie dies and is laid to rest in a Georgetown cemetery. “My poor boy, he was too good for this earth,” the president says at the time. “God has called him home.”

Historia
In an abandoned mansion at the heart of Barcelona, a young man, David Martin, makes his living by writing sensationalist novels under a pseudonym. The survivor of a troubled childhood, he has taken refuge in the world of books and spends his nights spinning baroque tales about the city's underworld. But perhaps his dark imaginings are not as strange as they seem, for in a locked room deep within the house lie photographs and letters hinting at the mysterious death of the previous owner.

Engaging tale of the supernatural
Revisado: 02-26-17
What did you love best about The Angel's Game?
Zafon spins an intriguing tale of an aspiring writer. The setting of old Barcelona is very interesting. The question of did he sell his soul to the Devil or is he inhabited by a spirit still mystifies me. I find Mr. Zafon's books to be interesting and very much page turners.
Who was your favorite character and why?
David Martin is the main character. He is brilliant and possessed at the same time.
Which scene was your favorite?
I always love the entering of old, grand homes. When Daniel enters his residence for the first time, I enjoy exploring and discovering along with him.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Neither. I am still perplexed as to whether (spoiler alert) David Martin was alive or dead through most of the book. I believe this is an allegory for how one should live their life.
Any additional comments?
Fascinating and compelling.

Unsubstantiated claims
Revisado: 02-26-17
What disappointed you about Teach Like a Champion?
This is a book of classroom techniques as reported by a charter school administrator. While the techniques may have merit they are unsubstantiated by research. This was the only text selected for an online class that I took. I feel more academic books should be used for college credit courses.
What do you think your next listen will be?
A novel.
Would you be willing to try another one of Grover Gardner’s performances?
Grover Gardner is gruff and authoritarian when he reads a text. Listening to him was exhausting. I sped the reading rate up to 1.25 so that the laborious text would unfold more quickly.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
I felt distressed that mediocre classroom techniques could be inflated to a book of this length. The sentence structure used a lot of words to say very little. This book does not follow the form of conventional, academic writing.
Any additional comments?
Seek a text that has been substantiated with research citations rather than one person's recollections.

Historia
The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works. Told in language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal, a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss.

Exceptional tale! Alive and spitited.
Revisado: 07-27-16
This is a sit down and read-through book that is as alive as Earnest Hemingway's pen or typrwriter the days he wrote this story. A must read in the canon of American literature.
