Historia
Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli. By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Elsa must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.

Loved it.
Revisado: 02-19-21
This book will stay with me for a long time. Of course I knew about the depression and the dust storms and the contributing factors but I was pretty much unaware of what the people went through when they fled the desolation to find a better life in the west. It was an eye opening story and the writer very much held my attention. The narrator did a wonderful job.

Okay story.
Revisado: 09-06-20
I bought this after reading the first book in the series "The Guestbook". The story was just okay. I tired a little of hearing about all the food they ate. But my biggest complaint about this book was the narrator. To me a narrator can make or break a book and this one almost did just that for me. She had very little emotion in her voice and reminded me of a professor teaching a class.

Loved this book.
Revisado: 10-04-19
I don't even know where to begin. I loved this book - it made me sad, it broke my heart, it made me happy. I love historical novels, especially those that take place during WWII. There are so many conflicting emotions in this book and Sarah Jio seems to capture all of them perfectly.

Great book!
Revisado: 08-20-19
I have read all of Dorothea Benton Frank's books - some of them twice. I decided I would listen to Sullivan's Island on audible as it had been many years since I had read it. It is true what others say - the narrator can make or break an audible book. Joyce Bean did a fabulous job - I loved her voice. I highly recommend this book!

Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

Exceptional!
Revisado: 06-29-19
I just finished this book. Usually, I only let myself listen to my books when I am walking or exercising. This was an exception! The story stayed with me and I listened to it in my car, while doing housework or just relaxing. What an amazing story for a first-time author and the narrator was amazing! Don't pass this one by!

Great book!
Revisado: 12-01-18
This was a great book and being from Iowa and only an hour away from where the story starts made it more interesting. The author was very spot on in her description of the areas in Iowa. This was a very good book and I can't help but think there is a sequel as the ending left things up in the air. I highly recommend this book and eagerly await the following book or books!
