It's a decent holdover, but
Revisado: 06-07-24
The writing and reading were phenomenal! It was a good story. But I didn't see much of the point into how this contributes to the overall story. It's a fun side read, but didn't feel like I/we gained much

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Historia
On January 25, 1917, HMS Laurentic struck two German mines off the coast of Ireland and sank. The ship was carrying 44 tons of gold bullion to the still-neutral United States via Canada in order to finance the war effort for Britain and its allies. Britain desperately needed that sunken treasure, but any salvage had to be secret, since the British government dared not alert the Germans to the presence of the gold. Lieutenant Commander Guybon Damant was the most qualified officer to head the risky mission.

it's a pretty good story! there'd a fair bit of fluff and comical details mixed in there that cracked me up. but all in all, I felt an hour podcast episode would have been just great for this story.

kind of aimless

Honestly was pretty aimless and overarchingly negative. Not really an adventure book either, and beckons for help

Great Historical Read
Revisado: 09-11-22
the author did a great job weaving so many different storylines together. The only reason I gave this 4 stars is because I wish the final chapter or epilogue touched on the current state of Alaskan conservation. I understand the time frame was through 1960, but some kind of conclusion or current state would have tied things up nicely. Look at Collapse by Jared Diamond for example. But, nonetheless, great book and sparks the desire to travel!

One source reports that yields could be multiple times higher than that developed ashore utilizing 1/10th of the water. pretty basic
Revisado: 05-21-21
I was fairly disappointed, I feel that if you have invested any time into looking into climate change, you would already have this information. it's more like a beginners guide 101. I guess I was hoping for more specifics, but maybe that will come in 10 years when more tech has been developed. I was hoping to get into the dirty of what is developed and what is being. I also think he shy'd away from controversy and played it incredibly safe. Barely touching on nuclear, not talking about overconsumption or overpopulation. Nothing really to call on the general population.

Fantastic but a little tough
Revisado: 04-11-21
such an amazing book, fascinating content thru and thru. However the narration was painfully dry and that guys voice made it really hard to stay awake and focused. However, once I got into a rhythm of it, it was became easy to listen for long periods. While it was an environmental and economic impact book, I found it at the heart to be a psychology book. Lots of of interesting information that tied into other books/podcasts I've listened to. Highly recommend on audible or in print. I have both and used both
