Powerful Intent, Over the Top Execution

Percival Everett’s James reimagines The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn through the eyes of Jim—now fully realized as James, an intelligent, resourceful man whose voice was largely absent in Twain’s original novel. Everett’s intention seems clear: to challenge how Black history has been told through white perspectives, particularly in classic American literature. However, while the book has important ideas at its core, its execution left me frustrated rather than enlightened.

What Works:

Reclaiming Jim’s Narrative – Giving James a full inner life, intelligence, and autonomy is a necessary correction to Twain’s portrayal, and Everett does succeed in showing James as more than just a runaway slave.

Challenging Literary Conventions – Everett makes it clear that Huckleberry Finn was a white man’s version of Black existence, and James attempts to subvert that by centering a Black perspective.

Themes of Code-Switching & Survival – The way James constantly downplays his intelligence to survive was one of the most effective and thought-provoking aspects of the book. This theme of “translating” oneself to fit into a hostile society is still relevant today.

What Doesn’t Work:

Excessive Brutality That Feels Over-the-Top – While James aims to expose the true horrors of slavery, it often feels more like shock value than meaningful critique. The graphic violence—especially Hopkins’ rape of Katie—felt overwhelming, not because slavery wasn’t that horrific, but because we already know this history. Instead of deepening the novel’s impact, it distracted from its message.

Plot Twists That Strain Believability – The riverboat explosion, James miraculously surviving in the boiler room, and the revelation that Huck is James’s son—all of these felt unnecessary and exaggerated. These moments pulled me out of the story rather than drawing me deeper into James’s experience.

Losing Its Own Message – If the book is about challenging misrepresentation, why does so much of it focus on James’s suffering rather than his full humanity? The novel spends more time reinforcing pain than exploring who James is, beyond what happens to him. Instead of feeling like a fresh perspective, it became just another story about Black suffering—which is exactly what it was trying to critique.

Final Thoughts:

I went into this book expecting a powerful reclamation of Jim’s story, but instead, James felt bloated with excessive violence and unnecessary dramatic twists that overshadowed its core themes. While it succeeds in highlighting how Black narratives have been misrepresented by white storytellers, it also falls into the same trap of centering Black pain above all else.

Would I recommend it? It depends. If you’re looking for a thought-provoking, critical response to Huckleberry Finn and don’t mind heavy violence, James may resonate with you. But if you’re hoping for a nuanced, character-driven retelling that expands James’s humanity rather than emphasizing his suffering, you might walk away disappointed—as I did.

Karen Kallmaker delivers another beautifully written novel in Substitute for Love, brought to life by the angelic voice of Angela Dawe. The combination of these two talents is simply extraordinary. Kallmaker’s storytelling is rich with depth, featuring outstanding character and relationship development that truly captivates. I particularly loved that the main character is a math geek—something unique and refreshing—and how the book weaves powerful metaphors related to mathematics throughout the narrative. It’s thoughtful, intelligent, and deeply moving.

However, I must confess that my audiobook purchases are driven more by narrators than by authors these days. Angela Dawe is one of my top three narrators, and her voice, pacing, and emotional nuance make every story unforgettable. As long as Angela is narrating, I’ll be hitting that “buy” button without hesitation. If you’re a fan of Kallmaker’s writing or Angela Dawe’s narration—or both—this audiobook is an absolute must-listen!

I listened to this book because of the narrator, Abby Craden… I would probably listen to the telephone book if read by Abby Craden.

Also bought a couple hundred dollars worth of supplements and it looks like I’ll be doing the ATP “diet“ for the next month or so.

As for the contents of the book, it actually made a lot of sense and I’m looking forward to getting started.

I love listening to Moreci’s YouTube videos, so I’m n not at all surprised that this book was so fun. She does telegraph the twist, if you could even call it that, very early on, but it was still a very entertaining listen with some witty dialogue.

When i search for books to listen to, i search for Abby Craden… she reads a lot of books by Gerri Hill. I do enjoy her stories, but they always seem to end so abruptly. I don’t know if that’s a bad thing.
