Historia
Imagine yourself in Cape Cod in early fall with the steady swells of the waves falling against the sand and the gentle rhythmic chirp of crickets in the dunes. Unlike canned nature sounds created in a studio, renowned acoustic ecologist Gordon Hempton gives you the real deal. He travels the world recording remarkable locations that capture the essence of the place itself.

Extremely relaxing sounds

I love the extremely relaxing sounds of soft ocean waves and slight winds playing repeatedly. This is good for focusing or for background noise.

A Beautifully Told Story!
Revisado: 01-26-20
I loved this fictional tale about Agatha Christie and the gorgeous descriptions of the landscapes!
The story was so well written that I kept forgetting that this was a fiction book and not a recount of actual events after what happened when her husband cheated on her and she disappeared then came back with amnesia (that whole real life story is totally interesting #icymi). I kept getting lost in the descriptions of the landscapes and foods that were described. I found myself wondering why certain groups of people had to mess up the countries and cities described in the book because I wanted to experience these places, their cultures, their foods, their market places, and find out more about the religions described from the people who practice those religions. I was drawn in to the lives of the 3 women who started as individuals who were thrown together at the beginning of their long trip, and who ended up becoming travelling companions and extremely close friends.
I listened to this book with Audible, as well as using my Kindle to read on days that I did not have a migraine. I would recommend either way. Justine Eyre's narration was done well. I like her voice and the changes for different characters.

Revisado: 01-21-20
This story is about middle schoolers? I would believe it more if they were older.
Emily Poe and Alice Wray, along with some other middle schoolers, are summoned by an anonymous benefactor to take a test for a chance to get a scholarship to an elite private school. They pass and are given rooms to stay in close to the school and a living stipend. There is a strict guardian there to watch over them, but I felt like she wasn't as strict as she was made out to be in the beginning because she didn't show up as often as I would expect a person caring for two 7th graders. Once starting school, they interact with a student named Nathan who is very technically advanced and has invented multiple things to earn his money. He is concerned about Emily and Alice becoming friends with a very rich popular group of kids, whom have been dubbed The Nobility. He warns them that something is amiss about this group. Alice is the first to get begin spending time with them...and that is when the story becomes a mystery with multiple possibilities for what the actual crime might be, who could commit it, and how the listener is supposed believe that this is all carried out by middle school kids when it sounds like high school or college age children. I would've liked the book better had it been older kids and some of the clues not so neat. Also, the villain monologues were fine for recapping and helping to figure out what really happened throughout the story, but they were pretty clichè.

Grinch of Love?
Revisado: 01-13-20
I'm not sure if I feel like the MC's heart grew two sizes by the end of this novella, or if she may still be a terrible snob who was just overcome by the holiday (and alcohol) spirit. It sounds like she acted the same way with her life before the loss as she did afterward, with the only difference being her treatment of the additional people. It's hard to believe that she would change everything based on a couple of hours when she showed up already "drunk adjacent" and upset about everything. This just isn't very believable to me.

Historia
Most children go through a dinosaur phase. Learning all the tongue-twisting names, picking favourites based on ferocity, armour, or sheer size. For many kids this love of ‘terrible lizards’ fizzles out at some point between starting and leaving primary school. All those fancy names slowly forgotten, no longer any need for a favourite. For all those child dino fanatics who didn’t grow up to become paleontologists, dinosaurs seem like something out of mythology. They are dragons, pictures in books, abstract, other, extinct.

I'm glad I listened!
Revisado: 01-08-20
This was was a great listen with the author as the perfect narrator.
I think if this had been a physical book in front of me, I probably wouldn't have gotten as much out of it as I did while listening to the author and his interviews with other scientists. I have a dinosaur obsessed son with many dino encyclopedias and various other books. I could picture much of what Mr Garrod was talking about. His love for the subject and the other experts' input in the own voices made this more interesting to me.
I would recommend this book to those who used to love dinosaurs as a child, those who have kids who love dinosaurs (Buddy Read anyone?), and of course to those who still love and devour anything about dinosaurs.

Pride Month is every month!
Revisado: 12-19-19
Most every story was an enjoyable one! Love that these were told by actual people.
I downloaded this Audible Original during Pride Month 2019, but I left it on my list to tackle longer stories first. Tonight, I needed something comforting during a horrific migraine that has taken over my day and night. I knew that listening to others describe their experiences with realizing they were LGTBQIA+, coming out to others, and some of the many experiences they have had relating to their sexuality or the way they present would feel as if I were hearing from a dear friend who was encouraging me to always be true to myself and stand up for others as well. just knowing the inner turmoil is devastating enough, but to be able to share those experiences and how someone else feels/has felt about the way they have been treated and what their actions were is very comforting. I wish our political climate and parents were not so hateful toward people who are not heterosexual or who do not present as such. I see now more than ever after reading this book that other countries have been even more lenient for years and their inhabitants don't bat an eyelash at someone so different than a hetero. I also see that there are people in some countries who have had hatred for others instilled in them so much so that they imprison those not seen as "normal". That disgusts me.
This is a well thought out program with bits of comedy routines dispersed throughout to make out the bulk of the tales. I felt like I was at a comedy club on GLAAD night instead of the comedians sitting down to tell the stories to tell those of us who subscribe to Amazon's Audible Audible with two Originals available free each month. While I enjoyed it immensely, there was one I just couldn't get into his part and I fidgeted throughout so that I could focus on anything except what he was saying.
I would definitely recommend this title to others! There are stories that touch the heart, comedies, suspense, and little mysteries to solve. Each personality is great too! I would love to spend the day with any of them...and maybe have a few nights of sleepovers too!!

DNF at 15.5 mins, may not come back
Revisado: 12-19-19
Barely into the book and the author uses the "R" word ("...social r--...") to have the MC describe her socially awkward ways. I want to stop, especially considering the narrator is very dry and using little inflection or change in voice for different characters. I need a break. I love Elle as a person and I know this book is from a few years ago, but it's not so old that the R word was used in that time as much other than an insult. The medical community had already moved on to using another diagnosis instead of MR because of the way the R word had been taken over and used disparagingly.
I may or may not come back to this at this point here so I don't have to hear the word again. I won't be reading my Kindle version along with it next time.

Librarians spend their lives weeding - not weeds, but books - books that have reached the end of their shelf life both literally and figuratively. They remove books that patrons no longer check out, and they put back books they treasure. Annie Spence, who has a decade of experience as a Midwestern librarian, does this not only at her Michigan library but also at home, for her neighbors, at cocktail parties - everywhere. In Dear Fahrenheit 451, she addresses those books directly.

Siri Reads a Book About Books
Revisado: 08-30-19
I loved the playfulness of the actual book and the reviews given for most all of them. The list titles and categories were funny. I had to speed up the speech for the narrator, though. I have done some narration for books on tape for children in the past, so I know that speaking slowly and enunciating is important so that listeners may hear more clearly. I found it difficult to listen at regular speed, though. The narrator sounded too much like a robot...more specifically Siri. It's hard to enjoy a book read without any real emotion in the voice. I do really like the book and would love to own a paper copy, though.
