Great continuation of the story
Revisado: 11-25-23
It is all coming together, albeit slowly, the ending was satisifying, but if you like cliff hangers maybe not. Anthony Ryan's prose is wonderful and vivid, the narrator's performance exceptional.
Cons: Everdeen's character development is non-exsistent, if anything she's become even more 1-D. The other female characters- widow, drangess(spelling), and the hunter are rewarding and thoughtful even the introduction of the King's sister.
The big battle at the end, I hardly cared becuase I hardly knew the King, or the Duke, or the pretend King-- but even so, found the conclusion to this book delicious mainly becuase we got to see the growth of lord and scribe.

There were good parts, but it struggled in others.
Revisado: 11-10-22
Very good book overall, but had pacing issues. Author used writing tropes, such as, "I won't bore you with the details," of an event he had spent 2 chapters building up to, just so that you could get the gravity that the certain characters are tyrants or crazy, or both. Our anti-hero also pines for, while aknowledging that the main female lead is using him, but their relationship doesn't go any further sexually or chemistry or friendship wise. But even with the holes, I enjoyed this book and am waiting to see how it ends.

Historia
Romy and her three partners in crime - a sword master, a silversmith, and her thieving brother - have embraced their roles as the Shadow Lord's agents, using their forbidden magic to accomplish tasks his other spies cannot. Now, the Shadow Lord needs them to infiltrate the home of the Mercediaran Ambassador and prevent him from obtaining information that would lead to all-out war with Cantagna's most dangerous enemy. To succeed, they will have to resurrect long-buried secrets, partner with old enemies, and once again rely on the very magics that could get them sentenced to death.

Agree with others, not as good as the first
Revisado: 07-29-22
The performance of the reader was amazing, but the story left ALOT on the table and was mostly filler. Which is hard to say becuase there were elements there, new characters--- the idea of a countdown before the prisoner exchange, and the climax was satisfying. The issue is, we hardly got development or backstory to the characters we have come to know and love from the first book. The new characters were barely developed so while interesting, I dont know if there is "enough" there for me to care. However, I liked that the author did not go into graphic detail re: torture, etc.. but liked that the focus was on the gravity of injuries and healing from them.
