Historia
Valentine Weis is a salvager in the future wastelands of Utah. Wrestling with body dysphoria, he dreams of earning enough money to afford citizenship in Salt Lake City—a utopia where the testosterone and surgery he needs to transition are free, the food is plentiful, and folks are much less likely to be shot full of arrows by salt pirates. But earning that kind of money is a pipe dream until he meets the exceptionally handsome Osric.

Historia
As one of the few witches in Britain, Mika Moon knows she has to hide her magic, keep her head down, and stay away from other witches so their powers don’t mingle and draw attention. And as an orphan who lost her parents at a young age and was raised by strangers, she’s used to being alone and she follows the rules...with one exception: an online account, where she posts videos "pretending" to be a witch. She thinks no one will take it seriously.

it was comfortable without being cliche, it explored multiple themes and a gentle way, including multiple ways that we can all find ourselves isolated or othered. an inclusive book that touches on a lot of the difficulties making connections, and the valuable treasure they are once made

solid story! It's a genre that can be overdone sometimes, and while I didn't find it to be terribly original, it was a solid story that I truly enjoyed.

Good story, weird incestuous lesbianism
Revisado: 08-08-21
Loved the story, loved the twists, loved the representation of diverse women. didn't like that once again the weird sister/lesbian dynamic had to be brought into it. So many weird levels of that kind of thing, and it's a trope I'm really super 100% over. as an LGBTQ+ lady myself, I'd like to see some better representation.
that said though, the story did have some really good twists and I enjoyed the depth of the plot.

refreshing and straightforward
Revisado: 05-27-20
This is not a spiritual exploration, but a cultural adventure and reflection on mortality.I especially appreciated the discussion of how silent American culture is about the death of children and infants, how such pain is considered unsightly and inconvenient, or overly dramatic. this is explored in the section about Mexico, and it left me in a very vulnerable place. I think this is an excellent book to read if you yourself are seeking a place to start healing.

original but anti-climactic ending
Revisado: 11-06-19
I will do my best to avoid spoilers, but I will simply say that for all of the magical buildup that occurs in the first part of the book, the wrap up feels sudden and anticlimactic. after all of the ominous happenings and implications, all of the really spooky stuff has already happened in the storyline and the resolution comes far too easily. The author does leave some mystery at the end so I'm assuming they're either is or will be a sequel but I wasn't particularly driven to find it. I think I'd rather stick to Darcy Coates. also as dated, wall the narrator's voice is gorgeous, she spends way too much time in a weepy demeanor and it becomes very tiring.

I'm a long-time time Supernatural Thriller fan, and this is my second books by Darcy Coates. Once again I was delightfully surprised :-) performance was unimpressive, and the narrator had difficulty maintaining accents. however, the story stands on its own. Enjoy!

Historia
In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people'" (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent meaningful cross-racial dialogue.
