Engaging story
Revisado: 07-02-23
I am an Edistonian and I enjoyed both the story and the descriptions of places on the island. I suspect there are a few characters who share things in common with current Edisto natives. My only disappointment was the narrator’s mispronunciation of several things.

Historia
It was a typical evening at a mall outside Portland, Maine. Three teenage friends waited for the movie to start. A boy flirted with the girl selling sunglasses. Mothers and children shopped together, and the manager at the video game store tended to customers. Then the shooters arrived. The chaos and carnage lasted only eight minutes before the killers were taken down. But for those who lived through it, the effects would last forever.

Historia
In the early days of Prohibition, long before Al Capone became a household name, a German immigrant named George Remus quits practicing law and starts trafficking whiskey. Within two years he's a multi-millionaire. The press calls him "King of the Bootleggers", writing breathless stories about the Gatsby-esque events he and his glamorous second wife, Imogene, host at their Cincinnati mansion, with party favors ranging from diamond jewelry for the men to brand-new cars for the women. By the summer of 1921, Remus owns 35 percent of all the liquor in the United States.

The Truth is Stranger than Fiction
Revisado: 10-30-19
The story is laid out logically and is easy to follow. The major themes are obvious. But, it drags a little at times. The author’s writing style is clean without superfluous additions. You will find the story itself incredulous or even unbelievable. You will be appalled by the amount of graft and corruption described at every level of government. You will compare the story to more modern, sensational murder trials like OJ Simpson. There are many parallels.

Wierd Plot

Little foreshadowing. Many gratuitous plot twists that were implausible. Instead of creating suspense, they were annoying. As always, Scott Brick was good.

Who Knew Architecture Could Be So Entertaining?
Revisado: 01-29-16
If you could sum up The Pillars of the Earth in three words, what would they be?
Engrossing, Satisfying, Intriguing
Who was your favorite character and why?
Aliena. She was a remarkable woman who not only survived, but flourished despite adversity. She was a leader in a world dominated by men. She also managed to retain grace and dignity despite living through some very dehumanizing situations. I shy away from gender-based discussions because they too often are just thoughtless rants. But this was a strong woman who is an example of a life well lived regardless of gender.
Which character – as performed by John Lee – was your favorite?
Jack Jackson
If you could take any character from The Pillars of the Earth out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Ellen. Beyond wanting to see her golden eyes, I think we would have quite an engaging conversation. I think I would find her wise, and insightful, but unburdened by piety. If I had a second choice, I think it would be Francis, Phillip's brother. He spent his life in the halls of power & bore witness to quite a bit of politics, power struggle, and intrigue. As with Ellen, I think he would be an engaging conversationalist.
Any additional comments?
It's interesting, Follett constructs more flaw and frailty in his male characters. This seems to be where he illustrates greed, deceit, malice, brutality. Regan Hamleigh was the only really nasty female character.
