Very compelling, but hated the end.
Revisado: 09-19-24
The story drew me in almost immediatly. I thought it was very interesting and wanted to hear what would happen next. I was very disapointed by the end, but will not spoil anything for you. I know there is a movie coming out soon, and I am curious how they will portray all of it. Ther narrator was very good. He had a great voice, and was able to make each character distinct.

Historia
The year is 1348. Thomas, a disgraced knight, has found a young girl alone in a dead Norman village. An orphan of the Black Death, and an almost unnerving picture of innocence, she tells Thomas that plague is only part of a larger cataclysm - that the fallen angels under Lucifer are rising in a second war on heaven, and that the world of men has fallen behind the lines of conflict. Is it delirium or is it faith? She believes she has seen the angels of God. She believes the righteous dead speak to her in dreams. And now she has convinced the faithless Thomas to shepherd her across a depraved landscape to Avignon.

This is a great historical fantasy novel. It's equally dark, disturbing and sad while having a few laugh out loud moments too. I highly recomend this. The narrator did a great job as well. This is a gem.

When Lenina and Bernard visit a savage reservation, we experience how Utopia can destroy humanity. Cloning, feel-good drugs, anti-aging programs, and total social control through politics, programming, and media: has Aldous Huxley accurately predicted our future? With a storyteller's genius, he weaves these ethical controversies in a compelling narrative that dawns in the year 632 A.F. (After Ford, the deity). When Lenina and Bernard visit a savage reservation, we experience how Utopia can destroy humanity.

"If one's different, one's bound to be lonely."
Revisado: 09-19-24
I avoided reading this book for a long time. Seeing that it was written in the 1930s, I assumed it would feel horribly outdated. After all, many sci-fi novels from the 1950s and 60s seem woefully out of touch when viewed through a 21st-century lens (I’m looking at you, Asimov's Foundation and Stranger in a Strange Land). I couldn’t have been more wrong about this one.
This novel is, without a doubt, one of the greatest masterpieces of dystopian fiction I’ve ever encountered. Huxley not only predicted several technological advances but also demonstrated an uncanny insight into social structures. Many of the themes he explores feel eerily relevant today. For instance, the way he foreshadows our present-day technological landscape is remarkable. Social media has become the great influencer of our time, echoing Huxley’s sentiment: “One believes things because one has been conditioned to believe them.”
The weight of this book is only enhanced by Michael York's outstanding audiobook performance. His ability to infuse each character with depth and emotion is truly remarkable, and his mastery of dialects and distinct voices adds an astonishing richness to the experience. It’s no exaggeration to say that this might be the finest audiobook performance I’ve ever heard.
In short, this is a timeless work of fiction that not only stands the test of time but also gains new layers of relevance with each passing year.

A fun mixture of Mike Hammer and sci-fi
Revisado: 09-19-24
I bought this book when it first came out, and loved it. I am happy to report that it holds up very well. The story reads like Mike Hammer in the future. A PI story with some violence, some romance and some intrigue... but not a very satisfying conclusion in my eyes. They knew they were going to start a series, and wanted to drag us along I guess. The narrator was great. He had a Joe Friday type quality, which I found suited the story very well, but he could alternate with accents and dialects when needed. I thought he was perfect for this book. I had (probably still have) the entire series when it was being released, and I look forward to listening to them all again now.

A timeless tale told by a gifted actor.
Revisado: 06-28-24
"Treasure Island" has been universally acclaimed since its publication in 1883, leaving little unsaid about this literary masterpiece. My focus here, however, is on the remarkable performance by Hans Conried. Known for his unforgettable roles as Uncle Tonoose, Captain Hook, and the Grinch, Conried delivers an exceptional performance in this rendition. His narration is infused with drama and emotion, and his character voices are superb, particularly his portrayal of Long John Silver. While he may not surpass Robert Newton, Conried's interpretation is now my second favorite.
The recording's exact date remains unclear, but it does suffer from some inherent audio issues due to its age. These issues are intermittent and occasionally make listening challenging. A remastered version of this performance would be a true gem, preserving Conried's brilliant work for future audiences. Despite the sound quality concerns, I urge you not to miss this outstanding rendition of "Treasure Island." It is unlikely that any other performance could match its excellence.

Interesting take on the religions of the Discworld
Revisado: 06-24-24
Sir Terry Pratchett stands as one of the greatest writers of our time. Through his numerous Discworld novels, he masterfully wove keen insights into the human condition, seamlessly integrating his perspectives on politics, pop culture, and romance within a fantastical and humorous universe. In this particular novel, Pratchett turns his discerning eye towards organized religion. While there are moments where the narrative becomes somewhat heavy-handed—a rarity for Sir Terry—the story remains compelling overall.
Andy Serkis' performance is nothing short of remarkable. His brilliant and nuanced portrayal of the characters adds an extraordinary depth to the narrative. I found myself wishing he could narrate every Discworld novel. His rendition is captivating, and I highly recommend this entry into the series.

Brillaint story with terrible narration.
Revisado: 06-24-24
Having read the Foundation series at least twice, with my initial read many years ago, I've come to appreciate its intricate plotting and pacing. However, this recent revisit made me aware of certain aspects that have not aged well. For instance, there is a noticeable absence of main female characters throughout the novel, and some of the technological concepts feel somewhat dated. Despite these issues, my enjoyment of the narrative remains undiminished.
What truly detracted from my experience this time was the narrator. The performance was lackluster, with poorly distinguished character voices that made it difficult to discern who was speaking at any given moment. The delivery felt bland and monotone, stripping away much of the story's vibrancy. I'm relieved to learn that the rest of the series features a different performer, which gives me hope for a more engaging listening experience going forward. Honestly, if the same narrator had been used for the entire series, I might have been inclined to discontinue.

A fascinating, multi-layered story all should read
Revisado: 04-24-24
This is the best science fiction novel I have ever read. I am a huge fan of the genre, and I feel like many "classic" novels deal very well with concepts but don't have great characters. "Gateway" is a fantastic exception. The main character, Bob, is like an onion. Thick with layers that get pealed away as the story progresses. There are times when Bob is unlikeable... at one point in particular, I found his actions to be reprehensible, but I realize that he is all too human and far from perfect (just like all of us.) The story is very good... even if it does not always go in the direction I had anticipated. The narration is also fantastic. He adds a lot of emotion and depth to the characters, and I would be happy to listen to anything else he read. Highly recomend!

Space explorers and planet-bound scientists alike prepare for mankind's first encounter with alien intelligence.

A brilliant book ruined by terrible narration.
Revisado: 04-09-24
I consider this book to be one of the greatest science fiction novels ever written. It is almost universally recognized as a true milestone of the genre, so it is a mystery to me why Audible chose to release it with such a lackluster performance. If I did not know better, I would think it was read by an AI. The reading is mostly lifeless and without emotion. It also has a lot of strange pauses and weird inflections. It was almost indistinguishable from my GPS directing me to the nearest point of interest.

As passionate as it is profound, Atlas Shrugged is one of the most influential novels of our time. In it, Rand dramatizes the main tenets of objectivism, her philosophy of rational selfishness. She explores the ramifications of her radical thinking in a world that penalizes human intelligence and integrity.

An important book perfect for our times.
Revisado: 01-24-24
There is no denying the fact that this book contains an important message- one that is even more relevant today than when it was written. The book is not without faults… some sections seem over long, even in this abridged version. This was especially noticeable in the end. The final outcome was very obvious, but the conclusion seemed to be drawn out. The narration is brilliant.
