Historia
Pretending to date my handsome new housemate was already a bad idea, but then I discover he’s no ordinary guy—he’s a mobster in hiding. And in this story, he’s not the hero, but the wicked villain. Rowan Miller isn’t used to hearing the word “no.” I guess when you’re 6’5, gorgeously tattooed, and sculpted like a Michelangelo masterpiece, women tend to throw themselves at you. But in a small town like Darkwater Hollow, a reputation as a womanizer will catch up with you—and your business—eventually.

The unexpected responses to the handsome man create unexpected situations. The author left me trying to decide what I would do.

Don't give up
Revisado: 03-05-22
The narrator's style becomes the perfect fit for the noir atmosphere of this book, once you get used to it. (I suggest playing with the speed of his speech in the Audible software until it is right for you.) It is worth listening to until the voice transports you to a dark, smoky, dimly lit bar room in the cheapest, not 100%-lethal, gin joint in L.A.
Then you are in for a treat because behind the voice is a jewel of classic black-and-white noir.

All facts are open to interpretation.
Revisado: 01-29-21
Mark Twain said, "It ain't what you don't know that gets you in trouble it's the things you're sure you know that just ain't so."
This book is magnificent.
Rosie Walsh's story was compelling and clearly written, then something would happen and my understanding of the facts of the story was turned on its head. I never felt misled, or confused. The author always told the facts I just came to the understanding that I had assumed something while reading that just wasn't so. The pieces of the puzzle would then shift and as a reader I'd say there now I have it, feeling proud of myself and then I'd read on.
As an avid reader I was amazed at Rosie Walsh's ability to write in such a way that I continued to be surprised.
I will enjoy reading this book over and over again.

This is the second Victoria Thompson book I've listened to with with Suzanne Toren as the new reader. I am getting used to her voice but I'm not sure that I would have listened to all the books un the series if it had been her voice from the beginning.
It is a tribute to Victoria Thompsons characters and plots that have made me determined to listen to the next book in the series hoping I will be able to toletate the new reader.

A new Narrator
Revisado: 01-15-21
I love Victoria Thompson's Gaslight series. I listened to the first eight books as if they were one continuing book.
The change of reader to Suzanne Toren was shocking. I find Frank Malloy's voice by this reader menacing and sarcastic. I have a clear picture of this well written character in my mind's eye, that I know from the first eight books. Fortunately or unfortunately, this picture in my head includes the voice and intonations of the reader of the first eight books. To my ear, there is a mismatch between my impressions of Frank Malloy and the snarky voice Suzanne Toren uses.
There are at least two reasons for this jolting mismatch that may be personal to me. I lived in New York City for 15 years and I know that all New Yorkers don't have to sound like James Cagney either in accent or in passive aggressive sarcasm. And I am a bit infatuated with the Detective .Malloy of books 1-8. He is a strong man who sometimes wonders, in his heart, if he's strong enough. He's a Detective with a tough shell, who inside suffers with his handicapped son and still grieves the lose of his late wife. He is strong willed enough to fight what he sees as an ill-fated attraction to Sara, and yet he undestands that his heart won't be controled. He can't be a little in love, and their society will stand in the way of complete love. He will not compromise Sara in any way so he keeps her just out of his reach. Sara is a strong-willed independent woman who is who she is because of who she was born to be. She has always had the inherited acceptance by New York Society, of belonging to one of the most powerful families in New York. Protecting her non-conventional life, is the power of her family name. Though she doesn't usually flaunt her privilege, she will pull out the 'big guns' when necessary. The fact that her family and Teddy Roosevelt's are close opens a lot of doors that seemed locked to her and Mallory until she reveals her true identity.
Murder in Chinatown is another Victoria Thompson win. I am now starting the second book read by Suzanne Toren. I am trying to meld her voice with my idea of the characters. I will not stop listening to these stories but I miss the voices of the friends I know.

Historia
London, 1812. The brutal slaughter of eight young prostitutes in a house of refuge near Covent Garden leaves only one survivor - and one witness: Hero Jarvis, reform-minded daughter of the prince regent's cousin, Lord Jarvis. When the Machiavellian power broker quashes any official inquiry that might reveal his daughter's unorthodox presence, Hero launches an investigation of her own and turns to Sebastian St. Cyr, viscount Devlin, for help.

C.S. Harris does it again
Revisado: 11-16-20
Viscount Sebastian St. Cyr, still fighting his transition to normal life after his years at war faces personal relationship problems that neither the characters or the reader could have foreseen. He becomes entwined in solving the mystery of another murder. A murder noone else feels is important enough to investigate. He immediately begins to uncover clues that appear to be disconnected. Because Sebastian can't connect these clues into an intelligible whole readers remain in the confusion with him throughout the book; all the way to the end.
C.S. Harris again weaves plot threads into the equivalent of intricate sailor's knots that remain isolated from each other until Sebastian finds the connecting clue that makes the whole complete. Solving the mystery is not the end. The clock is ticking for Sebastian to foil the plot he has uncovered.
C.S. Harris is a master of writing hand-to-hand combat scenes and just as masterful at suspenseful plotting. Every character Harris writes is a completely rounded person with strengths and shortcomings.
I will suggest C.S. Harris' novels to anyone who enjoys fully crafted writing and edge-of-the-chair mystery.

A Captivating Complex Story
Revisado: 11-05-20
Andrea Penrose created fully developed characters, each of whom not only has their own story but their own life. These lives entwine like a basket of snakes, yet as they wrap around each other they maintain their individuality. The life experience of these characters compliments or conflicts with the others to various degrees, advancing the plot. This is not a simple story and if the references to Shakespear's As You Like It and the character of Rosalind is missed by an unfocused reader, much of the early story will appear fuzzy; through no fault of the author. This book rewards a conscientious reader. The intricate plot is masterfully created.
Mary Smith's narration is a theatrical force. I was warned by a few of the reviews so I listened to the sample. The characters do have foreign accents. After the first and second chapter my ear was attuned and I understood every word. Mary Smith uses expression and some volume to portray stress and excitement, this is theatrical not annoying. Since the characters are not only English, French, Scottish and Spanish, they also speak those languages with the Caribbean island lilt. These accents are unusual, not incorrect.
Do not be put off by other reviews, listen to the sample. If you enjoy an intelligent reading experience and are willing to be involved with the story, you will be rewarded.
I will recommend this book to my friends who love to read.

Another edge-of-the-seat thrill ride
Revisado: 06-16-20
The only book better than this one is Brett Battles' first book. Both books are realistic but not predictable, informative without bogging down in technical jargon, in foreign settings that are well described, characters whose behaviors fit their personalities and plots that make sense while still keeping the reader guessing. Another one-sitting read ... even if the sun is coming up before the end. I couldn't put it down.

With only a handful of clues, Quinn struggles to find out why someone wants him dead.

A nice change: less sex and violence.
Revisado: 05-06-20
I don't think I consciously felt overwhelmed by the sex and violence in many modern detective novels but Renee Pawlish's book has an Agatha Christy-esque feel to it.
