In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by 12 outlying districts. Much better than expected.
Revisado: 04-23-25
Well well well. It's very good. I didn't expect that at all.
I bought the Hunger Games books on special mainly because they were such a good price that I couldn't resist them. I'm not the target audience and it's not the kind of books that I normally listen to.
It's really well thought out and the narration is excellent. Can easily recommend this to everyone.

Historia
The rain in Aloisville is never-ending, and no one can remember when it started. There's not much they can remember. With every drop that hits their skin, a bit of memory is washed away. Stay too long in the wet, and you'll lose everything you used to be. By the time Laverne begins keeping a journal, the small town she calls home has been irreparably changed. Every drop of water is dangerous, from leaky faucets to the near-constant rainfall, and a careless trip outside can mean a life down the drain.

Interesting premise but doesn't deliver
Revisado: 04-16-25
Initially I liked this a lot.
It has an interesting setting and it being a diary works really well here.
However the characters are all unlikable, and I can live with that, but the worst is that there's no logic behind people's actions. There's no reason for so many people to have done what they did. In real life people would have planned something like that. They would have had one person get to the necessary spot. The only reason why they did what they did is so that it can deliver the ending. I'm trying to be as vague as possible so that I don't give any spoilers.
Unfortunately it all falls apart for me because of the people's actions. Even the thing that one lady did. Makes no sense whatsoever.
I really wanted to like this and it had such a promising start but I can only recommend it if you can listen to it on Plus.

Slower than the rest of the series
Revisado: 04-15-25
It's Royce and Hadrian! I'm sure you know what you are getting into when you get to book 5 of the second series featuring them.
This one feels slower than the rest of the series. It's fine by my but it may not be for everyone.

Over the top
Revisado: 04-02-25
Lovecraft's horror is rather subtle. Arkham County very much not so.
I actually find it rather difficult to review. Because in one sense, it's not really my kind of thing. It's so over the top that it's borderline funny so I actually found it rather entertaining.
From the story to the sound design and the voice acting, well it's all dialed to the extreme. If you’re looking for eerie, creeping dread, this isn’t it.
Some madness? Plenty to be had here.

Historia
Anyone familiar with H. P. Lovecraft's work knows of the Necronomicon, the black-magic grimoire he invented as a literary prop in his classic horror stories. There have been several attempts at creating this text, yet none stand up to Lovecraft's own descriptions of the Necronomicon...until now. Fans of Lovecraftian magic and occult fiction will delight in Donald Tyson's Necronomicon, based purely within Lovecraft's own fictional universe, the Cthulhu Mythos.

Well written but not my kind of thing
Revisado: 03-19-25
I've been listening to some HP Lovecraft themed audiobooks this last while and came across this one while searching for more. It sounded interesting.
And here's the thing: It is interesting. It's also well written and ideal for Lovecraft fans.
Personally I found it a bit boring to listen to however. I prefer stories overall and well, this is not that.

Strange things exist on the periphery of our existence, haunting us from the darkness looming beyond our firelight. Black magic, weird cults, and worse things loom in the shadows. The Children of Old Leech have been with us from time immemorial. And they love us.... Donald Miller, geologist and academic, has walked along the edge of a chasm for most of his nearly 80 years, leading a charmed life between endearing absent-mindedness and sanity-shattering realization. Now, all things must converge.

Stick with it
Revisado: 03-10-25
During the first chapter I wondered if I'm listening to the right audiobook. When it finished and the next chapter started I wondered if it's a collection of short stories and I just didn't see that before I started. I almost stopped then.
However, I continued listening and I'm glad I did. The Croning isn't a masterpiece but it's rather good. It jumps between different times but I never found it difficult to follow and it had a satisfying ending. With every chapter you learn a bit more about the characters and the situation. I wasn't bored during the listen and looked forward to listening more.
Emily did a good job with the narration. I didn't find her as bad as some of the other reviews mentioned. However, I do believe that she's the wrong choice for this audiobook. The story follows a male character and well, a nice deep male voice just works better for horror.
Overall, it's a good audiobook that's worth the listen.

Over 120 years after Oscar Wilde submitted The Picture of Dorian Gray for publication, the uncensored version of his novel appears here for the first time in audio. This volume restores material, including instances of graphic homosexual content, removed by the novel's first editor, who feared it would be "offensive" to Victorians.

Surprisingly Good
Revisado: 03-05-25
I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. I listened to a couple of classics over the last while and this one really stands out. Oscar Wilde was a great writer.
Edoardo Ballerini does an exceptional job with the narration. If one can follow narrators on Audible then he would be one of the first I follow.
As for missing chapters that other reviewers mention, that doesn't seem to be the case. This is the uncensored version with 13 chapters whereas the revised version has 20 chapters. Which is correct.

Historia
Forty-eight of H.P. Lovecraft’s most important stories are brought together in this collection–available only from Audible–selected and with introductions by the award-winning, best-selling Lovecraft editor Leslie S. Klinger. Howard Philips Lovecraft was the early 20th-century genius who, almost singlehandedly, pioneered horror and scientific fiction, only to die in near-obscurity. Rediscovered by critics and scholars in the 1970s, Lovecraft’s work has influenced—by their own admission—every major horror or science-fiction writer of today.

All the Lovecraft you need
Revisado: 03-03-25
At the time of writing, this audiobook is available on Plus which is great. I've always wanted to read some of Lovecraft's stories.
Personally, I like the idea of the stories more than the actual stories themselves.
The narration is quite good and I found Edoardo Ballerini to be excellent. So much so that I'm listening to another audiobook that he narrated now. I didn't like the editor's notes on the stories however. As another review mentioned, the apologies about Lovecraft's racism and other flaws just go way overboard. And I really disliked the way Cthulhu is pronounced by the editor. He says it's the way it's supposed to be pronounced but after years of hearing it differently, I just didn't like it at all. Luckily the narrator of Call of Cthulhu pronounces it the way one would expect.
