Frustrating main character
Revisado: 10-04-24
The story premise is pretty good. The surrounding characters are very good. Then you come to the main character. He hardly grows. He's whiney and clueless. He refuses to listen to those around him. Overall he's irritating and frustrating almost to the point of wanting to put this series aside. This would be a most enjoyable story except for the glacial slow growth of the main character. I'm not going to recommend this story. I'm not going to not recommend it either. I'm neutral. If you want to get into this story realize that you're going to feel a lot of frustration with the main character, but so far the overall story is decent enough to trudge though it.

After his first college party, Dallion wakes up alone in a small medieval village in the middle of nowhere. First, he needs to figure out where he is and how to survive a mysterious world filled with magic and monsters. Then, he must uncover the secrets of being 'awakened,' which is apparently what he is. Objects in this new world are sentient, allowing the 'awakened' to mend or upgrade them by traveling into any object's unique realm and defeating the guardians that lie within.

Frustrating to listen to
Revisado: 08-02-24
This has probably been one of my hardest books to listen to. The hero is frustratingly stupid and refuses to learn, making the same mistakes over and over again. The only thing making it possible to listen to is that it has an overall interesting story and the reader does a good job. But it could have been so much better and that is what adds to the frustration. If the author had only caused the hero to grow mentally and emotionally. That alone would have turned this from a so-so story into a very good one. But all the main character does is whine and act as an entitled child. So this is a story I would not give a strong endorsement to read. It does have a decent story but it is crippled by a lack of good character development.

Historia
Kelly Frank is EarthCent's top diplomat on Union Station, but her job description has always been a bit vague. The pay is horrible and she's in hock up to her ears for her furniture, which is likely to end up in a corridor because she's behind on rent for her room. Sometimes she has to wonder if the career she has put ahead of her personal life for 15 years is worth it.

I just couldn't stop listening to it
Revisado: 05-09-24
This is a story that at first I thought I wouldn't like when I first started listening to it. However, as it progressed I found that I just couldn't stop listening. It's a very witty story that draws you in and like a bag of potato chips, you just keep eating. So if you're looking for a light , entertaining story this is one you might want to give a try. I recommend having a bag of chips nearby as you listen to it.....lol.

The perfect Way to Continue this Saga
Revisado: 06-25-20
When a series gets to a certain point they have a tendency to just start repeating themselves. Well Stephen Bennett has found a way to keep this series fresh, exciting and stimulating with this book. By taking advantage of the premise of the extremely long lives of the Kobani then projecting out 300 years into their future, he has found new challenges for them to overcome without too much repetition of what has come before. When taking in the series as a whole, this is the perfect way to continue it. I hope he continues to keep producing stories like this that will hop, skip and jump through time providing completely new challenges for Captain Mirikami and his friends to overcome. When you are not worried about time it opens up so many possibilities. I'd love to see what the Kobani will be doing another few centuries down the road.

Zack Lightman has never much cared for reality. He vastly prefers the countless science-fiction movies, books, and videogames he's spent his life consuming. And too often, he catches himself wishing that some fantastic, impossible, world-altering event could arrive to whisk him off on a grand spacefaring adventure.

Great Story - Terrible Main Character
Revisado: 07-17-19
This was an interesting story premise based on everyone's favorite UFO conspiracy theory of a government cover up. However, it is almost ruined by an idiotic, whiny and irritating main character. This story is definitely a step down for Ernest Cline. It almost seems like he rushed it out to capitalize on the popularity of "Ready Player One" and never quite gave it the polish and finish it needed. The one thing that keeps you hanging on till the end and saves the story is Wil Wheaton's performance as the reader. He once again does a great job.
I do hope that Mr. Cline does turn this into a series, however, because this story does have great potential. The main thing he will have to do, however, is greatly increase the intelligence and maturity of the main character if he wants it to be successful. Plus give the story more fit and finish.

Hard Sci-Fi at it's best
Revisado: 04-30-19
I read this book when it was originally released. This is by far one of the best hard science fiction books I have ever read. Robert L Forward seems to have done his best to make sure that this book is reasonably scientifically accurate while telling a great story about finding an intelligent species in the most unlikely of places. When I found the audible book version of it, I was overjoyed and was not disappointed at all by the performance of Todd McLaren. He did a beautiful job in his reading and really brought the story to life. My only disappointment is that they have not done an audible version of the sequel entitled Starquake, which I think is even better. So in closing I highly recommend this book. Don't be scared away that this is a hard sci-fi book. It is a story of a great adventure that is truly epic and one that I think all will enjoy, if not also come to love. Who knows, if enough people enjoy this book, maybe they'll commission the sequel to be done. One can only hope.

A Frustrating Story
Revisado: 01-24-17
Without writing any spoilers I will say this about this book. The frustrating thing about this book is that overall it had the potential of being a really good story but the author didn't seem to be able to decide if the main character was a whining cry baby, a selfish brat, or a hero. The surrounding characters are often more interesting, smarter and act more mature than the main character. The frustrating thing is when it finally seemed that "0" was finally figuring out stuff and doing what a hero should do, then the author would suddenly have him regress back to being stupid and self centered again. I know that the author was trying to get across the confusion and terror that a child might feel under the situation described in the book, but she does it in a very muddy and wishy-washy way. In fact I was barely able to finish the book because it got so bad. It's a book that you would get if you mixed Ender's Game and Lord of the Flies together but with a hero that at times is brilliant but most of the time is dumb as a rock.
So needless to say I do not recommend this book. If there is sequel and the author fixes the problems with the hero then maybe the story line can be saved.
That being said, Liam Owen does an excellent job reading and is probably one of the few reasons why I listened to the end.

Just Plain AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!
Revisado: 01-24-16
This book is just plain awesome. If you enjoyed the movie, this is a must read or listen to for you. The performance is really well done and it really immerses you in the story. It almost sounds like they used the actors from the movie along with all the sound effects too. The best thing about it is, like with every book, it fills in the gaps that you can't help but get in when the movie is made. This book will really help you to understand what's going on in the story so much better. So if you you love or even just like Star Wars this is a book that you just have to get !

The Middle Book... Every series has one
Revisado: 01-24-16
The title says it all. This is basically the midway book. Every series has one. It is the book that consolidates everything up to this point and prepares the reader for the final push to the end of the story. That being said, it is of coarse a must read, because this is the book where all the major characters are finally all brought together to prepare them for the final adventure. The one critique I have with the story line is that it gets a bit muddied as the author sets up the story for the final push to the end. The problem is that with so many different characters being brought together, you kind of loose some of the really interesting and fun interplay between the characters that you had in the first 3 stories. So that is the one let down in this book. The author tries to compensate by having a number of critical battles that Mari and Alaine, with their friends, get involved in, and he does a fairly good job keeping your interest, though with a little less depth than was present in the earlier books.
Like I said overall this is a must read if you are a fan of the series, just expect it to be what you get when you get to the middle of a story. It's important, it's needed, but it may not be as exciting as the rest of the story.
As always with this series, the reading and performance is excellent and really well done.
And I'm really glad the next book will be out soon. I can't wait!!!!!
