Worth reading, not listening to
Revisado: 10-29-24
I’ll admit, it was a tall order for the narrator to attempt accents from characters of Malaysian, Chinese, Japanese, and Boer backgrounds. That being said, she just wasn’t up to the task. While her passive narration was lovely, the accents were grating, and I’m not sure how I managed to get through it all.
As for the story, it was beautiful, though often slow and a bit maudlin. I enjoyed the author’s other work, The Gift of Rain, much more.

Excellent read

Usually I just give star ratings for books and leave the text boxes blank. Wanted to write something for this one. This book delivers on every front — concept, alien world-building, and character development are all top-notch. The story grabbed me right away, and the narrator’s delivery was flawless. I was completely absorbed from the beginning on. Can’t wait for book 2!!

Historia
Among the most celebrated and beloved novels of 2021, Anthony Doerr’s gorgeous third novel is a triumph of imagination and compassion, a soaring story about children on the cusp of adulthood in worlds in peril, who find resilience, hope—and a book. In Cloud Cuckoo Land, Doerr has created a magnificent tapestry of times and places that reflects our vast interconnectedness—with other species, with each other, with those who lived before us, and with those who will be here after we’re gone.

Instant favorite! So glad I got through the beginning!
Revisado: 03-31-22
As a huge fan of All the Light We Cannot See, I was initially very excited to read this book. Criticisms of the book’s seemingly disjointed beginning almost put me off of it, but I decided to give it a chance and am sooo glad I did!
The story goes back and forth between 6 characters from varied ages past, present, and future, which at the beginning caused me (and many other readers, it seems) frustration almost enough to return the novel. However, once the story picks up it maintains a beautifully linear narrative which never had a dull moment. I found myself so engrossed with each character I never wanted their chapter to end, only to be delighted to pick up the story of the next character.
Despite the ambitious style of storytelling, I found the end completely satisfying, hitting all the right chords, and giving a message I know I’ll be digesting for some time. I’m not the type of person who can reread books, but I know I’ll be revisiting Anna, Omeir, Seymour, Zeno, and Konstance. Ok, ok, Aethon too.

Historia
The year is 2026. The US military has a new weapon in its arsenal: an intelligent life-form so versatile that it can not only create a new generation of weapons but can become a weapon itself - entering a host’s body to manipulate (or kill) them. Admiral James Curtiss is tasked with deploying the new weapons, first in Cuba, then Venezuela, then China. But the news of the military’s breakthrough has gotten out and there are menacing forces trying to steal it. What’s more, a single man has somehow harnessed the new power and has become something more than human - godlike.

Historia
In the high mountains of Tibet, rumors are spreading. People whisper of an outbreak, of thousands of dead, of bodies pushed into mass graves. It is some strange new disease...a disease, they say, that can kill in minutes. The Chinese government says the rumors aren't true, but no one is allowed in or out of Tibet. At the Pentagon, admiral James Curtiss learns that satellite images prove that a massive genocide is underway. This is no disease. It's a weapons test. Chinese scientists have developed a way to kill based on a person's genetic traits.
