Historia
She was unmarried, untouched, and almost 30, but novelist Amanda Briars wasn't about to greet her next birthday without making love to a man. When he appeared at her door, she believed he was her gift to herself, hired for one night of passion. Unforgettably handsome, irresistibly virile, he tempted her in ways she never thought possible . . . but something stopped him from completely fulfilling her dream.

Strongly Urge You To Skip This Kleypas
Revisado: 01-29-25
One of those books where the reader is told how bright and clever the heroine is but nothing she says or does supports this description. It must be an early work of Kleypas because her later books contain witty dialogue. This has zero. We do have a gorgeous Hero besotted by a plump older woman who possesses an uninspiring face, who repeatedly whines her insecurity every time she receives a compliment. What exceedingly handsome, rich, successful, younger man who could have any woman he wants would not choose the older, overweight, insecure plain faced spinster?! Nothing made sense. I wish I had not listened to it,

Lame and Boring
Revisado: 09-15-24
This was sooooo boring and the tedium was only briefly interrupted by our heroine’s obvious and stupid decision that put her life in danger. Frankly, I wanted us all put out of our misery by that point. Only the epilogue was somewhat interesting. It’s basically an update on all the kids they all had. Sadly, that too was a bit boring. The performance of the narrator was fine but she was hamstrung by this dull dribble.

Sweet but Boring
Revisado: 08-21-24
While it was very sweet it was also very boring. I ended up playing it at night when I went to bed and set it on a timer. It put me to sleep within 15 minutes. Although it served a purpose as a sleep aid, I wish I had not bothered to purchase it.

Mediocrity of Narrator Exposes Weakness in Story
Revisado: 06-15-24
The story is set in England; yet, the narrator sounds American when not feigning the voices of the various characters. Sadly, the narrator’s skills are very limited and she should not be doing this as a profession. The difference between this narrator and someone of Rosalyn Landor’s caliber is almost painful. Rosalyn Landor brings out the best in the writing, much like a great actress can elevate a good script to its best advantage. In contrast, an only adequate actress will reveal the weaknesses in a script. This is the case here. I regret making the audible purchase. It ended up diminishing the book for me to the point it will no longer be in my collection of books I anticipate I will enjoy rereading.

Historia
When Persephone Lancaster receives a marriage proposal from the ill-tempered Duke of Kielder, she refuses - and then reconsiders. The obscene sum of money he's offering Persephone would save her family from ruin. With her characteristic optimism, she travels to the far reaches of Northumberland to wed a greatly feared stranger. Lodged deep in a thick forest infested with wild dogs, the Duke's castle is as cold and forbidding as the Duke himself, a man with terrible scars on his body and his soul.

Book Is A Better Read Than Audible
Revisado: 05-15-24
When you read this book you do not realize how your imagination improves the delivery of the lines said by the various characters.
It’s not that the narrator is bad; however, she adds nothing and by replacing your imagination she reveals the weaknesses in the story and the writing. If the narrator had been one like Rosalyn Landor, I suspect it would have vastly improved the audible experience. Unfortunately, despite being someone who enjoys rereading books, this audible experience has eliminated any wish to reread this book. It is not nearly as clever and endearing a story as I initially thought.

Nowhere Near as Good as Her Prior Books
Revisado: 10-29-23
SPOILER ALERT. The characters were not as well-developed as in My Baseborn Bridegroom nor A Substitute Wife for the Prizefighter (my two favorites). You never really know why H was fixated on h. Rather, the reader is expected to accept that which is not plausible based on what we we do know. So, the reader is simply expected to believe this handsome, stylish. complex spy/assassin with a traumatic background is deeply in love with a rather plain, unaccomplished, glorified servant to the queen. Which explains why the reader never becomes invested in either H and h or their relationship. Based on what we are told, there is no chemistry - plenty of sex but zero chemistry. The plot is also weak. The H and h’s relationship is never tested or in jeopardy. The fear of how the Queen will react is short lived and resolved quickly and adds no drama or real interest to the plot. Also, we know from the beginning H’s imprisonment will be temporary. Again, no drama, no interesting plot twist. While I don’t deeply regret reading this book I also would not have regretted saving the time and money with passing on it. The reader does a fine job with what she had to work with but it is not possible to elevate this lackluster story.

Not Julia’s Best
Revisado: 05-29-23
Sadly, this was not one of Julia’s best. It lacked the humor and interesting characters usually found in a Julia Quinn romance. It was downright flat and tedious most of the time.

Simply Awful
Revisado: 05-21-23
The author tells a story which should have been intense and emotional into a boring and absurd tale. The little 3-year-old child, whose life is in danger, is merely a plot device. At no time do you sense our h is genuinely devastated by her brother’s murder and loves her nephew as a mother would love the child she has raised since his birth. Minimal character development that manages to have the characters react in a way contrary to how any human would react in that same situation. To top it off, the narrator fairly shouts the narration in a truly grating voice. This audible is free and; yet, I paid the price of wasting my time. Skip this book and audible and choose Julie Garwood’s Ransom.

He vows to never risk his heart again. She hides her love to avoid rejection. A marriage of convenience is not what either of them wished for. Overlooked by society and underappreciated in her family, Ellen Bringhurst has resigned herself to spinsterhood and a life of reading. Until her match-making friends contrive to reintroduce Ellen to the man she has secretly loved since their shared childhood. As the younger son to an earl, Marcus Calvert must wed in order to inherit his estate. Still nursing a broken heart, he prefers a practical approach to matrimony rather than romantic love.

It’s only okay
Revisado: 03-22-23
The plot is extremely thin to the point of being nonexistent, This is largely due to our heroine being dull in conversation and action.
It’s hard to imagine why our Hero falls in love with her. There are a few scenes which explain our Hero’s appreciation of the heroine’s companionship and work ethic; however, never deep love. Our heroine also comes across as humorless, passionless, cold even, despite supposedly having carried a lifetime tender for our Hero. As I write this I am tempted to knock down the score.

Unbelievably Absurd and Annoying

This story is soooo predictable, absurd and dated. Ignore all the great reviews. The voice of the hero is also very annoying. I regret wasting my monthly credit.
