It's all expertly weaved into a mystery located in a region I know and love. All of Martin Walkers books bring me great joy.

For most of my adult life I've admired and read anything and everything regarding this most amazing and important man. I've visited and walked where he walked in the US and France, for me it's important to do so. This work allows the reader to better understand and appreciate the man during certain events that he influenced throughout his life rather than any one particular event. Such details can be found elsewhere. I have a much better understanding of the man he was, why and his unwavering beliefs and character.

The author briefly discusses the Huguenot movement without detail. Claims without certification his surname is European and being a protestant he therefore is Huguenot. May I suggest all 17th century North American surnames have European roots. This book is really about the authors modern day Evangelical beliefs vs. Catholicism. Having little or nothing to do with French Huguenots. His Evangelical assertions draw from the John Wesley Evangelical movement, again having little or nothing to do with French Huguenots. I would not recommend this book to anyone seeking knowledge about French Huguenots.

Excellent overview of the establishment and development of New Netherlands and especially New Amsterdam. The cultural differences and insatiable greed of the Europeans could never be understood by the native Indians; their culture and existence would be lost to history. This book is an excellent starting point for further study.

While researching my family's genealogy I've become convinced I descend from French Huguenot refugees to colonial America; though unable to find valid proof. Jonathan Catterlin/Casterline born Jan 1754, Wantage, Sussex, New Jersey (BCA). This book provides the basic information needed to better understand the who, when and why Huguenots left France to find religious peace and freedom and offers several clues for further research.
I thoroughly enjoyed this introduction to Huguenot history.

Native Americans hopeless circumstance

This is but one of many books I've read regarding the invasion of America by Europeans.
The natives have no hope for survival or continuation of their life style. The opposite views of all things and beliefs with the new arrivals renders it hopeless that the two peoples could ever coexist. One must be destroyed for the other to benefit, regrettable.
Excellent book and excellent narrator.

Since I was a little boy I've been fascinated by certain people and events. Lafayette rose to the top and I've read numerous books and articles about him. In later years I could visit locations and sites and walk down the street he walked, through the doors he walked through, view the battlefield as he did, pause and imagine. Perhaps a hundred locations in the US and dozens in France. This book brings his entire life together and focuses on his principles and vision of a better world for everyone not a fortunate few. Lafayette will continue to guide me and I thank Mike Duncan for his excellent book.
