Historia
If you had to name the most destructive conflicts in human history, you likely wouldn’t put the Thirty Years’ War near the top of that list, but in fact, this conflict resulted in more than eight million fatalities throughout Europe. It resulted in widespread destruction, and it bankrupted the majority of the powers involved. For such a destructive war, the Thirty Years’ War is not well-known, and yet it changed the geopolitical face of Europe as well as the role of religion and nation-states in society. This audiobook tells the compelling story of the Thirty Years’ War.

Concise and Complete
Revisado: 05-01-25
There are several excellent books about the Thirty Years War. They are both more detailed, scholarly and much longer and thicker.
This book is not meant to compete with them This is a very good concise overview of the subject. It hits all the high points , explains the causes and conclusion of the conflict. If someone wanted a concise explanation of the conflict I would not hesitate recommending this book
The only slight drawback in the book is the narrator. He is ok. I only wish the narrator selected was a bit more dynamic.

Historia
The War of the Spanish Succession, fought at the beginning of the 18th century, was the last major war engaged in by French King Louis XIV, the legendary Sun King, and it was also the most famous of all military conflicts during his reign. While the length and the scope of the conflict are the primary reasons why people have given so much attention to it, another reason for its historical popularity is, no doubt, the fact that its outcome humbled the French king, to the delight of his many critics. He was, after all, the one who had given himself the lofty nickname of “the Sun King".

It's Worth The Read
Revisado: 04-30-25
In the past I consistently discounted the Charles River publications as the History "Cliff Notes" equivalent. I have changed my mind. It has a valuable contribution to understanding and supplementing readings.
While reading a book about the Hapsburgs they mentioned the War of Spanish Succession but only discussed the war for about 2 paragraphs. It didn't answer all my questions. I could have purchased a book covering the topic, There are many excellent lengthy books on the subject. I simply didn't want to spend in excess of 10 hours listening to the subject.
So I used Charles River Editors. It gave me a concise overview of the subject and supplemented my main reading. Now I plan on regularly using Charles River Editors books to supplement my main reading. It helps with understanding the main subject of my reading and expands my intellectual horizons.

George Orwell's classic satire of the Russian Revolution is an intimate part of our contemporary culture, quoted so often that we tend to forget who wrote the original words! This must-read is also a must-listen!

Pigs are forever
Revisado: 04-16-25
I was made to read this book in High School 65 years ago. As with so many things in life I didn't fully appreciate nor understand it.
Rereading it is a wonderful event. The book is timeless. Nothing changes in the world. pigs remain pigs. All you need to do is look around you. or watch TV or read a newspaper.

Historia
From the assassination that triggered World War I to the ethnic warfare in Serbia, Bosnia, and Croatia, the Balkans have been the crucible of the 20th century, the place where terrorism and genocide first became tools of policy. Chosen as one of the Best Books of the Year by the New York Times, and greeted with critical acclaim as "the most insightful and timely work on the Balkans to date" (The Boston Globe), Kaplan's prescient, enthralling, and often chilling political travelogue is already a modern classic.

Historia
No one - fictional or factual - embodies the Jazz Age as completely as F. Scott Fitzgerald's Jay Gatsby. First published in 1925, this legendary novel continues to enthrall generations as it serves as a lens to view our not-so-distant past. Many of our notions about that period are taken from this book. Bathtub gin, flappers, and house parties that last all week enliven Fitzgerald's classic tale. Stylish and engaging, The Great Gatsby is also a startling literate portrait of Gatsby's search for meaning in his opulent world.

In this insightful travelogue, Robert D. Kaplan, geopolitical expert and bestselling author of Balkan Ghosts and The Revenge of Geography, turns his perceptive eye to a region that for centuries has been a meeting point of cultures, trade, and ideas. He undertakes a journey around the Adriatic Sea, through Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, and Greece, to reveal that far more is happening in the region than most news stories let on.

What is it trying to do ?
Revisado: 03-29-25
The author is a knowledgeable, experienced, respected journalist. I have enjoyed a couple of his other books such as Balkan Ghosts
Then there is this book. What is the purpose of the book ? A historical summary ? Personal travel memoir ? A philosophical musing ? A travel guide ? It tries to be all these things and it doesn't work. If this book was meant to be un update to the book Balkan Ghosts, it failed miserably.
Parts of this book are really very good. Too many are not. It is a disjointed, unfocused rambling and sometimes incoherent book.
All it's weaknesses are magnified by the poor narration.

Come with us to an Enchanted Place, a forest where Winnie-the-Pooh lived with Piglet, Rabbit, Owl, Eeyore, Kanga, and Little Roo. The stories are about Christopher Robin and these good companions having wonderful times getting in and out of trouble. It is all very exciting and, really, quite thrilling no matter how young or old you may be. It is painful to try and imagine what the world would be like without them.

Historia
In 1961, at the height of the Cold War, the United States severed diplomatic relations with Cuba, where a momentous revolution had taken power three years earlier. For more than half a century, the stand-off continued—through the tenure of ten American presidents and the fifty-year rule of Fidel Castro. His death in 2016, and the retirement of his brother and successor Raúl Castro in 2021, have spurred questions about the country’s future. Spanning more than five centuries, Cuba provides us with a front-row seat as we witness the evolution of the modern nation.

A New View
Revisado: 11-10-24
I was a teenager when Castro came to power and Batista ram from Cuba. My views of the country were always influenced by what was written in the US papers and US government pronounced and announced. Tis book helped bring perspective to events in the country at the time.
The book provides a well balanced perspective of the country and "why it is the way it is; It has helped me view the country in a revised light.
There is a reason it was awarded a Pulitzer prize. It is well deserved.

When the book ends in 52 weeks I hit the repeat button and do it all over again. Either I am a slow inattentive learner or I love this book. Or. Maybe both
