Historia
In 1965, Frances Adams is at an English country fair where a fortune-teller makes a bone-chilling prediction: One day, Frances will be murdered. It is a prediction that sparks her life’s work—trying to solve a crime that hasn’t happened yet. Nearly sixty years later, Annie Adams is summoned to a meeting at the sprawling country estate of her wealthy and reclusive great-aunt Frances. But by the time Annie arrives in the quaint English village of Castle Knoll, Frances is found murdered, just like she always said she would be.

Requires Patience
Revisado: 04-20-24
This is not a book for casual listening. There are a multitude of characters stretching over three generations. It was at times difficult to keep track of them. I don't mind a complicated mystery but if I had known what this story would be like, I might have chosen a different time to listen to it.

Historia
On his last combat deployment, Lt. Cmdr. James Reece's entire team was killed in an ambush that also claimed the lives of the aircrew sent in to rescue them. But when those dearest to him are murdered on the day of his homecoming, Reece discovers that this was not an act of war by a foreign enemy but a conspiracy that runs to the highest levels of government. Now, with no family and free from the military's command structure, Reece applies the lessons that he's learned in over a decade of constant warfare toward revenge.

Well written and very well performed, but...
Revisado: 06-25-23
I think that it is possible to write a novel such as this - one that paints a picture of what high intrigue in a political setting is like and what it takes to be a Navy Seal - without making the author's politics known. Don't we get enough of that divisiveness ALL THE TIME these days? I read fiction to get away from that. That spoiled the book for me. And the violence was somewhat over the top.

Taking a Break

The writing is good as is the character development, but there are too many characters to keep adequate track of for an Audible book.

Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother. Frustrating!
Revisado: 07-15-22
I kept waiting for a hook, a twist, a compelling irony. In the end, there was nothing, making the book a complete waste of time. This book is a stepmother/stepdaughter bonding story masquerading as a thriller - emphasis on "masquerading". Yeech! And it drives me nuts when a protagonist does such obviously stupid things. Why would you hide a duffel bag full of hundreds of thousands of dollars in the kitchen sink cabinet when your fugitive husband is being sought by the authorities for financial fraud?! Does the phrase " search warrant" hold any meaning for you?! The book is just stupid and the characters are not at all sympathetic.

Introducing Wyoming's Sheriff Walt Longmire in this riveting novel from the New York Times best-selling author of Dry Bones, the first in the Longmire series, the basis for the hit Netflix original series Longmire. Johnson draws on his deep attachment to the American West to produce a literary mystery of stunning authenticity, full of memorable characters.

Worthy Alternative to Other Western Novels
Revisado: 03-01-22
I have been reading the CJ Box Joe Pickett books and decided to try this novel as an alternative to that Western- based series. Based on this book, I probably will try others by this author. I think the writing is a little more interesting than the Box books, although I will continue to read Box as well.
I agree with another reviewer that there is a thicket of facts to get through, which can be a bit much but I assume this is meant to anchor the setting, the (presumably recurring) characters, and the Western culture, which includes a much welcomed portrayal of Native American characters and culture in Wyoming. Since this is the first in the series, presumably it won't be necessary to be as detailed in the future.
My only other observation is that based on the main character's bio, he is in his early fifties. However, the narrator makes him sound like he's in his 80's. It doesn't bother me enough to abandon the series but it does take some getting used to.

The plane circled in the dark. Joe Pickett could just make out down below a figure in the snow and timber, and then three other figures closing in. There was nothing he could do about it. And Joe knew that he might be their next target. The Cates family had always been a bad lot. Game warden Joe Pickett had been able to strike a fierce blow against them when the life of his daughter April had been endangered, but he'd always wondered if there'd be a day of reckoning.

Intriguing Until The End

The writing is excellent. The characters are pretty well developed, especially if you have read previous books in the series. The ending was somewhat disappointing if you believe in justice.

Tedious
Revisado: 10-28-21
The premise of the story was not bad and I like the idea of archivists as the new super heroes. :-) However, there was an overabundance of red herrings which got to be annoying. The ending was not particularly satisfying and seemed to be a set-up for a sequel. Also, why is it that every African-American character in Audible books is given a voice with a southern accent? The African-American character in this story spent his entire life in Ohio before relocating to D.C. later in life. Yet he speaks like he grew up in the South. This is a recurring and annoying practice when it comes to the portrayal of African-American characters' voices in Audible books. This is not a criticism of Southern accents or any other accents. Rather it is a criticism of a stereotype. The African American character should no more have a Southern accent than the other characters who also grew up in Ohio. It's annoying and distracting.

Please Make It Stop!
Revisado: 12-07-20
This is the second most stupid book I've read in recent years. Will someone please tell authors and publishing companies that these dumb damsel-in-distress novels are insulting. I am so sick of female protagonists who are educated career women but who don't have a lick of common sense. Are we seriously supposed to relate to these women? The premise of the book was initially intriguing but it quickly dissolved into a morass of stupid actions, endless whining, and absurd choices. Further, I agree with the reviewer who said that all of the male voices sound like stoners. That is the perfect description of the male voices. Would it kill Audible, or whoever, to pay two narrators - one female, one male - to narrate the female and male parts, respectively? The narration was horrible. Save your money.

Stay As Far Away From This Book As Possible
Revisado: 08-06-20
This is, hands down, the WORST book I have consumed in years! The main character has NO - I repeat NO - redeeming qualities. She is too vapid, self- absorbed, shallow and ignorant to engender empathy, sympathy, or respect. What woman would repeatedly avoid administering a simple pregnancy test (which she had in her apartment!) if she thought she were pregnant?! What woman would seriously consider remaining in a relationship with a boyfriend who lied to her about his marital status and who embezzled millions of dollars?! Who goes knocking on the door of a suspected killer with no plan other than ascertaining his presence? The nonsensical actions of this ridiculous creature are to numerous to describe. Save your money, and if you got the book for free, save your time.

Opposite Ends of the Legal Spectrum
Revisado: 07-24-20
I enjoyed the tour through polar opposite ends of the legal world - the barely-making-ends-meet poverty lawyers and the top financial tier corporate law firms. It strikes me as an accurate description and was enlightening. This is not a whodunit or a courtroom thriller but rather a revealing look at the real manner in which law is practiced.
The one criticism I would make concerns the narration. The narrator has every African-American character speak with a deep Southern drawl. Inhabitants of D.C. who were born and raised there do not speak with that affectation. (I have to assume that at least some of the characters were indeed born and raised there.) That exaggerated drawl was inauthentic and irritating. Notably, the main character, who actually grew up in the South, had no such drawl.
