Historia
As a commoner, Kaylina Korbian's duty is to bow to aristocrats, avoid rabble-rousers, and call the haughty royal rangers "my lord"—especially the arrogant Vlerion of Havartaft. Handsome, powerful, and a legendary swordsman, he's the last person you'd want to cross. Naturally, Kaylina irks him at their first meeting, and he arrests her. Unbeknownst to her, the city is dealing with political strife and assassinations, and the rangers are on edge. Kaylina must work with Vlerion to clear suspicion from her name, even as she unearths a dark secret about him that will either bind them together.

A fantasy about dangerous men
Revisado: 03-09-25
In general, I love Buroker’s novels and own many of them. This one walks a delicate line of finding violence and personal risk attractive, and I didn’t enjoy that undercurrent. The love interest isn’t violent on purpose, but that doesn’t mean the theme isn’t laced heavily with the concept of sexual domination and subjugation, which I don’t think should be encouraged or celebrated. I also don’t care for the near-rape scenes in several of her novels.
Buroker’s stories are all compelling, full of hope, focusing on exasperating heroines and hero underdogs who win against the odds, and I usually find them highly enjoyable. Her characters are well developed and interesting. This one is just uncomfortable enough that I probably won’t buy the rest of the series. I’m just not interested in the theme of sexual dominance and violence, even if the cursed castle, interpersonal relationships and intrigue are all very compelling.

Historia
Why we think it’s a great listen: An all-time Audible favorite that mixes historic fiction, adventure, and romance with one of the most fascinating literary devices: time travel. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love. In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. But their blissful reunion is shattered....

Too much glorified spouse abuse
Revisado: 05-29-23
This would be a great story if it wasn’t for the author “enjoying” her spousal abuse. It’s pretty messed up.

Historia
Amelia Scarcliffe’s monstrous brood, harbingers of Cthulhu, will soon spawn. Her songs spell insanity, death...and illimitable wealth. And Moriarty will do anything to get his hands on gold, even if it means tearing down the walls between this world and a realm of horrors. Meanwhile, after Sherlock Holmes’s last tangle with the Order of Dagon, horrifying monsters haunt the Thames, and madness stalks the streets of Whitechapel. Gang war between Moriarty’s thugs and the powerful cult can only bring more terror - unless Holmes and Dr. Watson can prevent it.

Way too gory
Revisado: 09-06-22
I enjoyed the other stories in this series more than this one, though all are heavy in gore. However, this one is just so gross that I cannot recommend it to the casual reader. Every chapter is full of gory, disgusting descriptions and I wish I had not listened to it.

Historia
For the Sake of the Game is the latest volume in the award-winning series from New York Times best-selling editors Laurie R. King and Leslie S. Klinger, with stories of Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, and friends in a variety of eras and forms. King and Klinger have a simple formula: Ask some of the world's greatest writers-regardless of genre - to be inspired by the stories of Arthur Conan Doyle. The results are surprising and joyous.

Mostly good stories, with one horrific exception
Revisado: 07-24-22
Most of these stories are great, but one is excessively violent with a gang rape that is completely inappropriate for a Sherlock style story. The story itself was clever, aside from the gratuitous violence, but I don’t think it should have been included.

Historia
The enigmatic army officer Captain JAC Smethwick is a veteran of the The Charge of the Light Brigade. But when he visits Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson he has more on his mind than the conflict in the Crimea. There is a mystery surrounding the death of his former employer, Lord Cardigan. Smethwick believes that the man responsible for his death is none other than the former Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli. Holmes sends Watson off to Deene Park, Lord Cardigan's estate, to investigate and question the victim's widow - the colourful and flirtatious Adeline de Horsey.

Holmes is too much of a jerk and Watson has no subtlety
Revisado: 07-10-22
I don’t think the characters are particularly representative of the originals. The ‘real’ Holmes would never leave Watson to potentially freeze to death all night long, nor publicly ridicule him. And Watson is supposed to be a gentleman, not a thinly disguised bro. Not my favorite.

Good story; problematic production
Revisado: 07-07-22
I would have enjoyed this very good story much more if it were not for the abrupt chapter junctions, sight volume changes in between chapters (the woman’s voice was always louder and more clear, and the men’s voices more quiet and muffled) and the occasional missing words or duplicated sentences. Additionally, the female narrator sounds too monotonous and at least a decade or two older than the 22 year old she portrays, which is a bit odd. Otherwise it is a good story and I will probably buy the others in the series, although possibly in Kindle version and not the audiobooks.
