Historia
With the country in the grip of economic malaise, and worried about her business, Maisie Dobbs is relieved to accept an apparently straightforward assignment from an old friend to investigate certain matters concerning a potential land purchase. Her inquiries take her to a picturesque village in Kent during the hop-picking season, but beneath its pastoral surface she finds evidence that something is amiss. Mysterious fires erupt in the village with alarming regularity, and a series of petty crimes suggests a darker criminal element at work.

Historia
Architect Douglas Layton has lost everything. The balcony of one of his beautiful music halls collapsed during a packed performance, killing dozens. Layton knows the flaw was not in his design; someone else must have caused the dreadful catastrophe. But with no proof, Layton finds himself facing a five-year prison sentence. When he is finally freed, Layton starts over with a new name and identity, taking a job as a set painter. But as Layton begins to discover dead bodies hidden within theater halls across London, it soon becomes clear something darker is chasing him.

My first by this author. Story was good. Was a little slow in the beginning but before long I was hooked. The narrator made this an especially interesting story.

Compelling story within history.

What made this most enjoyable was the narrator. Captivated me from the sample and didn’t diminish through the end of the story. We’ll done! Story was quite good and the performance made it exceptional for me.

Enjoyed this, and though it may not have the complexity of previous Bosch stories it was captivating and topical without political bias. Always enjoy Titus Welliver narration, which made this performance exceptional.

A mediocre story
Revisado: 12-17-22
Writing was unimaginative with too many cliches. Story had a kernel of an interesting plot but got bogged down in too many unimportant descriptions. I lost interest, skipping through chapters several times. Narration was sophomoric.

I only lasted for a few chapters. It moved so slowly and the main character wasn’t interesting enough to keep my attention. Perhaps for a young audience.

Surprisingly compelling
Revisado: 12-04-21
The story was good and, as other reviews stated, slow but rich in the details linking relationships. The writing held unique descriptions that cleverly and charmingly avoided cliches. The narration was the most enjoyable I’ve heard in a long time and for me gave this story a much greater depth.

A basic story
Revisado: 11-13-21
I appreciate the work it takes to write and have accounted for that in my 3 stars. I think the storyline has a kernel of interest at its core. The writing however is not terribly imaginative and there is an over use of cliches that may be found in any beginner’s writings. I also want to give credit to narrators who undertake reading of an entire novel alone. That being said, this narrator’s delivery seemed inexperienced, with a distracting over pronunciation of most of the characters and a sophomoric cadence to dialogue.

Did not resonate with this
Revisado: 09-21-21
For me this took too long to build. I had a different sense of it from the sample and was intrigued. It lingered much to long relaying the daily writings in a vintage journal that may have been pertinent to the book’s base but was truthfully was too boring to stay with.

Historia
Nestled into the cliffs in southern Italy's Amalfi coast, Positano is an artist's vision, with rows of brightly hued houses perched above the sea and picturesque staircases meandering up and down the hillside. Santina, still a striking woman despite old age and the illness that saps her last strength, is spending her final days at her home, Villa San Vito. The magnificent 18th-century palazzo is very different from the tiny house in which she grew up. And as she decides its fate, she must confront the choices that led her here so long ago.

Wanted to like this

I tried to hang in with his book. Like other reviews I agree the narration was beautiful and compelled me to stay with the story for nearly half the book. Descriptions were well crafted. Vignettes poetically detailed scent, sound and ambiance so well at times I felt I was there. The concept was initially interesting, the story just moved much too slowly for me.
