Historia
John Kapoor had already amassed a small fortune in pharmaceuticals when he founded Insys Therapeutics. It was the early 2000s, a boom time for painkillers, and he developed a novel formulation of fentanyl, the most potent opioid on the market.

Just ok
Revisado: 04-24-23
This was interesting - but doesn’t compare to more scandalous stories like Empire of Pain and Bad Blood. I did learn a lot about fentanyl sprays and certainly the leaders of this company were selfish and greedy but there wasn’t a lot of nuance or thrilling scandal in this book.

Historia
On a cool, overcast afternoon in April 2016, a salacious tip arrived at the L.A. Times that reporter Paul Pringle thought should have taken, at most, a few weeks to check out: a drug overdose at a fancy hotel involving one of the University of Southern California’s shiniest stars—Dr. Carmen Puliafito, the head of the prestigious medical school. Pringle, who’d long done battle with USC and its almost impenetrable culture of silence, knew reporting the story wouldn’t be a walk in the park. USC is the largest private employer in the city of L.A., and it casts a long shadow.

This was one of my favorite audiobooks of the year. A fascinating and true story of coverup and scandal. Sometimes felt like a thriller - the characters are so crazy! Highly recommended

Historia
On March 26, 2018, rescue workers discovered a crumpled SUV and the bodies of two women and several children at the bottom of a cliff beside the Pacific Coast Highway. Investigators soon concluded that the crash was a murder-suicide, but there was more to the story: Jennifer and Sarah Hart, it turned out, were a white married couple who had adopted the six Black children from two different Texas families in 2006 and 2008. Behind the family's loving facade, however, was a pattern of abuse and neglect that went ignored.

Very interesting and depressing - feel the book could have been broader
Revisado: 04-24-23
This was very interesting and engaging. I do recommend the book. I wish the book had been more in depth about their life with the mothers and the murder itself - I understand it was supposed to be the childrens’ back story but I was left feeling like I needed more.

Historia
Over the last decade, a single innovation has massively fueled digital black markets: cryptocurrency. Crime lords inhabiting lawless corners of the internet have operated more freely—whether in drug dealing, money laundering, or human trafficking—than their analog counterparts could have ever dreamed of. By transacting not in dollars or pounds but in currencies with anonymous ledgers, overseen by no government, beholden to no bankers, these black marketeers have sought to rob law enforcement of their chief method of cracking down on illicit finance: following the money.

I really enjoyed this book. I learned so much and loved the investigator perspective on the crazy world of crypto crime. After this book, I listened to American Kingpin about the Silk Road and loved it (not redundant at all).

Historia
In 2011, a 26-year-old libertarian programmer named Ross Ulbricht launched the ultimate free market: the Silk Road, a clandestine website hosted on the Dark Web where anyone could trade anything - drugs, hacking software, forged passports, counterfeit cash, poisons - free of the government's watchful eye. It wasn't long before the media got wind of the new website where anyone - not just teenagers and weed dealers but terrorists and black hat hackers - could buy and sell contraband detection-free.

One of my favorite audiobooks of all time. Absolutely gripping, I could not stop listening. My mind never wandered. What a crazy (and true) story. HIGHLY recommended. I’ll be struggling to find my next book because nothing will top this.
