History - okay. Theories - not so much
Revisado: 03-14-24
I appreciated the author’s research about Rudolf Diesel’s life and his technical research and work. His invention of the Diesel engine truly was a remarkable invention. If the book had just been about these - I would have given it a higher score.
But - toward the end of the book, the author began to connect several dots that were pretty far apart. He didn’t come close to convincing me of his theory that Rudolf Diesel wasn’t drowned as the world thought at the time.
I wish I had stopped reading with about 3 chapters left.

Historia
The unlikeliest of champions, the 1949-50 City College Beavers were extraordinary by every measure. During that remarkable season, this unheralded group of city kids would stun the basketball world by becoming the only team in history to win the NIT and NCAA tournaments in the same year. This team, though, proved to be extraordinary in another way: During the following season, all of the team’s starting five were arrested by New York City detectives. The story centers on Eddie Roman and Floyd Layne, each caught up in the scandal, each searching for a path to personal redemption.

A must read for the college basketball fan
Revisado: 12-21-23
I’ve been a college basketball season ticket holder for 50 years. As all fans know - there are ups and downs over the years. But it’s hard to imagine what the fans of City College of New York endured just a year after their team won both the National Invitational Tournament and the NCAA Tournament in the same year - the only time a team won both tourneys in the same year. Just a year later, it was revealed that several members of that team had received money to shave points from games played. To that time, this was the largest scandal to hit intercollegiate sports.

Who understood the risk inherent in the assumption of ever-rising real-estate prices, a risk compounded daily by the creation of those arcane, artificial securities loosely based on piles of doubtful mortgages? Michael Lewis turns the inquiry on its head to create a fresh, character-driven narrative brimming with indignation and dark humor, a fitting sequel to his number-one best-selling Liar’s Poker.

Michael Lewis is one of my favorite authors and I had thought about this book for years, but was a bit hesitant since my interest in Wall Street wasn’t at the top of my list. But I finally took the plunge and am happy I did.

Historia
In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.

How ambition can bridge ethical & moral boundaries
Revisado: 06-07-23
I had seen the documentary on HBO - The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley and was amazed that a company could grow as fast and as large as Theranos - based on claims that didn’t exist. There have been con artists throughout history and this book proves that they’re still around.
The book is thoroughly researched and well written. Great read/listen.

From the legendary actor and best-selling author: a novel about the making of a star-studded, multimillion-dollar superhero action film...and the humble comic books that inspired it. Funny, touching, and wonderfully thought-provoking, while also capturing the changes in America and American culture since World War II.

Historia
Longer than Moby-Dick and nearly as ambitious,The Baseball 100 is a one-of-a-kind work by award-winning sportswriter and lifelong student of the game Joe Posnanski that tells the story of the sport through the remarkable lives of its 100 greatest players. In the book’s introduction, Pulitzer Prize-winning commentator George F. Will marvels, “Posnanski must already have lived more than 200 years. How else could he have acquired such a stock of illuminating facts and entertaining stories about the rich history of this endlessly fascinating sport?”

Very long, but a great one for baseball fans
Revisado: 05-17-23
As a lifelong baseball fan, this one was a fun listen. As the author says - much of the book is to encourage debate. That is - is his selection of the top ten players the same as mine? Nope - but his research helped me to see why he chose his group.
This is one that I’ll listen to again…..

Historia
At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

Historia
The Teammates is the profoundly moving story of four great baseball players who have made the passage from sports icons - when they were young and seemingly indestructible - to men dealing with the vulnerabilities of growing older. At the core of the audiobook is the friendship of these four very different men - Boston Red Sox teammates Bobby Doerr, Dominic DiMaggio, Johnny Pesky, and Ted Williams - who remained close for more than 60 years.

What a great story about how baseball used to be
Revisado: 02-15-23
I grew up listening to baseball games on the radio in the 60's and this book took me back to those days. I know the owners of baseball then kept the players in virtual slavery, as a fan I have to say I loved the fact that my favorite players were always there in April.
And I would have to say that friendships as portrayed in this book probably couldn't come about these days.
Saying all this - I loved this book.

Historia
In 1978, in the tailwind of the golden age of air travel, flight attendants were the epitome of glamor and sophistication. Fresh out of college and hungry to experience the world―and maybe, one day, write about it―Ann Hood joined their ranks. After a grueling job search, Hood survived TWA’s rigorous Breech Training Academy and learned to evacuate seven kinds of aircraft, deliver a baby, mix proper cocktails, administer oxygen, and stay calm no matter what the situation.

Enjoyed this book, except for one small thing
Revisado: 01-03-23
Ann Hood did a good job in covering her career from beginning to end.
But as she progressed through her training to her time as a flight attendant, many times I was left to guess what year she was moving through. She quoted a few dates in the beginning and toward the end, but it would have been helpful to me (who was flying for business during her tenure with TWA) to have known when she moved to St Louis for example
