I only try on one of Nina’s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it’s like. But she soon finds out...and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it’s far too late. But I reassure myself: The Winchesters don’t know who I really am. They don’t know what I’m capable of....

Definitely engrossing
Revisado: 05-30-23
Definitely engrossing for a beach read kind of psychological thriller. Well done for its genre. But I wasn’t blown away. 3 stars for story - some things might have been better off explained- like Cecelia’s behavior w nanny and why Enzo hung around so much. 4 stars for entertainment value- I finished audiobook in 1.5 days of gardening. 5 stars for narration. She does a great job with characters & actors.

Fast paced read
Revisado: 01-27-19
Fast paced & keeps you reading. Lowered stars to 3 from 4 because there are too many weak & unbelievable women characters for this day & age.

Historia
FBI Special Agent Matthew Roarke is closing in on a bust of a major criminal organization in San Francisco when he witnesses an undercover member of his team killed right in front of him on a busy street, an accident Roarke can't believe is coincidental. His suspicions put him on the trail of a mysterious young woman who appears to have been present at each scene of a years-long string of accidents and murders, and who may well be that most rare of killers: a female serial.

Slow-moving
Revisado: 03-03-18
I have read a lot of detective novels and I’m usually pretty lenient in my reviews. However, I found this one to be slow to develop with a weak plot. There was not enough character development to keep my interest either. I did finish it, and even though other reviews suggest the next few in the series are better, I don’t think I’ll give them a try.

Mixed feelings; 3.5 Stars
Revisado: 07-14-15
3.5 Stars. The reader was perfect for this book! Otherwise I had mixed feelings about the novel. In my opinion it's only like Gone Girl in the tone, not the plot. I didn't feel that Tiffany's evolution into Anna was believable. They seemed more like two different people to me until possibly the end of the book. I did feel the last 15% or so of the story redeemed the book somewhat. It was a decent summer novel to listen to on a long drive.

Not his best but good WWII historical fiction
Revisado: 03-31-15
IMO This is not Ken Follett's best novel, but it's a good one. Decent World War II refresher. Good, strong characters, especially the women. I liked the first of this trilogy better and am looking forward to reading the final of the three soon. John Lee is an outstanding narrator - one of my favorites!!!

Historia
The rural town of Stockton, New York, is famous for nothing: No one was born there, no one died there, nothing of any historical import at all has ever happened there, which is why Solomon Kugel, like other urbanites fleeing their pasts and histories, decided to move his wife and young son there. To begin again. To start anew. But it isn't quite working out that way.

An excellent farce, if a little long
Revisado: 02-11-13
Would you consider the audio edition of Hope: A Tragedy to be better than the print version?
Yes I would because the author/reader made it humorous with inflections, etc. I read it for a book club and would not have read it otherwise, so the audio version allowed me to do so more easily/quickly.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Hope: A Tragedy?
The ending. The interactions between Kugel and his mother as well as the scene at the Realtor's office stuck with me. Also his mother's comments about the Armenian genocide as "contrasted" to the holocaust.
Which character – as performed by Shalom Auslander – was your favorite?
Kugel & his mother.
Any additional comments?
Others have said it all on audible & amazon reviews much better than I can. I will say in wanting to discuss the book right afterword, I read many of those reviews to help me process the book. There are some great ones out there. I wouldn't have read this book without it being assigned in my book club. But I am very glad I did. It is one that will stick with me. I do think Mr. Auslander could have accomplished the same poignant result with a shorter version of the book. However, in looking back, it's interesting to think about how the protagonist's neuroses grew & took hold.

Historia
Balram Halwai is a complicated man. Servant. Philosopher. Entrepreneur. Murderer. Balram tells us the terrible and transfixing story of how he came to be a success in life - having nothing but his own wits to help him along. Through Balram's eyes, we see India as we've never seen it before: the cockroaches and the call centers, the prostitutes and the worshippers, the water buffalo and, trapped in so many kinds of cages that escape is (almost) impossible, the white tiger.
With a charisma as undeniable as it is unexpected, Balram teaches us that religion doesn't create morality and money doesn't solve every problem.

Fascinating portraits
Revisado: 05-06-11
Not sure how to describe this book. Took me a while to get into it. Loved his perspective on writing to China's leader. An honest and gripping portrait of a "hard" life in India. Beautiful character portrayals and scenic descriptions. John Lee is by far one of my favorite readers! Worth it just to hear him again.

To five-year-old Jack, Room is the entire world. It is where he was born and grew up; it's where he lives with his Ma as they learn and read and eat and sleep and play. At night, his Ma shuts him safely in the wardrobe, where he is meant to be asleep when Old Nick visits. Room is home to Jack, but to Ma, it is the prison where Old Nick has held her captive for seven years. Through determination, ingenuity, and fierce motherly love, Ma has created a life for Jack. But she knows it's not enough...not for her or for him.

Worth exploring
Revisado: 05-06-11
I was intrigued but wanted more out of 2nd half of the book. In the end, not as wild as most people about the story - a bit far-fetched in my opinion. But I understand the essence of what she wanted us to think about - how we should all step back and try to see our lives from a different perspective to appreciate them more. And the social ramification of our everyday lives. I'm sure others have said much more eloquently. But I think she could have explored much more of her theme if she'd cut some from the beginning and delved more deeply and for longer on the "reentering."

It's easy to feel at home in Mitford. In these high, green hills, the air is pure, the village is charming, and the people are generally lovable. Yet Father Tim, the bachelor rector, wants something more. Enter a dog the size of a sofa who moves in and won't go away. Add an attractive neighbor who begins wearing a path through the hedge. Now, stir in a lovable but unloved boy, a mystifying jewel theft, and a secret that's 60 years old.

A great light yet heart-filled "read." Loved John McDonough's reading of it. Felt like I'd been living in Mitford with all those characters by the end. Didn't want it to end. Good thing there's others for me to delve into.
