I can't get any of the audio prompts to actually work. instead the story is interrupted with nonsense and then it continues regardless of choice. They should have provided a button UI

There's not much more to say about it. The narrator does the same Zap Brannigan voice for all characters and in all moods. Beyond that there's nothing novel about the story to make up for it.

Absolutely nothing happens. The story is a complete waste of time. At least in the Quarter Share books there's a backdrop of an interesting universe to casually explore while making coffee. In this case there's not even that.

Scott Aiello has turned this story into a farce. His characterizations are ridiculous, from his terrible posh lead to the meat-head grunts he gives for the marines. I can't take anything seriously and it ruined the book. I'm giving up less than an hour in. Read the print or ebook instead.

Amy Landon did an excellent job reading Forging Hephaestus and it's sequel but her cadence in A Memory Called Empire was flat and distracting. It's as if she's not paying attention to the words and it ruined the story. Pick up the ebook or print instead.

The book is obviously excellent with beautifully crafted prose, world building, moral introspection and brilliant questions explored. The book follows multiple points of view to achieve these aims. That fact is important and yet I didn't realize it for half the book because the narrator makes no vocal distinction. He mumbles and crunches his aged voice over complex foreign terms and people. He moves without energy or passion and it stays the book into a plodding morass.

Read this instead of listening. Audible, make a new recording with more dynamic narration or multiple readers.

The story sounds like it might have had some interesting elements, but the of choices in voices for the characters left me confused from the start. It soon became clear the reader wasn't paying attention to the text, just reciting the words. I'll try this in print.

The longer I listened the less I cared about the characters or the story. I abandoned the book with an hour remaining.

There wasn't much to book 6 of the Pillars of Reality that should surprise readers of the previous five books. There's plenty of rehash of the formations of the relationships we've seen building over the books. Also there's plenty of chances to stress over the side characters we've come to enjoy. Jack Campbell set himself up for a big battle in this story but despite the careful execution it felt cold. As events became more and more dire I didn't get the sense of real despair or real hope, just lip-service. It shouldn't be a surprise in a series that's all about surface tension, but that was a bit of a disappointment. Still, there's plenty of fun action to be had and I felt the series ended well.

I struggled to stay with the story for about six hours before I finally gave up. The wasn't really anything pushing things along, plot wise. I didn't care about the characters and other than a mysterious appearance by "The Beast" there wasn't much at stake. Boring.
