Historia
Mary Stewart, one of the great British storytellers of the 20th century, transports listeners to rural Northumberland for this tale of romance, ambition and deceit - a perfect fit for fans of Agatha Christie and Barbara Pym. Whitescar is a beautiful old house and farm situated in Roman Wall country. It will make a rich inheritance for its heirs, but in order to secure it, they enlist the help of a young woman named Mary who bears remarkable resemblance to missing Whitescar heiress Annabel Winslow. Their deception will spark a powder keg of ambition, obsession and long-dead love.

Dated and a bit overlong
Revisado: 06-21-20
I loved Mary Stewart's works when I was young. Listening now I see that her portrayal of women, at least in this novel is silly and ineffectual. Stewart makes quite a few uses of "well, she's a woman after all," to describe weak character, poor decision making and general stupid behavior.
I hadn't noticed this when I was young, but it's quite evident now that I'm 57.
The narrator tried, but didn't manage to convey urgency. Her voice was slow and melancholy throughout. The attempts at accents were distracting. Sometimes it's better for narrators not to try.

Tommy and Tuppence are at it again. This detective couple can never walk away from a mystery and these two later novels are no exception. By the Pricking of My Thumbs: When Tommy and Tuppence visit an elderly aunt in her gothic nursing home, they think nothing of her mistrust of the doctors; after all, Ada is a very difficult old lady. Postern of Fate: Tommy and Tuppence Beresford have just become the proud owners of an old house in an English village. Along with the property, they have inherited some worthless bric-a-brac, including a collection of antique books....

A comfortable listen
Revisado: 06-05-20
"By the Pricking of my Thumbs" is faster paced than the "Postern of Fate", which reads more like a country ramble and discussion of flowers, tea parties and memories of the past.
Both are enjoyable.

Clever and Fun
Revisado: 06-05-20
Although I wasn't certain about this novel at the beginning, because Eustacie is somewhat annoying, I kept with it and then understood how Georgette Heyer was telling her story.
What I always regret with the Heyer novels is that just when you are enjoying the characters the novel ends and you only have your imagination to rely on as to what became of them.

Superb!
Revisado: 04-02-20
One of the best decisions made for this audible version of Ben Kane's Eagles at War was to choose David Rintoul as narrator. Mr. Rintoul could make a nursery rhyme sound exciting. He's an absolute master of narration of this gritty novel. If you are a fan of Mr. Rintoul's narration then I highly recommend the horror stories he had narrated.
I am thoroughly enjoying the Eagles series by Mr. Kane and am on the second novel currently.

Historia
New York Times best-selling author Kim Stanley Robinson returns with a bold and brilliant vision of New York City in the next century. As the sea levels rose, every street became a canal. Every skyscraper an island. For the residents of one apartment building in Madison Square, however, New York in the year 2140 is far from a drowned city. There is the market trader, who finds opportunities where others find trouble. There is the detective, whose work will never disappear—along with the lawyers, of course.

Weak, clingy and insipid women
Revisado: 12-09-19
I did not like this at all. It was so difficult to listen to that I did not finish the third book. The women in these novels are characterless little fools who do nothing to improve themselves.

Splendid but....
Revisado: 10-27-19
Peter Noble is an excellent narrator and I've enjoyed his work through all three books of the series. I was a bit disappointed that in Brigantia that he did not continue his correct pronunciation of Latin as he did in the first two. It was so marvelous and refreshing to have characters saying names, military units and place names in true Latin pronunciation.
Perhaps people complained and he adjusted his pronunciation to fit, but I enjoyed the other.
This book needed an epilogue or a couple more chapters to even out the ending. It left listeners hanging and after getting to know the characters so well it was a disappointment. Perhaps there is to be another novel in the future?

Historia
When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early 40s, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it at first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

Complex and compelling
Revisado: 08-18-19
I agree with another reviewer of this book when they indicated J.K. Rowling is a genius. This book takes the listener through the lives of people connected by one man.
As you listen, the story winds itself into the revelation of characters with their strengths and flaws. It's not a joyful book, so please don't expect that.
Tom Hollander is an excellent narrator and brought the characters to life. Splendid.

There should have been more...
Revisado: 08-11-19
"Good build up to a whole lotta not much," as written by Tracy in a previous review, summed this novel up for me. It's certainly suspenseful. The characters make a lot of the silly horror story/film mistakes, such as doing something you KNOW is rather dumb and it's going to get you into trouble.
The ending was a fizzle. It certainly left the listener wanting more of an explanation.

Emily made me roll my eyes
Revisado: 08-11-19
I found the main character, Emily, to be self-absorbed and selfish. It particularly annoyed me that if someone died, or perhaps might die, Emily would immediately wonder what would become of HER. She had all sorts of people helping her out of situations and she never actually had to be on her own...ever.
These characters are annoying because if someone is going to claim they are on their own and independent, then they should at least put in the effort to make their own bread, for heavens' sake. I had hoped for more from this novel, because the idea was good, but it just didn't suit me as to how the novel played out. Everyone rescued silly Emily from situation after situation and she wasn't even likeable. She continued to put way too much emphasis on what class she was. High muckity muck. Blech.
