Cozy dark winter murder mystery
Revisado: 09-28-23
I've read this book twice now, in 2023 and back in 2016 and I really liked it both times. The heroes of the story are flawed and oh-so relatable. The constant train of tragedy that follows the protagonist Anna is at times a bit of a stretch to swallow but otherwise I felt all of the characters were really well fleshed-out with distinct personalities and I could see different parts of myself or other people in my life reflected in all of them (which lends itself to relatability and personal investment in the story). We have the constant moper, the overly cheery coworker, the overprotective cousin, the guy that just can't take a hint, the high strung nervous college student and server, the loud and obnoxious neighbors, the hanging-on-by-the-skin-of-his-teeth-police officer, etc.
I was worried this 'murder mystery' would be cheesy but Redling does a good job in using the crime as more of a supporting actor in the story and not the main character. I thought the pacing was good, and that it didn't drag on and would recommend this to anyone looking for a murder mystery on the more sarcastic and albeit cozier side (would recommend this for late fall/ winter season reads).
This story touches on the topics of mental health, domestic abuse and trauma and as they affect both children and adults.

"What did I just read" but in the BEST WAY
Revisado: 09-28-23
This was just as thrilling as the first time I read it in 2016 when it premiered. I don't want to say too much and ruin the experience.
Follow the story of Ben and his journey on "The Path." The hero's journey takes him to places where he questions his sanity, we question his sanity, and you are not sure what is real and what is not. Desperate to get back to his family, Ben is the main character in his own Odyssey.
What does it mean to live and what does it mean to survive, and for how long can the human spirit endure? I think at the heart of it, its a story of perspective and about understanding what value there is in appreciating what you have and that you "can always make something good."
The twist at the end was perfect and I'm so glad the author ended it the way he did.

Total Dude Humor is the best way
Revisado: 09-28-23
This is a total 'dude humor' type of book and I love it. It's not meant to be taken super seriously, like Gossip Girl isn't meant to be taken seriously but to be entertained.
Here we follow the Talbots as they flee Little Turtle Complex from book 1 and head North to collect more family. Tufo does an really good job of over dramatizing the characters which actually works really well, as it does on a stage performance. There are many many characters and this type of dramatization helps the reader have a clear vision of each player without getting confused or forgetting who is who.
Excited to continue re-reading the series

The twists got me
Revisado: 09-21-23
Very fun read. I love stories where so many strangers' lives are intertwined without them knowing. This doesn't necessarily have a happy ending but I think that's part of why it's such a good story, a realistic ending for a seemingly unrealistic series of events spanning 20 years (over the course of a week).
I felt very connected to Rachel, trying to move on (unsuccessfully) to move on from tragedy until it eventually drives her to do the most regrettable thing, making her that which she hates the most.
I felt very connected to Cecelia, a woman just trying to keep everything together and take care of her family financially, emotionally, and materially (somehow actually being able to do it, the quintessential 'supermom').
I felt very connected to Tess, a woman who I see myself the most in. I think had I been in the very same situation I would have acted the exact reaction and acted the exact same way (from the beginning to the end). A woman committed to her marriage vows, even in the worse of it.
Felicity... all I can say is that delusion is powerful.
This is my second go around with this book and loved it as much as the first time. Would recommend.

Sam and Clementine have a wonderful, albeit, busy life: they have two little girls, Sam has just started a new dream job, and Clementine, a cellist, is busy preparing for the audition of a lifetime. If there’s anything they can count on, it’s each other. Clementine and Erika are each other’s oldest friends. A single look between them can convey an entire conversation. But theirs is a complicated relationship, so when Erika mentions a last minute invitation to a barbecue with her neighbors, Tiffany and Vid, Clementine and Sam don’t hesitate.

What adult relationships are actually like
Revisado: 09-21-23
I think one of my favorite things about Moriarty's work is the contrast among the cast of characters. She sets them up to be each other's foils so well (some might consider it to be too obvious but simplicity doesn't speak to a lack of quality, certainly). I enjoyed the different levels that each character added to the story, their psychology, and their baggage. The characters are deeply affected by their past and very clearly affect the choices they make which makes for a very interesting and complex narrative.
My main issue with this particular work was the general organization. I think if the organization had been better I would have given it a 5 star, but it was enough of an issue for me that I had a hard time following up until the 'the night of the barbecue.'
This is a re-read for me, and on the re-read, it is still very good. I thought I wouldn't enjoy it as much but I was wrong (probably because I only remembered the first two acts and totally blanked on the third act!).
Finally, I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Caroline Lee and I cannot stop singing her praises. I actually found Moriarty because I listened to something else by Lee and decided that I needed to consume her work. I would highly recommend her work to others.

Too many characters not worth following
Revisado: 09-21-23
The main issue I had was that this book suffered from too many characters. There are three triplets, with three seperate stories, and I didn't really feel invested in them til about the 50% mark which made it very difficult to keep them straight (not helped with some of the mixed media storytelling). When you're invested in the story and characters they leave an impression but that didn't happen for me till about half way through. I did like that Moriarty didn't give us a happily ever after where everybody makes nice and apologizes, and in that way it felt very real. I would not re read and probably would not recommend it The first half I would have rated 2.5 but the second was a 3.5, but because I can't recommend it to someone else to read from the overall experience, I leave it at a 2 ⭐
For a reference I love Moriarity's work and this was a bit of a shock for me.

This is the story of Michael Talbot, his family, and his friends: a band of ordinary people trying to get by in extraordinary times. When disaster strikes, Mike, a self-proclaimed survivalist, does his best to ensure the safety and security of those he cares for. Book one of the Zombie Fallout Trilogy follows our lead character at his self-deprecating, sarcastic best. What he encounters along the way leads him down a long dark road, always skirting the edge of insanity.

Funny, entertaining, and thrilling
Revisado: 09-21-23
You follow the Talbot family at the outbreak of the zombie apocalypses as they try to survive in Colorado. I feel Tufo relies a lot on stereotypes of women to write his female characters. Its not the worst I've seen from other male authors and primarily keeps the women in this story from being very fleshed out and relatable. Aside from this characterization issue though, this is a very interesting, fast paced, and funny story (worthy of a re-read even). I felt like I could see my own father in Mike Talbot and it really made me become attached to him, his family, his friends, and pets. I also starting sobbing around the 85% mark.
This edition that I am reviewing (Audible Audio from 2017) has a great performance by Sean Runnette who really characterizes Mike and his fellow players in this story, you forget it is just one person speaking, which is a very good sign.

I was rooting for the protagonist's' demise...
Revisado: 05-11-23
Okay... there are so many thoughts in my head about this one.
The plot itself was good and this should have been a 4-star read, however, the execution is what really let this novel down. Now, it might be that my experience is unique to the audiobook as I do feel that both the production quality (the constant sound of white-noise-silence in the background), as well as the production and performance choices, made this very difficult to get through.
Now, there were plenty of other structural issues with this book not related to the audio experience. For one, you go about thinking "Oh scenario X is probably what happened" and then the twist happens, "Scenario Y." Then the author adds a short storyline at the end where scenario X happens anyways! This really cheapens and HURTS the story so much and cheapens the twist.
And speaking of the twist, the bones were there to make the twist super shocking and crazy, but the pacing was wrong and there was not enough tension built for it to have OOMPH. Now the pacing might have been a byproduct of the narrator's performance, but it was the experience I had nonetheless. When you have an audiobook and you're constantly checking to see if you're almost done, that's a bad sign. This story was told over 108 chapters, but it should have been done in at most 60-70. I think more judicious editing would have addressed the pacing and tension issues mentioned.
Further, the story is told through a mix of mostly 2nd-person narration with a sprinkling of 1st-person perspective changes. Which, if you don't like the narrator, causes issues with connecting and investing in the story (which is what happened) and I actually started rooting for the perpetrator to get the narrator! You should not be rooting against your protagonist, as a general rule.
I tried to listen to this in 2017 and DNF'd but I finally got through it and it really felt like a CHORE.
