Historia
General Stonewall Jackson was like no one anyone had ever seen. In April of 1862 he was merely another Confederate general with only a single battle credential in an army fighting in what seemed to be a losing cause. By middle June he had engineered perhaps the greatest military campaign in American history and was one of the most famous men in the Western World. He had given the Confederate cause what it had recently lacked: hope.

Millennia ago, a magical race called the Aesir found a new home on a distant world. Attracted to the cold during an ice age, they hibernated for hundreds of years at a time. With each awakening, however, they saw their world changed by ever-evolving mortals encroaching on their territory and way of life. Two civilizations with opposing magic, poised to clash over and over. Now, the Aesir are awakening to wage a new war—this time to exterminate their enemy once and for all.

Interesting world. Lots of romance. Bad narrator.
Revisado: 02-06-25
The Audible book was grating and disappointing. The narrator mispronounces many, many words-valise, dour, etc I will read the next in the series but I want more adventure and less romance.

Hello to you, I am with news. I have a new book: I Haven’t Been Entirely Honest With You. I know – what an intriguing title! Basically, I have had an unexpectedly difficult decade – there have been surprising joys but also deep revelations and challenging lows. I shall be honest about those, because what I discovered in the difficult times were my, what I call, treasures.

I will listen to this again because 1) she is hilarious 2) she is brave to share her health struggles and 3) to a degree, the journey she describes is our own toward good mental health and balance. I loved this book!

Historia
Henry V reigned over England for only nine years and four months and died at the age of just thirty-five, but he looms over the landscape of the late Middle Ages and beyond. The victor of Agincourt, he is remembered as the acme of kingship, a model to be closely imitated by his successors. William Shakespeare deployed Henry V as a study in youthful folly redirected to sober statesmanship. For one modern medievalist, Henry was, quite simply, “the greatest man who ever ruled England.”

Disappointed
Revisado: 01-09-24
I love his “The Last Days of the Incas” so much. This one was not nearly as good. He writes with bias and subjectivity instead of maintaining an objective tone. His appreciation for Che Guevara and Evo Morales was particularly not easy to stomach, especially since Evo showed his true colors after this book’s publication when he knowingly tried to manipulate Bolivian votes to secure a fourth term. We get it, MacQuarrie, climate change is important to you. After your long chapter on Galápagos Islands and Darwin, did we really need more Darwin in the last chapter? I loved the Escobar and Shining Path chapters, but that’s about it. I’d bet MacQuarrie has a Che t-shirt.

Historia

Historia
For millennia the location of the Nile River’s headwaters was shrouded in mystery. In the 19th century, there was a frenzy of interest in ancient Egypt. At the same time, European powers sent off waves of explorations intended to map the unknown corners of the globe—and extend their colonial empires.
