Historia
Steve Wheeler is enjoying retired life. He still does the odd bit of investigation work, but he prefers his familiar routines: the pub quiz, his favorite bench, his cat waiting for him at home. His days of adventure are over. Adrenaline is daughter-in-law Amy’s job now. Amy Wheeler thinks adrenaline is good for the soul. Working in private security, every day is dangerous. She’s currently on a remote island protecting mega-bestselling author Rosie D’Antonio, until a dead body and a bag of money mean trouble in paradise. So she sends an SOS to the only person she trusts . . .

Engaging, endearing, a total joy to read!

The characters were all lovable in their very different ways. It was fun to read with an excellent thrilling plot and a great ending. Sit back and relax; you’re in good hands with author Richard Osman and narrator Nicola Walker!

Outstanding!!
Revisado: 01-13-25
Wonderful, delightful G. Heyer! The story was pleasing and exciting. The dialogue, the character development, the intricate and yet easily followed plot, and the HE all contributed to a great reading experience. The narrator made a few minor stumbles (covert instead of cavort; sang “froyd” instead of froid which is pronounced more like “fwah” in French). Otherwise the narration was brilliant with each character having an easily recognizable voice. Highly recommend!

In Normandy, the icy rage of Simon the Coldheart must melt - or quench Lady Margaret, spitfire of Belremy.

Was Georgette Heyer an adult when she wrote this?
Revisado: 10-22-24
So silly and immature. I can’t believe Heyer wrote this or ever would have wanted it published! She must be rolling in her grave with embarrassment. I am her biggest fan so I read the whole dumb book but I guess even great writers have their failures. I seriously think she must have been 13 or younger when she wrote this.

Historia
Harry Hole is not in a good place. Rakel - the only woman he's ever loved - has ended it with him, permanently. He's been given a chance for a new start with the Oslo Police, but it's in the cold case office. What he really wants is to be investigating cases he suspects have ties to Svein Finne, the serial rapist and murderer who Harry helped put behind bars. And now, Finne is free after a decade-plus in prison. When Harry wakes up the morning after a drunken night with blood that's clearly not his own on his hands, it's only the very beginning of what will be a waking nightmare.

Brilliant plot
Revisado: 08-16-24
Smart dialog, ingenious plotting, tons of suspense and surprises, realistic and fascinating characters, and fortunately, not as much graphic torture and violence as I feared. Just fantastic.

Not what I expected - much better. This was a total delight from start to finish, especially the evolving relationships with the children who were portrayed in a way that was both realistic and endearing. I think it’ must be difficult to write dialogue between children and it was very well done. I fell in love with all the characters really - I thoroughly enjoyed this and highly recommend it!

Historia
Robert Rothmore, Earl of Rockford, thinks Alissa Henning is simply delightful-exactly the kind of woman who'd make the perfect mother for his sons. But Alissa swore she'd spend the rest of her life scraping pennies together rather than wed the insufferable earl and become a glorified governess. Still, she couldn't very well let her own children starve - and there was no doubt that Rockford would give them all a good life. So, she reluctantly accepts his offer...but there's more to a good life than what's in one's pockets.

Delightful!
Revisado: 08-26-22
I really enjoyed this story, especially the strong yet vulnerable female lead, the charming children, the puppies, the pig, and all the secondary characters. It was interesting to see the male lead evolve and finally let go of his rigid and wrong-headed determination to have only transactional relationships rather than emotional connections with the people in his life. Barbara Metzger is a writer I admire enormously; almost as much as I admire Georgette Heyer. She trusts in the intelligence of her readers. I hadn’t expected the book to be so funny and yet, it was often LOL funny. That is due, in large part, to the narrator, who is superb. Ironically, I initially hated her voice so much I almost didn’t get this book. But as it happened, she was the perfect narrator. She was somehow able to convey the humor of situations just with her tone of voice and her commitment to the drama. She was outstanding at portraying the sarcasm, outrage, pigheadedness, anxiety, patience, love, or whatever else was called for in the moment. I became a true fan. I don’t always love Metzger’s romances but this one was just fun from start to finish. This is not to say there were no evil characters, hardships, losses, or traumas. But there was so much else that the bad stuff never became too dominant or oppressive.

Historia
London banking heiress Hattie Greenfield wanted just three things in life: acclaim as an artist, a noble cause, marriage to a young lord who puts the gentle in gentleman. Why, then, does this Oxford scholar find herself at the altar with the darkly attractive financier Lucian Blackstone, whose murky past and ruthless business practices strike fear into the hearts of Britain's peerage? Trust Hattie to take an invigorating little adventure too far. Now she's stuck with a churlish Scot who just might be the end of her ambitions...

Revisado: 09-11-21
This is the first time I haven’t had to set aside either my feminism or my politics to enjoy a romance novel. In fact both my feminism and my politics benefited and were strengthened by reading this. And it was a great romance with lots of well-written steamy scenes to enjoy. I wish I could give it 100 stars! It’s way better than many of the other books I’ve given 5 stars to. Highly, enthusiastically recommend! Oh, and the narration was great. No whines tones for women. Great accents across nationalities and classes. First rate.

Revisado: 08-10-21
Perfect romance novel. Great plot, smart dialogue, humor, interesting history, likeable characters (which is difficult to pull off when pitting a feminist against a politically powerful Tory Duke), great secondary characters (and a cat!), perfect amount of steam (not too intrusive), totally innovative (and I’ve probably read tens of thousands of romance novels in my life). I really couldn’t stop listening to this. Georgette Heyer is still the greatest of all but Evie Dunmore is a worthy successor - like Georgette Heyer with steam! And the narrator was fantastic. I always knew who was speaking and there wasn’t a single hitch. I can’t wait to read the second, I’ve already preordered the third, and will probably re-read this one a few times. I hope the next one includes more animals and children. And I hope the author is happy and healthy and cranks them out one after another for years to come!

Historia
The last time Olivia Martingale saw Menwin it was in Brussels on the eve of Waterloo. She had loved him then, but her love was not returned. Instead she yielded to the insistent Lord John Temperer, married him, and was left a widow. With the war at last over, visiting John’s family seemed like a good idea. But John’s brother the Duke disliked her; John’s mother wanted to match-make for her… and into the middle of all this walked Menwin, filling the room with his presence. Olivia felt the old attraction rising again - until Menwin looked right through her as if she was not even worth noticing.

Well-written enjoyable love story. It wasn’t ruined by the narrator but her frequent mistakes in pronunciation and syntax were annoying and occasionally ludicrous.
