Historia
The emperor Justinian reunified Rome's fractured empire by defeating the Goths and Vandals. At his capital in Constantinople, he built the world's most beautiful building, married the most powerful empress, and wrote the empire's most enduring legal code, seemingly restoring Rome's fortunes for the next five hundred years. Then, in the summer of 542, he encountered a flea. The ensuing outbreak of bubonic plague killed 5,000 people a day in Constantinople and nearly killed Justinian himself.

meandering but a joy
Revisado: 11-02-24
The book covers more topics than just Roman history and the detail in the rat, flea and the bacteria was great. Learned more about the bubonic plague from this book than from the great mortality and other books that cover the 14th century Black Death

Historia
In this Pulitzer Prize - winning biography, Barbara Tuchman explores American relations with China through the experiences of one of our men on the ground. In the cantankerous but level-headed "Vinegar Joe", Tuchman found a subject who allowed her to perform, in the words of the National Review, "one of the historian's most envied magic acts: conjoining a fine biography of a man with a fascinating epic story."

Learned more about China than I thought
Revisado: 02-04-24
Though the narrator’s impersonation of Stilwell’s voice was a bit silly and tiresome, overall the book was very enlightening. I found myself feeling sad in the end for Stilwell and all of his wasted potential. Chinese really do not think the way westerners do and Stilwell ‘s whole campaign was doomed from the start in my opinion.
Chang Kai Shek reminds me of modern day Xi Jinping where he is completely insulated from reality and just as incompetent of a leader. History repeating itself again.

Historia
History remembers Attila, the leader of the Huns, as the Romans perceived him: a savage barbarian brutally inflicting terror on whoever crossed his path. Following Attila and the Huns from the steppes of Kazakhstan to the court of Constantinople, Christopher Kelly portrays Attila in a compelling new light, uncovering an unlikely marriage proposal, a long-standing relationship with a treacherous Roman general, and a thwarted assassination plot.

Demystifying Attila
Revisado: 12-22-23
Much like Barry Strauss’s “The Trojan War”, there is limited historical record to truly do justice to the man Attila. Regardless I found the book to be eye opening with the information available and Attila as the “big bad” is more myth and propaganda than rooted in fact. I think the author said it best calling the Hunnic empire parasitic and how the author highlighted the problems with the sprawling Roman Empire was also an interesting correlation.

Historia
Towards the middle of the third century BC, the Hellenistic kingdoms were near their peak. In terms of population, economy, and military power, each was vastly superior to Rome, not to mention in fields such as medicine, architecture, science, philosophy, and literature. But over the next two and a half centuries, Rome would eventually conquer these kingdoms while adopting so much of Hellenistic culture that the resultant hybrid is known as "Graeco-Roman." In Greece Against Rome, Philip Matyszak relates this epic tale from the Hellenistic perspective.

Definitely Philip Matyszak is now one of my favorite authors. I really enjoyed this story and his snark and humor throughout.
Philip if you are reading this please release an audiobook version for your rise of Hellenism book. I would really like to listen to that to get a complete picture of Hellenism.

Historia
The Trojan War is the most famous conflict in history, the subject of Homer's Iliad, one of the cornerstones of Western literature. Although many listeners know that this literary masterwork is based on actual events, there is disagreement about how much of Homer's tale is true. Drawing on recent archaeological research, historian and classicist Barry Strauss explains what really happened in Troy more than 3,000 years ago. For many years it was thought that Troy was an insignificant place that never had a chance against the Greek warriors who laid siege and overwhelmed the city.

Probably as good as it gets with limited evidence
Revisado: 05-07-23
The book relied heavily on Homer and it did its best to add evidence to Homer’s story but like Spartacus’s revolt, a lot is still unknown. The author did an admirable job but it was not his best work due to the subject.

Historia
The First World War created the modern world. A conflict of unprecedented ferocity, it abruptly ended the relative peace and prosperity of the Victorian era, unleashing such demons of the 20th century as mechanized warfare and mass death. It also helped to usher in the ideas that have shaped our times - modernism in the arts, new approaches to psychology and medicine, radical thoughts about economics and society - and in so doing shattered the faith in rationalism and liberalism that had prevailed in Europe since the Enlightenment.

Overall the book was pretty good for someone who knows very little about world war 1. I would have preferred some more commentary by the author at the end but overall it was good.

Historia
More than 2,000 years ago one of the greatest military leaders in history almost destroyed Rome. Hannibal, a daring African general from the city of Carthage, led an army of warriors and battle elephants over the snowy Alps to invade the very heart of Rome's growing empire. But what kind of person would dare to face the most relentless imperial power of the ancient world? How could Hannibal, consistently outnumbered and always deep in enemy territory, win battle after battle until he held the very fate of Rome within his grasp?

I enjoyed the authors book on Alexander so I had been anticipating this one and I was pleased with it as well. I was not a huge fan of the narrator voice as it sounded a bit computer generated but it was tolerable.

Historia
For 18 years, Bruce Bueno de Mesquita and Alastair Smith have been revolutionizing the study of politics by turning conventional wisdom on its head. They start from a single assertion: Leaders do whatever keeps them in power. They don't care about the "national interest" - or even their subjects - unless they have to. This clever and accessible book shows that the difference between tyrants and democrats is just a convenient fiction.

Fantastic book
Revisado: 07-31-19
This was probably one of the best books I’ve ever read/listened to. It really explains the nagging question I’ve always had about why there are so many dictators around the world. I could never understand why people don’t rise up and democratize and now I get it.
Such a great book. Definitely worth a second listen.

More about defining the problems than the solutions
Revisado: 07-16-19
This book probably merits another listen but overall I found it was more geared for laying out the problems and why rather than the solutions. The only solutions I remember the book advocating for were basically to introduce a universal income and being more generous.

Microsoft stack looking at Big Data
Revisado: 01-30-19
This was a great book about the Lambda architecture. I’m coming from a Microsoft stack (sql server etc.) background and I found this a great explanation of an alternative way to store, compute and serve the data without all the traditional Sql Server tooling.
Definitely got me excited to explore alternate data pipeline architectures outside of the Microsoft world.
