I really enjoyed the beginning and ending of this book. It was a good tale, with likable characters, and good humor. The middle of the book felt like a series of quests from Star Wars Galaxies, or Star Wars The Old Republic, and I don't mean that negatively--not exactly. It felt like either there was one or two quests too many, or that the quests were too similar. That comment is probably rooted in the idea that the main character touches items, and then has force flashes... he remembers what the item saw, or lived through (experienced). This was a fun effect, for a while, but grew a little tiresome sometimes (not much).

All in all, a really good book that kept pulling me back in. I liked the writing, and the characters. If felt very Star Wars, as it should, I of course, I love that :)

There's a lot to like about Einstein's Compass. The beginning threw me off a bit as there is quite a bit of mythos/religion mixed into the plot, which, for some reason, I didn't anticipate.

Fortunately, I like those things.

All in all, a good story line, with a ton of detail and information and spin on the gods and history. Worth a listen, for sure!

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I thought that I had put a review up for this a while ago, but apparently, I hadn't (Sorry!). There are tons of positive reviews out there (they're all correct) so I won't belabor the point. This book is great fun (and I'm saying that about a horror book.) The narrations are well done, and the humor is sardonic and accessible. Just lots of fun.

Geoff has done it again with oodles of creativity, and tons of horrific humor. Check it out. As an aside, I always come out of a Geoff Sturtevant book having learned a new phrase, or idiom I'd never heard of. :)

I'd give Scythe 4 gleanings out of 5.

This is a fun book filled with well-rounded characters, an engaging plot, and a very interesting world draped in religious overtones with hints of sci-fi. For me, this amounted to a curious mix of environment and feeling that the author, Neal Shusterman, pulls off well.

Scythe is set in a distant future but feels like its set in the near future in some ways. Countries are organized and named a bit differently, but they still feel familiar. America is called midmerica, for example, and you'd recognize many of the same things we do today, like pool parties. But there are bigger things that are quite a bit different from our world today. Civilization is more, well, "civilized." There is no real crime, and, ironically, everyone has agreed to let the Scythes, modern-day grim reapers, stalk the world and "glean" people in order to keep the population totals under control. The book explores how people hold the honorable Scythes on a pedestal and the various human traits that surface in an environment with those dynamics. Very interesting stuff.

Technology has also evolved. The cloud *(Internet and data accessible from anywhere) has become the Thunderhead, a benevolent overseeing Skynet type that is in the background of the story until... it's not.

Nanites have been made available to everyone to help them heal, or deal with the pain that would have been experienced in the "age of man." Society can even leverage the nanites to shape or reshape their bodies to their liking.

This makes the whole notion of killing almost moot. If someone dies, they are "deadish," and can be revived at a healing center. Only when someone is gleaned (or burned) are they truly gone, and beyond help.

In short, the plot revolves around two children that are selected to become Scythe apprentices, both under one single honorable Scythe—an unprecedented move. Their worlds are turned upside down as they come together only to get torn apart by warring factions and belief systems within the Scythe conclave.

What results is a fantastic adventure that easily held my attention, and drug me along for the wonderful ride.

There's a ton I could say about this book, but let's start with that... it's fantastic. I tend to bounce between 3-5 books at any given time, gravitating to the book that met my mood in a given day, but this one made me monogamous for a time.

The book is part Ender's Game, part Last Starfighter, and Top Gun, and YA, and awesome.
The main character, Spensa, is the daughter of a great fighter pilot, call sign: Chaser, that we meet briefly at the beginning of the book. We like this man immediately as he seems to be a loving father with a special relationship with his daughter. Then, we learn a twist about his past that casts doubt on what we know, and colors Spensa's family reputation, and her chances to follow in his footsteps.

What ensues is a wonderful adventure. We follow Spensa as she fights her way into flight school and does all she can to uncover the mystery shrouding her father's last days.

The characters are rich (even M Bot), the twists are fun, and the book reads easy and engages the reader.

This book had me hooked from the get-go. The writing was great, and engaging, and the narration was fantastic. (This is the second book I've heard from Nigel Peever, and I think I'll look for more of his work. He does a great job.)

Full of magic, and great storytelling.

First of all, I have to say how much I like the narrator. you might wonder how you make it through a sports book with stats and such, but when the narrator is easy to listen to, it makes all the difference.

I jumped at the chance to listen to a book about the greatest point guard ever. I loved the stories, history, and background leading to the rise of John Stockton.

if you're a fan, check this out. I learned some things, for sure.

This book read /sounded like a legend passed down from generation to generation. I liked that. The story was good, and had all the fantastic elements you could want. There was intrigue, deception, and betrayal. It was a little slow in parts, but overall, I enjoyed it. I liked the narrator less than the story, but she was fine. 3.5 stars

Any additional comments?

This is my son's review:

It was very detailed, and he used good words. The story had a good theme: two kids being adopted by shape shifters and they went to go save the kingdom Cardonin. The characters were great.

I liked the cliffhanger at the end.
