Love, envy, power and paranoia
Revisado: 02-29-24
What makes people destroy themselves and eachother, fear. Fear of not getting something they want or loosing something they treasure.
The future President Snow is a childhood survivor of the war that started the Hunger Games. He was never allowed the luxury of idealism found in children of the socially elite.
This prequel takes you through the journey of trading the optimistim of youth for the hard reality of survival through ambition and advancement. We watch as little by little Snow's scruples fall way like leave on an autumn tree.

Cleaning up the mess
Revisado: 02-29-24
A candid look at being a part of the machinery that the Hefner Playboy brand protected. The trap of trading looks and youth for entry into a would that gives as much as it takes.
It's great that Mrs. Hefner was able to deprogram herself and take back her life. She was instrumental at destroying many harmful tapes and pictures that remained a threat to visitors of the bedroom.
Not all men that subscribed to Playboy and enjoyed the publication went down the dark road of turning women's sexual liberation against them. My father enjoyed Playboy and was inspired by it's politically progressive views. Somewhere in the 80s he became disappointed in the quality and feel of the publication as they tried to compete with the Hustler and Penthouse. Somehow my day picked up on the change in attitude towards women that was the reality at the Playboy Mansion.
I remember discussing a spread on Girls of the Ivy League, with my father, that had resulted in the expulsion of the women involved. I asked my father if he would be upset or embarrassed if I had posed for Playboy. My dad told me he wouldn't be ashamed but hoped that I wouldn't take such a life altering action for so little money. He told me the girls in the Ivy League spread only got $1000 and by getting expelled had hurt their future. He said it wasn't fair to the women while Playboy profited all the more from their scandal.

Historia
In the tradition of Antonia Fraser and Alison Weir, prize-winning historian Helen Castor delivers a compelling, eye-opening examination of women and power in England, witnessed through the lives of six women who exercised power against all odds - and one who never got the chance. Exploring the narratives of the Empress Matilda, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Isabella of France, Margaret of Anjou, and other "she-wolves," as well as that of the Nine Days' Queen, Lady Jane Grey, Castor invokes a magisterial discussion of how much - and how little - has changed through the centuries.

More than dry facts
Revisado: 07-14-23
I was intrigued by the authors comparison of the strategies, socal/cultural influence and challenges each of these women faced. Deepened my understanding of why each of these queens made the decisions and sacrifices they did. All women ahead of their time but limited by the society they operated in. Elizabeth I played the game the best but at a great personal cost.

Revisado: 06-06-23
Steven King can make any situation a potential horror story. I read alot of his books but had passed over this one. I enjoyed the movie with a friend and he told me I needed to get the full story by reading the book. He was right and as always Steven King has added to my neurotic fears

If ghosts could speak
Revisado: 06-06-23
Very entertaining historic fiction. Well researched and believable character. Nero as many historic figures was slandered and vilified by leaders that followed him. The author shows how the rumors and slander could have evolved. The victors write the history but not all primary sources are written by the victors. There is a wonderful chapter devoted to the actual history.

Sometimes life is a Beach
Revisado: 02-25-21
Stephen King has incorporated a real life horror with the supernatural. What does it mean when your body turns against you? The transformation is frightening and enlightening all at once. However, transformation can open doors.
Engrossing tale with a good dose of life mixed in with the supernatural and the horrific.

Historia
In Erotic Exchanges, Nina Kushner reveals the complex world of elite prostitution in 18th-century Paris by focusing on the professional mistresses who dominated it. In this demimonde, these dames entretenues exchanged sex, company, and sometimes even love for being "kept". Most of these women entered the profession unwillingly, either because they were desperate and could find no other means of support or because they were sold by family members to brothels or to particular men.

A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of very curious photographs. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets 16-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

Story of fanciful imagination good for all ages.
Revisado: 07-21-16
The tale of another world that exsists alongside and within the ordinary. Similar to the Harry Potter books but the children have talents that set them apart. Slight violence but nothing worse than other young adult books. Entertaining and interesting with enough substance to make you want to know what happens next. I like the time travel element.
