Far too much emphasis on the pilot's rather puerile attempts to win the heart and mind of another man's girl. Not enough hog hollering.

Great handling of a complex and difficult subject

The author does a commendable job of sorting through the sparse and contradictory historical documents concerning Alfred and Wessex. This is a complex and difficult task requiring quite a bit of scholarly supposition and discussion of the historical information available. The physical locations discussed are often fairly obscure and subject to dispute. It would be helpful for readers not extremely familiar with the geography of Britain to keep an atlas or two handy. The narrator does a commendable job enlivened by entertaining interpretations of regional accents.

The book seems to consist of disjointed collection of long quotes from other books and repeated rambling facts sometimes concerning submarines. It reads more like a very, very rough draft than a complete book. It might be of interest to someone with only a basic knowledge of submarine operations or better still, none at all.

These are top notch ripping Viking yarns. Nothing fantastical or magical, No elaborate epic battles or unbelievable heroics. Just stories about the normal type of Viking skull bashing, damsel wooing, treasure stealing, and revenge taking activities being perpetrated around vast areas of the ancient world. The translation and narration are both extremely well done.

The swelling patriotic music at the end of each chapter is an unwelcome addition to an extraneously detailed telling of not particularly interesting stories.

This book appears to have two protagonists and is presented in first person by both. Unfortunately it's almost impossible to distinguish when there is a switch from the personal narrative of one protagonist to the other. The protagonists are both young males on a star ship who operate in the same environment with the same supporting characters at the same time. I assume the chapter tiles of the physical book are marked as to which protagonist is featured but the performer of the book doesn't read any chapter titles. This results in a confusing, disjointed and jerky experience. I am a great fan of Mr. Drake's work and think it is a shame that the performance of what might have been another great book is so damaged by the mere omission of chapter headings.

What would have made Our Oriental Heritage better?

The book is fine as it stands as a reflection of the mindset of early Twentieth Century Western scholarship. One must keep in mind that this is not a modern work.

If you’ve listened to books by Will Durant before, how does this one compare?

I have listened to 'The Life of Ancient Greece' and found that work to be much more accessible. Both books are dated in style and content; but of course the do date from the early part of the Twentieth Century so must be viewed in that chronological context.

How could the performance have been better?

A different narrator would have been helpful. This narration is rather ponderous and monotonous.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The book is an interesting picture of the inherent prejudices and inaccurate perceptions early Twentieth Century Western scholars regarding the history and development of human society.

It does contain a wealth of information; but many of the suppositions derived from this information would now be considered 'quaint' at best, 'racist' at worst. It is most valuable as a reflection of how earlier scholars viewed and presented the history of civilization
