I don’t like books with toxic relationships in it. It was over for me the moment the love interest expressed how he thought it unacceptable that she’d rather meet her friends than go on a date with him. He had the audacity to say, “After what happened (i.e. sex) last night?” What the heck?

Oh and the writing is frustrating. There are plenty of ways to narrate scenes other than using a multitude of adjectives and verbs connected by “and.” Also, you don’t need to overly describe every. Single. Thing!

I wish the narrator had the accent down. Having listened to A Princess Theory before this, I couldn’t help but imagine Tav as African like Thabiso. It was sort of distracting... like a lot of other elements in the book were. There was just too much. Chemistry was a bit underwhelming too. I enjoyed it to a degree but not as much as the first book.

Am I too old for middle grade stories? For a second I thought I would have rated this higher if I were younger but then again I was far more pretentious when I was about 9 or 10. I fancied YA books that I couldn't really relate to because I was too much in a hurry to grow up. Now that I'm in my twenties, I'm much more open to all genres in whatever age bracket. This is why Wishes and Wellingtons is making me question myself. Everyone who's listened to it seemed to enjoy it a great deal. Except for me.

It's not that it's a bad story. The premise is promising. I just find the protagonist annoying. Have I been reading middle grade books with unrealistically mature characters? I don't believe so. They made plenty of bad decisions here and there but they weren't petulant. I really didn't like the lead in this one. Decisions, actions, thoughts... I couldn't believe I was listening to a book about a 13 year old girl. She sounded way younger than that. At some point I cheered for the adults who acted like villains towards her because on some level I felt like she deserved it.

"Because you're being childish!"
"Ugh you child."
"Ohhhhh shut the f*ck up." (this is harsh but I was already irritated at this point)

...were some of the things I repeatedly said aloud while listening to the book in my car. She was THAT bad for me. I just couldn't stand her. I actually found her friends and sister far more interesting and tolerable.

I was ready to mark this as DNF but I read one review that said the ending was heartwarming. I had to see for myself so I skipped a couple of hours only to find that it was underwhelming. I realized I was far too uninterested to find it redeeming in any way.

It wasn't all terrible. Just okay. Definitely not for me. The narrator was great though so gotta give props for that.

It's not so much as the writing is bad. The title, subtitle and short audiobook description didn't seem to represent what the book really is about: the author's experience and growth as a writer. In a way, it's a feminist book because the author shares her experience in the geek realm of writing and how it's often difficult for women to thrive. I just don't think it should be labeled AS a feminist book. It's more of a book for writers. Get my drift?

I'm not done with the audiobook as I write this review but I can't see myself enjoying this. The narration is also something I can't seem to enjoy. There's something about the narrator's tone and pronunciation that's not engaging for me. She sounds almost angry. And the overly pronounced words is a bit distracting. I wonder if I'd enjoy this more as a physical book.

Others might find this more interesting, especially writers. It's not for me.

(Note: this is barely a book review, more like a comparison of the book vs. the Netflix series.)

After finishing the Netflix series, I quickly downloaded the audiobook version of the book on Audible to compare. This is the first time I actually like both versions despite all the revisions.

Joe sounded more psychotic in the book and I love it. He’s an unreliable narrator. And I love how Fontana narrated. He truly sounded mad — way different from Badgley’s sweetness (which I think confused viewers hence the disturbing support for Joe). Beck is a clearly terrible person. Peach isn’t as annoying but maybe it was Shay Mitchell’s portrayal that made me despise her character.

Both versions made me question how much of my life I share online.

I like the book’s ending more because it felt like the culmination of Joe’s psychotic rage. Same ending, but totally different roads getting there.

All in all, You makes for a great thriller. It’s crazy and twisted, but ultimately entertaining.

I'm not sure if it's the audiobook narration but 3/4 of the book felt VERY dragging. I only got interested when the trial began.

It lays out the concepts of Taoism in a simple yet charming way - by using Winnie the Pooh and his friends as examples. It's a quick read (or in my case, listen) that held my attention from start to finish. I wonder though if it was only because of the narration. If I sat down and read it cover to cover, would it have the same lasting impression? Or would it seem as insightful if I came across this book under different circumstances? Whatever the case, I enjoyed this book thoroughly because it offered a refreshing break to the usual genres that I frequently pick up. I think it's a good title to have in anyone's shelf.

Highly entertaining. Not only did it effectively make me laugh, it also gave me a deeper insight into things like life, family, career - as told by Kevin Hart. Who would've thought? Bonus: Kevin Hart narrated the audiobook himself.

Unexpectedly good. (I know, sorry) Anna's stories were funny, raw and downright relatable. Will check out her podcast after this.

Maybe listening to this book while I was ACTUALLY in a hurry wasn’t a bright idea. It was rather difficult for me to comprehend chunks of the book because I was so caught up with trying to imagine how some scientific terms are spelled. (No, really! Hah!) There were some parts that stood out and made sense to me, fortunately. Hence the 3-star rating. It got me thinking — perhaps I need to give it another go but in an actual book format? Tee hee.
