Historia
Set during the Depression in the depleted farmlands surrounding Augusta, Georgia, Tobacco Road was first published in 1932. It is the story of the Lesters, a family of white sharecroppers so destitute that most of their creditors have given up on them. Debased by poverty to an elemental state of ignorance and selfishness, the Lesters are preoccupied by their hunger, sexual longings, and fear that they will one day descend to a lower rung on the social ladder than the black families who live near them.

Contrived and Unreal
Revisado: 02-06-22
The author tried at absurdity and suffering. Lack of human qualities, however, make his characters nothing more than paper dolls — lifeless, that is. It strains me to believe such 'absurdities'.

Historia
The opening sentence of John Irving's breakout novel, The World According to Garp, signals the start of sexual violence, which becomes increasingly political. "Garp's mother, Jenny Fields, was arrested in Boston in 1942 for wounding a man in a movie theater." Jenny is an unmarried nurse; she becomes a single mom and a feminist leader, beloved but polarizing. Her son, Garp, is less beloved, but no less polarizing.

Now I Know the Toad
Revisado: 01-24-22
When I was an undergrad I carried a copy around in 1978 just for show. Never read beyond the Peter Bent; not reaching the cinema part. After those years it's a pleasure to be read the full story by the excellent portrayal. It is just the book for any one. A must hear.

Best Crime-Noncrime Story of the Moment
Revisado: 10-31-21
It is also a thriller-non thriller, a mystery at its best. The story is well woven, intricate, layered, with its own rhythm. Each psychological detail is nakedly bare. The art theme is unmistakable. Follow it and every piece will fall in exact place right to the very end. Not a book for skip and skim reading. Narrators' perfomance is superb.

"If Robert Littell didn't invent the American spy novel," says Tom Clancy, "he should have." In this spectacular Cold-War-as-Alice-in-Wonderland epic, Littell, "the American le Carre," takes us down the rabbit hole and into the labyrinthine world of espionage that has been the CIA for the last half-century. "Ostensibly a single novel, The Company can also be listened to as an anthology of cracking good spy stories," says ( Publishers Weekly).

Historia
Maps have a mysterious hold over us. Whether ancient, crumbling parchments or generated by Google, maps tell us things we want to know, not only about our current location or where we are going but about the world in general. And yet, when it comes to geo-politics, much of what we are told is generated by analysts and other experts who have neglected to refer to a map of the place in question.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Depressing
Revisado: 02-25-20
I don't know how, but this is a most depressing book I've listened to. The story is enough to crush your feelings. The way the same events, points, discourse and the negative attitude keep hammering the audience. Sorry, no feel good factor, no way out, at all can you find here.

Ordinary people. Extraordinary stories. Listen to history's unsung heroes who changed the world, in this powerful documentary series. Get closer to events you may only have heard about from school books with these first person accounts of key moments in recent world history. In each episode we explore pertinent dates from 1936 to 2010 and find out what happened through the eyes of those who were there. Crossing the globe and drawing on events in London, Mexico City and Afghanistan to name but a few we hear stories including takes from an athlete, journalist, chess player and soldier.

Are shorter audios possible?
Revisado: 01-26-20
Nothing to complain. My question is if you keep extending a narrative just to fill 5, 10,15 or 30 minutes, how can even your avid fans ever listen to all on offer. Of course you will sell less. Assignments to your producers should be given with NO intention to put in 'issue fillers'. If I give you 10 minutes give reasonably dense 10 minutes. Cut it down to 5 if that is all you need. Make us feel we don't want to miss a word of your shows. Gone are the days when we were idle and wanted an always-there companionship on the radio. And oh, I can't find 'the rest was history' in the Audible store.
