Historia
Growing up, Jessie and Hillary lived for summer, when they’d be reunited at Camp Chickawah. The best friends vowed to become counselors together someday, but they drifted apart after Hillary broke her promise and only Jessie stuck to their plan, working her way up to become the camp director. When Jessie learns that the camp will be sold, she decides to plan one last hurrah, inviting past campers—including Hillary—to a nostalgic “adult summer camp” before closing for good.

Emotionally refreshing summer read
Revisado: 07-19-24
This was the second book of Ali Brady's I've read and I'm constantly impressed by the mature themes of grief, vulnerability, sexual consent and pleasure, mutual respect and individual growth that permeate the pages. It's fun to laugh, cry and feel alongside the characters and reflect on the universal themes the characters endure. Would recommend to anyone looking for a fun but thoughtful summer read!

Historia
None of us had a perfect childhood; we are all carrying around behaviors that don’t serve us—and may in fact be hurting us. But it doesn’t have to be that way, says licensed marriage and family therapist Vienna Pharaon. Our past might create our patterns, but we can change those patterns for the better...with the right tools. In The Origins of You, Pharaon has unlocked a healing process to help us understand our Family of Origin—the family and framework we grew up within—and examine what worked (and didn’t) in that system.

As a therapist, I am always looking for new ways of seeing my clients. This has completely reshaped how I help people move through their pain toward transformation. Vienna's raw vulnerability matched with her emotional discernment of the clients she works with offers a powerful new take on what it means to live life with a heart and eyes wide open.

Excellent overview for healing after an affair
Revisado: 10-20-22
I chose this book because I'm a clinician who treats couples who are recovering after an affair. It helped me understand the huge swatch of situations couples can face and the ways they can work through them. Wonderfully written and very thorough. Thank you for your masterful work on this topic.

Historia
Jimmy O. Yang is a stand-up comedian, film and TV actor and fan favorite as the character Jian Yang from the popular HBO series Silicon Valley. In How to American, he shares his story of growing up as a Chinese immigrant who pursued a Hollywood career against the wishes of his parents: Yang arrived in Los Angeles from Hong Kong at age 13, learned English by watching BET's Rap City for three hours a day, and worked as a strip club DJ while pursuing his comedy career.

Entertaining but a little tone deaf
Revisado: 03-05-22
I appreciated Jimmy's re-telling of his experience as a Chinese immigrant in the United States. I think we need more stories of Asian immigrants and the difficulties they face in a new country, especially the U.S. I was just waiting for his acknowledgment of the privileges he had, such as supportive parents and what seems like a decent socioeconomic status into which he was born. I was waiting for an acknowledgment of his luck at making it in Hollywood while innumerable people are rejected and never get to realize their dreams. His "American Dream" story feels a little too sweet, almost as if he's saying, "if I can do it, you can too. You just have to believe." Yes, he took a huge risk and it paid off. But what about all the other people out there who followed their dreams and didn't reach the same success?
Also, there was so much dehumanizing language about women. I would have thought as a Hollywood actor and someone who's been debased off his social status as an Asian in America that he would understand not to talk about others in disrespectful ways. He sounded like a 13 year old teenage boy in a locker room at certain points.
Overall, I appreciated that he shared his story. I take him to be very sincere. But as a woman, I didn't feel completely safe in his conceptualization of the female sex.

Historia
In The Righteous Mind, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt explores the origins of our divisions and points the way forward to mutual understanding. His starting point is moral intuition - the nearly instantaneous perceptions we all have about other people and the things they do. These intuitions feel like self-evident truths, making us righteously certain that those who see things differently are wrong. Haidt shows us how these intuitions differ across cultures, including the cultures of the political left and right.

Exceptional explanation for political polarization

This book is an exceptional explanation for why we see the political polarization in our country today. I feel invigorated to approach loved ones with different views and offer them the respect they deserve after reading this book. Historia
As M. E. Thomas says of her fellow sociopaths, we are your neighbors, co-workers, and quite possibly the people closest to you: lovers, family, friends. Our risk-seeking behavior and general fearlessness are thrilling, our glibness and charm alluring. Our often quick wit and outside-the-box thinking make us appear intelligent - even brilliant. We climb the corporate ladder faster than the rest, and appear to have limitless self-confidence.... Who are we? We are highly successful, non-criminal sociopaths and we comprise 4% of the American population (that's 1 in 25 people!).

Historia
We are accustomed to think of sociopaths as violent criminals, but in The Sociopath Next Door, Harvard psychologist Martha Stout reveals that a shocking 4 percent of ordinary people, one in 25, has an often undetected mental disorder, the chief symptom of which is that that person possesses no conscience. He or she has no ability whatsoever to feel shame, guilt, or remorse. One in 25 everyday Americans, therefore, is secretly a sociopath.
