Historia
Brunhild was a foreign princess, raised to be married off for the sake of alliance-building. Her sister-in-law Fredegund started out as a lowly palace slave. And yet - in sixth-century Merovingian France, where women were excluded from noble succession and royal politics was a blood sport - these two iron-willed strategists reigned over vast realms, changing the face of Europe.

I Want More
Revisado: 11-19-24
I love learning about the forgotten or hidden corners of history. It was so cool learning about these two amazing female leaders and how they impacted their time period in so many ways. as the author says, I don't know what it would've meant to learn about leaders like Brunhilde and Fredegund when I was younger but I know listening to this book makes me want to tell everyone about them. I'm so glad this book was written to give them some of the recognition that was stolen from them by the men of their times.

Historia
Studying zoology made Lucy Cooke feel like a sad freak. Not because she loved spiders or would root around in animal feces: All her friends shared the same curious kinks. The problem was her sex. Being female meant she was, by nature, a loser. Since Charles Darwin, evolutionary biologists have been convinced that the males of the animal kingdom are the interesting ones—dominating and promiscuous, while females are dull, passive, and devoted. But Cooke tells a new story.

I wish everyone could read this book

I wish everyone could read this book and have a better understanding that being female doesn't fit into one small little box.

great story
Revisado: 02-12-22
when I read the reviews for this before purchasing I saw all the comments on the narration and from previous times I sort of dismissed it as overreaction since I've seen that before on other books. I'm am sorry to those reviewers, you were right the different pronunciations is grating. I hope in the third book maybe all the narrator could be given a guide on how to pronounce the words the same way maybe? It really pulls you out of the story for a bit which is unfortunate because the story is excellent. It's been a long time since a story has made me outwardly react to plot twists! looking forward to the third installment!

Historia
Language defines us as a species, placing humans head and shoulders above even the most proficient animal communicators. But it also beguiles us with its endless mysteries, allowing us to ponder why different languages emerged, why there isn't simply a single language, how languages change over time and whether that's good or bad, and how languages die out and become extinct.

Went beyond expectations
Revisado: 03-26-21
This was such a fascinating find. I did not expect to come out with such a greater appreciation for languages, dialects and history. If you are a curious person, interested in languages or a self professed "grammar nazi" I highly recommend listening to this.
