Great plot line!
Revisado: 03-23-25
The story always kept one guessing.
What I didn’t appreciate were the unnecessary descriptions of sex scenes which certainly took the sheen off the story. Why is it that authors, probably mostly at the behest of their editors/publishers, feel it necessary to put least one, or more, of the following into their novels, when it lends absolutely nothing to the story: graphic sex scenes, a gay/lesbian character, a trans character, and continual use of the ‘F-word’? The plot line in this book is the only thing what kept me listening even after the highly objectionable parts.

Review of ‘The Bird Hotel’.
Revisado: 11-13-23
What a wonderful story of love lost, emotional trauma, emotional growth, and forgiveness. The setting, in a. Small village in Central America, was so well described that I might have been there myself. The story is narrated by the author and was sooo well done. Just terrific.

Learning to live
Revisado: 02-08-23
This is a wonderful story of a young man who, when working as a teenager, learns much from a fellow worker who is a Viet Nam vet and is his fighting the demons of PTSD. As the boy grows from boy to man he internalizes many of the things he learned from the war veteran and they inform not a few of his decisions and his way of looking at the world. Great character descriptions. His depiction of the life of young men in their late teens is ‘spot on’.

Historia
Brunelleschi's Dome is the story of how a Renaissance genius bent men, materials, and the very forces of nature to build an architectural wonder we continue to marvel at today. Denounced at first as a madman, Brunelleschi was celebrated at the end as a genius. He engineered the perfect placement of brick and stone, built ingenious hoists and cranes to carry an estimated 70 million pounds hundreds of feet into the air, and designed the workers' platforms and routines so carefully that only one man died during the decades of construction.

Architect during the Italian Renaissance
Revisado: 07-08-21
This is a terrific book that recounts the backstory behind the construction of the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence, Italy, by Fillipo Brunelleschi. The dome still remains the largest dome in the world without any flying buttresses or center support. A history of the construction and all the internal problems is well-covered.

Terrible narration!
Revisado: 07-06-21
This book had a lot of hype when it first came out. I finally out around to requesting it but am tremendously disappointed. The narrator has a grating, tinny, high-pitched lice that is so irritating to listen to. My ears are rebelling. I am giving up at about 20 percent done. ☹️☹️

Ending left story unfinished
Revisado: 02-07-20
The story developed in the first part of the book as what I thought was an allegory. The latter part seemed to veer more and more into the metaphysical. So many loose ends and story parts that didn’t seem to relate to the story. Many unanswered questions when it ended.
The narration was great. Narrator’s voice sounded exactly like Tom Hanks . . . and who of us would not like to listen to that voice?

This is the book the CIA does not want you to read. For the last 60 years, the CIA has maintained a formidable reputation in spite of its terrible record, never disclosing its blunders to the American public. It spun its own truth to the nation while reality lay buried in classified archives. Now, Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times reporter Tim Weiner offers a stunning indictment of the CIA, a deeply flawed organization that has never deserved America's confidence.

An A-1 Assessment
Revisado: 01-31-20
First, I was amazed at the amount of research that went into this book. The results of that research are saddening but give the common citizen a ‘mouse in the corner’ view of what the challenges and failures of the CIA had been since its inception in the 1940’s. Some of those failures were absolutely colossal: failures to gather enough intelligence and, most important, to analyze that intelligence properly, in the mis-guided conclusion that Iran had WMD’s; that terrorists could, and did wreak havoc on our own soil on 9-11; ad nauseum. Head-shaking examples of the myriad problems that existed for so long are depressing but serve as a call to the nation for enlightened oversight and analysis on an ongoing basis of not only the CIA, but of any governmental agency, to ensure that the founding principles of the agency continue to be served in the best way possible. A terrific read and a very eye-opening analysis of this one governmental department.

Historia
Although Thomas Alva Edison was the most famous American of his time, and remains an international name today, he is mostly remembered only for the gift of universal electric light. His invention of the first practical incandescent lamp 140 years ago so dazzled the world - already reeling from his invention of the phonograph and dozens of other revolutionary devices - that it cast a shadow over his later achievements. In all, this near-deaf genius patented 1,093 inventions, not including others, such as the X-ray fluoroscope, that he left unlicensed for the benefit of medicine.

Great Bio
Revisado: 01-23-20
This was a terrific bio, not done in the usual chronological order, but done in topic order. I’m always leery of memoirs and autobiographies because the author can shine his/her own halo and never mention experiences that would cast him in a bad light. This bio is very interesting, not a hagiography at all. Edison is shown as both brilliant and ever so human, all at once. The narration was top drawer. Loved the insight into the relationship between Edison, @his children, and both of his wives.

Historia
Sir John Penlyon is planning to spend Christmas at his estate with his niece and his friend Danby, the closest thing he has to family since disowning his daughter years ago. (She eloped with the parson, who was, of course, penniless.) Danby suggests that at Christmastime the estate needs the presence of small children, and offers to find some - the “hirelings” - despite Sir John’s skepticism. Three children duly arrive, and the youngest, precocious four year-old Moppet, quickly endears herself to Sir John.
