Not what it professes to be
Revisado: 12-07-22
This is one of those books that isn't upfront about the fact that it is Christian Lit until you are 9 chapters in. I always feel duped when that happens and mad I wasted a credit on it. If you like religious references in your science fiction, then you might like this book. The premise is interesting.

Historia
Meredith and Nina Whitson are as different as sisters can be. One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard; the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. But when their beloved father falls ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters.

Only the second of hers I've read. Loved The Nightingale so I was hopeful. Just found myself not really caring about the characters which might have been the narration. I would listen to the sample first.

Historia
Being on the murder squad is nothing like Detective Antoinette Conway dreamed it would be. Her partner, Stephen Moran, is the only person who seems glad she's there. The rest of her working life is a stream of thankless cases, vicious pranks, and harassment. Antoinette is savagely tough, but she's getting close to the breaking point. Their new case looks like yet another by-the-numbers lovers' quarrel gone bad. Aislinn Murray is blond, pretty, groomed to a shine, and dead in her catalogue-perfect living room, next to a table set for a romantic dinner.

First person is wrong choice
Revisado: 01-31-20
The main character in this book is completely unlikable. She is a detective on a murder squad who disparages every civilian she comes in contact with and uses people with no consideration of their vulnerability or pain. Maybe, she's covering something up by showing no regard for her fellow human beings, but it's hard to know because author chose to write in first person. Because of that, all we experience is her negativity and callousness without insight. Hearing it in audio is especially difficult because you feel like you are having a relationship with a highly toxic person.

too much magic
Revisado: 12-29-17
Making it to chapter 42, I tried really hard to like this book. For me there it's too much focus on the world and not enough on plot and character development. The magic surrounding and wielded by the main characters is extensive and rather than adding to the story distracts from it.. Since every character from the previous books now have godlike powers, I would have liked to seen the introduction of some normal people to get the viewpoint of how all this magic is affecting them. I thought that what made the first books so good was how the main characters discovered who they were. In this book they have all become less human and their powers are over the top.

graphic manipulation
Revisado: 01-31-16
What did you like best about Pretty Girls? What did you like least?
The narration was excellent. Kathleen Early delivered the extreme emotion and pain the author was going for.
Unfortunately, I felt that Slaughter's repetitive use of specific details in describing the brutal torture of young women was manipulative and unnecessary. Maybe we needed the full blown descriptions once or twice to get personally engaged in the hunt of the antagonist, but we didn't need the long drawn out graphic details almost every time someone looked at the smut films that were being made of the slow, three day long murders of young kidnapped women.
I did, however, enjoy the relationships between the sisters at the center of of the story and wanted to see the story to the end to see the horrid bad guys caught. The problem was, the graphic descriptions were so frequent I started feeling like the author was turning the reader into one of the sickos who were buying these films.
Solution: Fast forward. Once you understand the crime, it's easy to anticipate the descriptions and forward through them. I wish I had figured this out earlier.

Narration + Writing = Brilliance
Revisado: 07-31-11
Every once in awhile there comes along a perfect marriage between an author and a narrator. I did not think I ever would find one better than the pairing in the Harry Potter series, but believe me, Steven Pacey's interpretation of Joe Abercrombie's writing surpasses anything I have ever heard.
Don't let the reviews about the negative characterizations discourage you. Yes, these characters are flawed, but you find yourselves rooting for them to become better people as you understand how their pasts and the interference of evil has effected their lives. Abercrombie's technique of juxtaposing the characters' actions with their inner thoughts allows you to get to know them on a deeper level than is often possible in fantasy novels. I found myelf both horrified and laughing out loud.
I can't rave enough about Steven Pacey's narration. It was perfect. The timing, the subtle distinctions between the characters' inner voices and their outer conversations, the accents that fit the locales...the humor...perfect. I especially appreciate his interpretation of the female voices. He doesn't try to "sound" like a woman, but gives them the same depth that he gives the men. I will search for more books read by him, and Joe Abercrombie should be sending him chocolate and flowers.

Historia
In the 25th century, humankind has spread throughout the galaxy, monitored by the watchful eye of the U.N. While divisions in race, religion, and class still exist, advances in technology have redefined life itself. Now, assuming one can afford the expensive procedure, a person's consciousness can be stored in a cortical stack at the base of the brain and easily downloaded into a new body (or "sleeve") making death nothing more than a minor blip on a screen.

I quit
Revisado: 02-10-10
Don't mind the sex, don't mind the language, but after a couple of hours I expect to be able to be cheering or booing for something. Narration is flat, but what I really didn't like was that I didn't care about the characters. The vision and creative imagination of the author are cool for awhile but lost it's appeal without characters to care about.

Historia
On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

King has earned it
Revisado: 02-10-10
Great narration, thank goodness because there are a lot of characters to distinguish between. Not nearly as good as The Stand or Gunslinger Series, but unlike those complaining about the political aspect of this book, I believe Stephen King has earned the right to express his art with political bias. Art is suppose to reflect our society, and using his genre to comment on the Bush years is not just OK, but commendable. The length is a little much, and the plot somewhat predictable, but thoroughly enjoyable if you are doing something else while listening.

Best series yet
Revisado: 09-15-09
Listened to all four and best I've heard. Jim Butcher did a great job developing characters and creating a world you can get lost in. Kate Reading is almost as good as the person who reads Harry Potter and through her voice enhances Butcher's characters. I tried Butcher's Dresden series but couldn't handle the Reader (he sniffs too much) so I will read that series because I trust Butcher not to disappoint. Unlike so many series, Codex Alera doesn't get tedious or gimmicky after the third book; it just gets better.
