Historia
Shocking and controversial when it was first published in 1939, Steinbeck's Pulitzer prize-winning epic The Grapes of Wrath remains his undisputed masterpiece. Set against the background of Dust Bowl Oklahoma and Californian migrant life, it tells of Tom Joad and his family, who, like thousands of others, are forced to travel west in search of the promised land. Their story is one of false hopes, thwarted desires, and broken dreams, yet out of their suffering Steinbeck created a drama that is intensely human, yet majestic in its scale and moral vision.

Best Audiobook I’ve Ever Heard
Revisado: 05-11-23
This is the best audiobook I’ve ever heard and with the performance of the reader I’m certain it was a better listen than a better read. I think the story is so good it may have changed me for the better.

Historia
You are a mind reader, born with an extraordinary ability to understand what others think, feel, believe, want, and know. It's a sixth sense you use every day, in every personal and professional relationship you have. At its best, this ability allows you to achieve the most important goal in almost any life: connecting, deeply and intimately and honestly, to other human beings. At its worst, it is a source of misunderstanding and unnecessary conflict, leading to damaged relationships and broken dreams. How good are you at knowing the minds of others?

For me, this book calls into question many things about understanding others and the message they are conveying and what they are really thinking. I enjoyed it.

Historia
The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works. Told in language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal, a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss.

This may be the best short read I’ve ever read.
Revisado: 10-10-22
The old man and the sea comes to the point with its first words. I was awestruck at how I could learn of friendship, love of mankind and the job at hand while being led through the cycle of life without knowing it until the end when I should know it. It may be the most efficient use of words I have ever consumed.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Why it’s difficult to understand strangers, with examples
Revisado: 05-09-21
Talking to Strangers sheds light on why we are bad at understanding one another when we think we are good at it. Many times my demeanor doesn’t show my true attitude. I take note of the responses and the strangers are often wrong. This book will, perhaps, give you insight as to why people are so often misunderstood and become victims. Clear examples and research light the way.

Captain John Whidden was an American merchant sailor who sailed all over the world. He wrote this work in 1908, partly as a memoir, but also to offer a snippet of the “old sailing ship days” before major changes occurred. It is a story of a boy from New England and his various roles on ships from the age of 12 to 37. He documents the changes in the shipping industry over the 19th and into the 20th century.

Enlightening
Revisado: 03-26-21
I was able to travel the world from my headphones. I learned much about ships, sailing and ports of call around the world. I enjoyed learning of the Captain’s life from boy to Captain and learned many terms as I looked them up. I expected repetition but was pleasantly surprised by the lack thereof. Easy, enjoyable and informative for me.

Historia
Challenging both the idea of the addict's "broken brain" and the notion of a simple "addictive personality", Unbroken Brain offers a radical and groundbreaking new perspective, arguing that addiction is a learning disorder, and shows how seeing the condition this way can untangle our current debates over treatment, prevention, and policy.

Revolutionary
Revisado: 08-12-19
The book purports, among other things, that addiction is a learning disorder. Further, if the premise is correct then the assumption that jail time never cured an addict is correct. Addicts need love, support and medical attention just like any other medical problem. You cannot punish an addict back to health.
