Historia
In 1985, Anthony Ray Hinton was arrested and charged with two counts of capital murder in Alabama. Stunned, confused, and only 29 years old, Hinton knew that it was a case of mistaken identity and believed that the truth would prove his innocence and ultimately set him free. But with an incompetent defense attorney and a different system of justice for a poor black man in the South, Hinton was sentenced to death by electrocution. He spent his first three years on Death Row at Holman State Prison in despairing silence.

A world I didn’t understand until now
Revisado: 01-20-24
This story is amazing. My words don’t do this story justice. Racism is so ugly. I listen to the beautiful heart and faith that Mr. Hinton has and wonder how people can be so evil to such a wonderful person. This story isn’t new to our black community but it still stings. This is a must read.

Historia
No one expects the police to knock on the door of the million-dollar two-story home of the perfect cul-de-sac housewife. But soccer mom Lara Love Hardin has been hiding a shady secret: she is funding her heroin addiction by stealing her neighbors’ credit cards. Lara is convicted of thirty-two felonies and becomes inmate S32179. She finds that jail is a class system with a power structure that is somewhere between an adolescent sleepover party and Lord of the Flies. But Lara quickly learns the rules and brings love and healing to her fellow inmates.

Captivating from start to the end

I really enjoyed this book. The true path from childhood to adulthood. The mistakes, lessons, love, hurt, acceptance and more will keep you on your toes. Very interesting for everyone. I saw myself in many of Laura’s life experiences. I’ve even learned how to accept myself as I am. This book also provides food for thought when you consider friendship and the conditions that may come with them. I highly recommend this book.

Historia
Carmen Rita Wong has always craved a sense of belonging: First as a toddler in a warm room full of Black and brown Latina women, like her mother, Lupe, cheering her dancing during her childhood in Harlem. And in Chinatown, where her immigrant father, “Papi” Wong, a hustler, would show her and her older brother off in opulent restaurants decorated in red and gold. Then came the almost exclusively white playgrounds of New Hampshire after her mother married her stepfather, Marty, who seemed to be the ideal of the white American dad.

Thank you Carmen for sharing your life on paper. I wish you a beautiful future with your new found family. I’m sure Alex helped with your discovery while looking over you from heaven.

Interesting and funny

I enjoyed this family’s activities. It was very close to reality in ways. The various personalities of each child and the take charge attitude of the Mom kept me engaged. The ending kept me captive until the last word.

Historia
There was no reason to bet on Bruce Johnson, given where he started out. Poor, Black, and raised by a single mother who had a secret. He was the child she hid in plain view from the rest of her family. As an adult, he set out to just make a living - to do better than Black folks who tried their best before, while making his Momma and Grandmomma proud. His journey to becoming a successful TV journalist nearly killed him, but he refused to treat himself as a victim. His role was to use his voice and example to pull others out of deep waters.

I couldn’t stop listening to Bruce. I read a lot of biographies. This is one bio that you will finish and know more about the author than you started. Bruce’s stories are so interesting and incredible. I am from the DMV and am amazed to be able to reflect on various events the Bruce covered. The chapter on “crack” took me back to living and working in DC during that time. I wished this book wouldn’t end. I need more Bruce, write another book please.
