The history of war is replete with examples of men who distinguished themselves in battle only to disgrace themselves after being promoted to commands above their capabilities. During the American Civil War, that man was John Bell Hood. Hood was one of the most tenacious generals in the Confederacy, for better and worse.

More of an overview of the Civil War than a Bio

I thought I was purchasing a bio on John Bell Hood, it's not, just a more general overview of the Civil War. There are a few direct mentions of JBH but 95% of it is just Civil War history. I found it to be "reckless" to use that title!

The conflict lasted less than two years, but the repercussions shook both nations for much longer. Having already lost Texas, the still newly independent Mexico was unprepared to defend their northern territories. The US plowed forward through to California with a sense of manifest destiny. While the US fought to gain more land, however, the war splintered the North and South; many Americans saw the war as an unjust theft of Mexican land and knew that the South’s reliance on slave labor would further establish this divisive injustice in America.

Learn the pronunciation of names!

This narrator needs to learn the proper pronunciation of names of well known generals before reading the story. It"s Fremont not Fraymont and Kearny, pronounced Car-nee not Kern-ee. This oversight was problematic and annoying because of.the lack of knowledge and research by this narrator.
