I’m not a huge fan of novels with large amounts of characters, especially POV characters. Here, we have close to 14 POV characters and it can get a bit much going from character to character and not seeing other characters for long periods of time. On top of this not really being a plot heavy book, this is definitely more of a book about learning about the distinct personalities of the council. Miller does all of the character work well and tie it in, but I wished it was much more focused between less characters. Every character does get a moment, which I do appreciate, but some definitely get more than others. What he did was good, but he definitely had wayyyy too many characters to juggle.

In terms of narrative, it definitely felt like a prequel book with a bit of an epilogue to the High Republic era. The indictment of the Jedi in this and especially the council, made it very much at home with the prequel era. The addition of Qui-Gon really helped here and definitely helped set up the indictment of the council I referred to and really made a strong point.

Overall, I enjoyed it but the juggling of characters was a bit jarring. I am a prequel fan, so I’m a bit biased, but I do think that this is at least a worthy novel to check out and Marc Thompson always does great narration.

I started going through Kurosawa’s films a few months ago and am still going through them as of the writing of this review and I have watched all of the films covered. Let me just say that this was fascinating to hear it straight from the horse’s mouth about what molded him into one of the finest directors ever in the history of cinema. My only real complaint is that he wouldn’t oblige us with his analysis of some of his more popular films like Ikiru and Seven Samurai. My theory is that he doesn’t want to talk at length about Toshiro Mifune. As he’s only touched on when desperately needed. If you’re looking to learn about the production of those films and films made post-Rashomon, you’ll be as disappointed as I was. That being said, this was a beautifully crafted biography exploring the man behind the camera and learning about his earlier works makes me want to rewatch those films in a new context.

Outbound Flight is one of those books where it’s soaked in lore from other novels. Some I haven’t read yet, so I will have to revisit it when I have read those novels. My main issue is that the main preface of the book doesn’t even happen until halfway through. With a book about an expedition, you’d expect it to be about the expedition… but it isn’t. You have several plots that just happen to converge for no reason. I love Thrawn, but he didn’t have to take up a large amount of page space. I get that Zahn wanted to give us the Thrawn origin story, but this is not the book to do it in. He did a way better job in his canon Thrawn books. There are 2 other characters that barely serve any reason to be in here, but since they’re not on the cover like Thrawn… I won’t divulge more than that. As well as these plotlines get set up, just to get resolved with not much time to live in the plotlines. As soon as you think you’re getting a grasp on everything, the end of the book is approaching. Safe to say, I didn’t enjoy a lot about this book. There are moments, and I think the characterization is very good. Unfortunately, that doesn’t save a very uneven book.

This has one of my favorite space battles I’ve read in a book, and I’m not a huge fan of space battles in books. I’m not that visual, but I could see this one so vividly in my head. The main highlights much like Alliances fell into the character moments. Thrawn interacting with all of these other high ranking imperials was fascinating to read about and fleshes out this time period even more. This also addresses the problem with writing a character like Thrawn as your protagonist, as his character archetype can’t really hold up a book because of his unrelatability. And there’s nobody to really fill that role either. The conflict of the empire or the chiss and where his loyalties lie is probably the most compelling on a narrative front. Besides that, this just gives us more time with Thrawn. Which is good, but coming off how great the 1st one was and Vader crashing into the narrative in the 2nd book… it comes off a bit redundant and unnecessary. By far the most forgettable in this canon Thrawn Trilogy.

This is probably the best character centric SW novel I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to. The way Zahn gets you into Thrawn’s head and how his mind works is absolutely fantastic. I also loved the political intrigue and made me even feel tension on things I know is going to happen due to preexisting media. I also loved how Zahn managed to still give Thrawn the protagonist label while also keeping us in mind that he is a bad guy. With that as well, Zahn makes you care for Thrawn and root do him due to Xenophobia and the other hiccups that prevent him from rising the ranks even faster. My only complaint is that I can’t really visualize space combat and sometimes I tune out during the long monologues. As well as Marc Thompson with that A+ Lars Mikkelson impression gives you a whole other level of immersion. Can’t recommend this enough get it

I was very iffy about reading this as I was trying to catch up for phase 3, but this is totally worth it. It’s a great way to bridge the gaps between phases 1&2 through the characters and the fact that it’s in chronological order. Some of these stories are better than whole books we’ve gotten from HR. The standouts are the ones by Charles Soule, George Mann, Cavan Scott and Justina Ireland. Those are the reason you should listen to this book. It’s not top tier audio production, but the story makes the production bearable. Would recommend for anyone reading HR.

The Best YA High Republic Novel So Far!!

All of the context provided to Phase 1 alone is worth the read, but the fact that it tells a great story and opens up so many doors that Phase 2 can go through really makes me excited going forward. The standout was obviously Marda Ro, she’s probably one of my favorite book characters in SW and her fanaticism is written so well within the confines of SW. Cults are also a very interesting topic to explore in a YA book, but Ireland and Gratton get just dark enough to fit the tone but not too dark that it doesn’t seem like SW. Its a very challenging thing to do and they executed it flawlessly. One of the only YA books I’d actually recommend to a non completionist!!

This book suffers from a boring plot and a lot of characters that I could care less about. There are some notable standouts, like I did really like the Jedi in this book and I loved Kantum’s arc. Being the whole be yourself, not what people want you to be is a great theme for a YA book. Without anything interesting to actually root them for in doing, it still fell flat. Unlike a lot of the reviews I saw for this book, I really don’t mind the sexuality in the book per sey but I’m not a huge fan of sexuality and swearing in SW in general. It does serve the narrative but still. It was incredibly mediocre all the way around with the characters really pushing me through the book. Especially with the 1st appearance of Yoda in the series. Def not worth your time unless you want to read all the novels. 3/10

You thought the end of Rising Storm was bad… take the whole book. That’s how sad you’ll be. This I’d definitely the climactic finale of Phase 1 and you can feel it. All of the main characters from the books are here and are at their most vulnerable. Gray excels at characterization, always has. Not like in this book though. She made characters I already loved from the other books even better. To the point where some of them die, it’s truly heartbreaking and I was really bummed. Marc Thompson’s narration is unmatched here, he’s gives that extra push that really enhances the story and makes it go from pretty good to great. I also loved hearing his McConahuey, very nice touch as Gray actually fan casts her characters. I have 2 problems though. 1. Focusing on the plot here I think inadvertently undermines the great disaster, largely because it’s 1/3 of Light Of The Jedi and this is a whole book about this one thing. 2. I could’ve done without some characters even though I really like the characters. Unfortunately, they really had no need to be in the book.

Everything You Could Expect From A High Republic Audio Drama

Cavan Scott nails it on his 2nd time through with another villain origin story audio drama. Lourna Dee is by far one of the most fascinating Nihil and to see her story was insightful and heartbreaking all at the same time. The Way Cavan Scott portrays this as a cautionary tale is marvelous throughout the different themes established and payed off towards the end. The production is fantastic on this and the cast did a fantastic job, Jessica Almasy and Marc Thompson being the highlights. By far the best audio drama even though you can see where it goes, and it adds to the brilliance of the writing.
