Just fine
Revisado: 04-13-24
This was fine. I don’t regret the time I spent with the characters, but the author might want to listen to teens talk more. I have never heard a person under 70 say “ought” instead of “should”. Or “you’re pulling my leg!” But the story was sweet, if a bit confusing and disjointed. No regrets listening to it, but not incredible either.

Historia
Abandoned as an infant on the local veterinarian’s front porch, Pepper Rafferty was raised by two loving mothers, and now, at thirty-six is married to the stable, supportive Ike. She’s never told anyone that at fifteen she discovered the identity of her biological mother. That’s because her birth mother is Ula Frost, a reclusive painter famous for the outrageous claims that her portraits summon their subjects’ doppelgängers from parallel universes.

Not great
Revisado: 09-24-23
The reading of this story was good, but the story itself disappointing. If I took a drink every time the book said “another universe in which” I would be dead. Motivations of characters were unclear, and our main character, Pepper, seemed unrealistically thick. The overall concept of this story is very creative - paintings that bring people closer to other universes - but the execution was underwhelming.

Confusing
Revisado: 07-05-22
This book has all the elements of a good story - epic scenery, myths reimagined, interesting characters - but the writing is so convoluted and confusing it’s impossible to keep track of what’s happening. Where was the editor on this?? Multiple times someone moves silently while making noise, or carries something in two hands then somehow uses a compass that would mean they had three hands?? The battles are impossible to keep track of. Essential parts of the characters are contradicted constantly. One character sole purpose kills jinn to avenge her murdered family. However, she also says many times she does not concern herself with the past. Hmmmm.
The performances are also not the best. One of the readers sounds like he has a cold and breathes distractingly loudly. One sometimes sounds like a voice coming out of my computer from 2005. Again, where is the editor? The producer? Give the author and readers direction, please!
I love the myths in this story, so I hope someone else writes with this subject matter. This is one to skip.
