Historia
Virginia, 1864—Libby Steadman’s husband has been away for so long that she can barely conjure his voice in her dreams. While she longs for him in the night, fearing him dead in a Union prison camp, her days are spent running a gristmill with her teenage niece, a hired hand, and his wife, all the grain they can produce requisitioned by the Confederate Army. It’s an uneasy life in the Shenandoah Valley, the territory frequently changing hands, control swinging back and forth like a pendulum between North and South, and Libby awakens every morning expecting to see her land a battlefield.

Bohjalian is a master storyteller with a fluent voice. The protagonist, Libby Steadman, is an unforgettable character. The historical issues are relevant today and no less important. Penning's lively narration enhances.

Please find another narrator
Revisado: 06-04-24
After enjoying the first two volumes of this series and looking forward to number three, I was astonished that this narration could survive quality control. It is possibly the worst narration of any audiobook I've ever bought. Some of the voices Mr. Newman summonses make me laugh out loud, and you can be sure that was not intended. I'm still a fan of the story, so I'll probably go for volume four, but I will think twice about it.

Fine narration, intriguing concept
Revisado: 05-28-24
This espionage novel is few others in the mainstream. The narrator's voice is compelling, so you slog on, even though the plot/story is (Purposefully?) bland, making the point that espionage is not quite what Bond or Ludlum portray. A bit like Le Carre, but not as dense.

CEOs, celebrities, and leaders of small countries all vied for his time and cash after he catapulted, practically overnight, onto the Forbes billionaire list. Who was this rumpled guy in cargo shorts and limp white socks, whose eyes twitched across Zoom meetings as he played video games on the side?

Unanswered questions
Revisado: 11-05-23
Although detailed about the early years, this story is short on answers to the ultimate questions and leaves much to be desired. Still, it raises a a few troubling questions about how things unfolded. Unfortunately, no answers. In the end, the reader knows little more than headline info.

Historia
After being rescued as infants from a sinking ocean liner in 1914, Marian and Jamie Graves are raised by their dissolute uncle in Missoula, Montana. There—after encountering a pair of barnstorming pilots passing through town in beat-up biplanes—Marian commences her lifelong love affair with flight. At fourteen she drops out of school and finds an unexpected and dangerous patron in a wealthy bootlegger who provides a plane and subsidizes her lessons, an arrangement that will haunt her for the rest of her life, even as it allows her to fulfill her destiny: circumnavigating the globe.

Problematic By Design
Revisado: 10-20-22
Of course, the story and the characters have some problems. Don't expect an uplifting narrative about "soaring" happiness. Speaking of that word, it is appears in almost all of the professional reviews. What a cliche! Great Circle is a memorable story well told. Wonderful descriptive prose, especially of the sea and the ice. It's a long, satisfying read (or listen). As for the Audible version, the narration is superb. In the end, I can't feel warmly for Marian. She is self-centered, unloving, wooden, and depressed, leaving a trail of detritus wherever she goes. But we know she's wounded and to be forgiven. It's notable that Ms. Shipstead has put together such a character who, despite her shortcomings, is still quite likable in her isolation. I liked Hadley more, however, even though she has the lesser role. There's pervasive emphasis on gender transformation or confusion, which seems gratuitous and stiff.

Historia
Los Angeles in the 1960s: riots in Watts and on the Sunset Strip, wild weekends in Malibu, late nights at The Daisy discotheque, openings at the Ferus Gallery, and the convergence of pop art, rock and roll, and the New Hollywood. At the center of it all, one inspired, improbable, and highly combustible couple—Dennis Hopper and Brooke Hayward—lived out the emblematic love story of ’60s L.A.

Wonderful!
Revisado: 06-07-22
Mr. Rozzo deserves high praise for this gem. While Everybody stands alone as a superb biography, it is much more. It is a deep and wide chronicle of the lives of a family surrounded by greatness, with Dennis yearning to be great himself and Brooke longing to flourish. Both nearly drown in a sea of notoriety and excess but remarkably survive. Rosso’s empathetic lens is unblinking but compassionate. Likewise, Jason Culp’s narration is in tune and unpretentious.
It's lovely that Rozzo tells the astounding story of Dennis Hopper and Brooke Heyward so well. Hopper was a lightning rod of his generation, on par with Kesey, Stone, Warhol, Ginsberg, and Mailer. But unfortunately, self-destructive excesses, madness, and addiction made it difficult to appreciate him. It's a great story well worth the telling.

Historia
When a young man is found gruesomely murdered in a London houseboat, it triggers questions about three women who knew him. Laura is the troubled one-night-stand last seen in the victim’s home. Carla is his grief-stricken aunt, already mourning the recent death of yet another family member. And Miriam is the nosy neighbor clearly keeping secrets from the police. Three women with separate connections to the victim. Three women who are – for different reasons – simmering with resentment. Who are, whether they know it or not, burning to right the wrongs done to them.
