Historia
War and Peace is one of the greatest monuments in world literature. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars, it examines the relationship between the individual and the relentless march of history. Here are the universal themes of love and hate, ambition and despair, youth and age, expressed with a swirling vitality which makes the book as accessible today as it was when it was first published in 1869.

Historia
This Audible Exclusive production revisits Charles Dickens’ tragi-comic novel Little Dorrit. Written during the Crimean War, it a story of fortunes won and lost and a masterly portrayal of the failings of Victorian Society, with the ever-present spectre of law enforcement and imprisonment looming over a fearful population. Divided into two parts, Book One: Poverty and Book Two: Riches, Little Dorrit satirises the debtors prisons and the detrimental effect of enforcing a British class system.

I Wish It Were Longer
Revisado: 03-03-24
I’ve read more than 20 Trollope novels and this is one of my favorites. Like the best of them, it’s very meta— the author is constantly stopping the story to give us his thoughts on various aspects of his narrative or his characters or other matters, at one point creating a long compare-and-contrast with one of Dickens’ characters. Also as usual, it’s full of love stories and full of humor. I loved it. (Don’t be fooled by the first few chapters which give the impression it’s going to be a novel about office work.) The narration is perfection.

Historia
In this exuberant retelling of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Lydia Bennet puts pen to paper to relate the real events and aftermath of the classic story. Some facts are well known: Mrs. Bennet suffers from her nerves, Mr. Bennet suffers from Mrs. Bennet, and all five daughters suffer from an estate that is entailed only to male heirs. But Lydia also suffers from entirely different concerns: her best-loved sister Kitty is really a barn cat; Wickham is every bit as wicked as the world believes him to be, but what else would one expect from a demon?

Historia
Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

It’s hard to imagine a better narration of a book. Middlemarch is very long and that might put you off. But this version is so beautifully read, and the book itself is so absorbing, that you’ll wish it were longer.

Historia
Most people think of themselves as “good", but it’s not always easy to determine what’s “good” or “bad” - especially in a world filled with complicated choices and pitfalls and booby traps and bad advice. Fortunately, many smart philosophers have been pondering this conundrum for millennia, and they have guidance for us. With bright wit and deep insight, How to Be Perfect explains concepts like deontology, utilitarianism, existentialism, ubuntu, and more, so we can sound cool at parties and become better people.

Humility
Revisado: 12-28-21
For anyone who thinks this book is just going to be a way to burnish Will Smith's image, it will be a big surprise. He admits to every fear, every mistake, every humiliation. Great stories of course about his career, but this book is a portrait of a man trying to learn, over and over again, how to be kind and how to live a meaningful life.

Revisado: 08-18-21
This book is enthralling down to the last second. Just as I thought it was winding down, it was winding up. Cheating at cards is not a subject I'm intrinsically interested in, but it doesn't matter. The book is about so much more than that, but if it were only about that I would still recommend it. Superb storytelling on every level.

A terrific mixture of fact and fiction. A true ripping good yarn filled with unforgettable characters and breathtaking adventure. Whatever the audio book version is of impossible to put down. Beautifully narrated, including the juggling of multiple accents. I haven't felt this absorbed and excited listening to a book since I listened long ago to The Count of Monte Cristo.

Mispronounced Names
Revisado: 04-19-21
This is a great book and beautifully narrated. But whose job is it to find out how everyone's name should be pronounced? Where is the producer? Obviously many if not most of the people who will listen to this book will know the names of the many people Mike Nichols worked with, and it's extremely annoying and distracting to hear those names pronounced wrong. This is a problem with many audio books and the narrators shouldn't put up with it. Someone has to research names like Pakula and Balaban and tell the narrator how to pronounce them. Mike Nichols would have been furious at this lack of perfectionism.
